Find me a new TV...

.....50" Plasma (unless you know that LCD are better)....will be used mainly as a TV but also for playing on the Wii.

Not looking to spend a shedload on it for the sake of it so not over £2000 and preferably well under.

Ta.

I have the Sony Bravia X series 46inch LCD (Sony KDL-46X2000)

http://www.sony.co.uk/product/t46-x-series/kdl-46x2000

I bought it just when it came out 2 years ago for 4000 GBP and it has now come down to about 2000 gbp.

The Sony KDL-46X2000 is a stylish 46-inch LCD television with excellent image quality that can handle and display full 1080p high-definition signals.

I think its the best on the market, even the new stuff sony has bought out. It has fantastic functionality but its differentiating factor is its design and style. I don't think anyone has launched anything as beautiful looking at this model since!

I use it for watching TV and watching United is a pleasure on this. I also use it for work purposes and look at photo's and use my PC on it. I do some photography and this TV is fantastic because its so unforgiving on photo's. Basically, if it looks good my my 46 inch Sony, then I have nailed a great shot.

Highly recommend this tv, its really has enhanced my viewing pleasure.

Let me know if you want more info

Sony got usurped in the panel game a long time ago. Lots of clouding issues with their panels and they really do cost a bomb for what you get, which was at least justified back in the Trinitron days, when they were a league above, but not anymore.

Dont agree. Have had Sony for the past 20 years. Thay have consistenly led in new tech and design.

And a Sony is a Sony, its a great brand.

Seriously, thry out the 46 inch x series. I have had zero problems with it and have used in in London, Banagkok and Singapore which is where I have lived over the past 2 years. No problems in any region. In fact its a pleasure to watch and I look forward to it. Esp United in HD .... magic.

I still marvel at the picture my 40" XBR Bravia produces. Blu-ray and HDTV look absolutely fantastic.

Always had Sony televisions and they've never let me down.

They were never really in the game, because they don't/didn't believe that either solution was for the long term (plasma they basically shunned from the beginning). Sony LCD panels are produced by a joint venture company with Samsung (so yes, Samsung TVs have the same panels), and now also with another joint venture with Sharp.

Thanks for all the input.....can those suggesting LCD over plasma give me the reasons cos I always thought plasma would be best at around 50"

Not at all technical but Plasma's reflect like nothing else. The ones in our store you see everything reflecting back at you in the screen. LCD's you see nothing. If you've got lots of light coming into the room, it may be something to consider.

Plasmas seem to be much better for watching standard def than LCDs (well atleast my panasonic viera is compared to my mates' LCDs). The reflection really isn't a problem at home.

Out of the 4 vieras you posted before; the last one REALLY is worth £400 more because it has built in freesat (not the same as freeview). Freesat allows you to watch HD-channels for free (if i'm not mistaken). I went into the store to buy my tv without giving panasonic prior consideration but the store advisor and my eyes suggested I go for the panasonic over the samsung and sony. Pioneers are good but they're far too expensive. Go for a panasonic freesat and you definitely won't regret it!:D

Well, sort of, but I'm just shocked at how Wii output would look blown up to 50".

Money no object? I present: Pioneer PDP-LX5090 Kuro

I've seen that online at £1800ish...looks great I must admit but that seems a lot to spend a tele and do you REALLY get £400 more worth of TV over Spoons Panasonic at £1400?

The new Panasonic Th-50 Pz800 is meant to be brilliant. I'll probably get it next week. You can pick'em up for around £1400.

Come on Spoons, get out there and buy it. Then report back.

Marching, have you bought your TV yet?

Pioneer's are expensive but they offer the best quality, but not bang-for-buck, as you pay the premium for their superior quality.

You only get the panel in the box with them as well... so you'd need to fork out for: a wall bracket or stand (£100-£250); 2. Speakers if you don't use an Amp. and 5yr warranty if you don't buy from a good shop...

If you plan to watch footy or play fast moving games, you'd be wise not to scrimp on the initial outlay of your panel. The cheaper brands suffer with lots of bleed (especially on reds) and their orbiter (or whatever technology they use to avoid screen burn) is poorer.

You've also got to be careful of your viewing distances with a 50" panel. If you aren't watching much high definition TV, you've got to sit further back or the picture is most likely to look poor with lots of artificating you wouldn't associate with 4-figure tv.

1080p is important if you're interested in future-proofing your set and not having to go out and upgrade a few years down the line, but if you're only going to be playing a wii (which can only do 480p) it's not as big a concern, I guess. Generally, if you're going about spending four figures on a panel, I'd think you'd want something that can meet industry standards for a number of years, mind.

You can pick up a Pioneer PDP-LX5090 Kuro for £1800 with a 5-year warranty from Selfridges, which is a fantastic deal on one of the best panels on the market. That'll handle anything you throw at it for a good while yet. Not sure if it comes bundled with anything, but you can sort yourself a good deal on extras in store.

Not bought it yet...partly cos I am a lazy git but also cos the £2k looks better in my account than in somebody elses. ;)

My use of the Wii is only incidental and will wane as the novelty factor wears off....the main use will be for watching sport, films and the soaps (unless someone knows of a way to block them).

My mate spent £2500 on a 50" Pioneer before Xmas which looks amazing (even using it for the Wii Weaste) but I am not spending that much - would love to spend nearer the £1200 to the £1800 but I still wonder how much more TV you get when spending the extra 2/3/4 hundred quid over a cheaper model.

Cheers....the Panasonic with Freesat is high on my list of possibles.
