Find Me A Small Laptop

£500?

just wanna make sure it runs fm and I'll be happy

Hmm, you'll have a tough time getting a 13" capable of playing FM09 for £500 mate.

If you're willing to spend the extra few bob I'd highly recommend the Dell XPS M1330. Best laptop I've ever had and it'll easily run FM09. It's very light as well.

XPS M1330

If not, the Dell Inspiron 13" ain't a bad option, it's £200 quid cheaper than the XPS. It won't give you the same performance, battery life or durability but if you just want it for FM then it's probably perfect for you.

Inspiron 13"

Not sure about others, in my opinion most companies just don't make 13" Windows laptops as good as Dell do, I guess you could go for this Acer here, but check reviews before you do.

Can one of you eggheads recommend me a laptop/netbook. I'm not going to pay more than 3 ton-ish. Basically, my criteria is for it to play movies, I would like it for long flights. A good battery life would also be more than welcome. In fact I'd say it's a must.

I have the same and can highly recommend it

I am also looking for a good laptop, it wouldn't matter that much about price although i would appreciate it if it were less than £600...

Just check my above post. XPS sounds perfect for you. I've the 13" M1330 with a 6 cell battery and I can get up to 6-7 hours on the battery, depending on the screen brightness I use. If you pay an extra £50 for a 9 cell battery (makes it heaver and it sticks out at the back) I've heard you can get 7, 8, even 9 hours at a time.

Basically, the XPS is fecking mint, and I recommend if you get one (especially if it's for watching movies) that you splash the extra £100 and get the 330mh backlit screen, because it kicks the shit out of the screen on every other laptop out there.

Again, depends on 2 things, price (which you've given) and size(13", 15", 17"). First laptop I got was a 17" Inspiron about 4 years ago and I highly regretted it, those things are about as portable as a fecking fridge.

he said he doesnt want to pay more than 300quid - where the hell can you get an XPS for that price?
For anyone willing to spend around £600 then a Dell XPS is the best option

'ton' doesn't transcend in to 'quid' in Ireland!

In that case, just get an Inspiron Mini, it'll do the job.

Cheers, Cina.

why dont you buy a portable dvd player?

Well, they've got smaller screens and you'd have to carry DVDs around with you.

That said, it's a bit pricey for what I want. I doubt I'll use it for other than movies.

That's fair enough then. The Inspiron 13" ain't bad either (£200 cheaper too). But if you genuinely just want something for watching films on a plane or train or whatever, the Inspiron Mini is probably the way to go. Unfortunately it doesn't have the battery life of the others.

Main reason I've been pumping on the 13" laptops is because they're the best for battery life, netbooks/minis can't take big enough batteries and 15"/17" laptops just eat the shit out of battery life. Unfortunately the price of laptops also pays a huge part.

15" is Fine, 17" would be great

One of the guys has this HP and it works great for him. Great value for what you pay (Even has a Blu-Ray player!)

Otherwise, the new Dell Studio line are really good 17" inch, cheaper than the XPS range but they retain a lot of their best qualities and they are miles better than Inspirons.

Take your pick really, there are a hell of a lot more 17" laptops than 13" laptops out there because they're actually way cheaper to make. I recommend you avoid Sony though, whilst they're certainly the best for TVs, Sound systems and the like, they're really not that great for laptops, and they charge shitloads more than anyone else.

That looks a great laptop for such a cheap price, that should do it for me. :D

It is even cheaper in Dixons and Amazon, btw did you friend have any troubles at all, becuase it seems to be too cheap for my liking...

13.3" widescreen - Sony Vaio SZ Series is my baby and simply amazing

Got that for my mum, is a gem of a machine - was going to suggest it in this thread, but it doesn't have a CD/DVD drive so how do you watch movies/play games on it?

Cina, you seem to know your stuff.

I'm looking at getting a 15" laptop for between £400-£500. Would like it to have a good screen quality, and be able to play the occasional game i.e COD4, Fm, nothing hardcore. Just really want it to play dvds, search the internet etc.

Looking at this http://www.ebuyer.com/product/147951

or possibly a 2gb version of the exact same laptop, and then putting in a 2nd 2gb card.

Any laptops you can recommend, that are that screen size and in that price bracket?

Hmm, you'll be hard pushed to get a 15" that game play games for that price mate. If you're willing to take the plunge to the 17" range I'd go for that HP I linked to earlier.

If not, your best bet is probably a Studio 15. They all come with a graphics card capable of playing recent enough games and you'll probably be able to get one for under £500 if you don't mind leaving certain things out.

EDIT: By the way, that Samsung one only has integrated graphics, therefore I'd completely avoid it if you actually want to play games. You really need a seperate video card (nVidia or ATi) to play games properly.

Cheers Cina, thats made me question buying the Samsung, and made me think about how much i will actually play games.
