Finally getting an iPod

Yeah the car's system is designed for i-pod.

If I am only after music for the car and perhaps gym, am I not just better with a Nano though??

Depends on how much music you have I guess.

The nano costs about £120/£130 for the 8/16Gig versions. It is a fair bit smaller than the Classic.

The Classic is £200 and is 160gig.

Either would work then, like I said the main difference with the USB slot is that you'll be able to control it from your car rather than having to use the iPod itself.

It depends what you want, I had a 4gb Nano ages ago but I got sick of having to handpick what albums I wanted on there. If you're not going to be using it much though and don't have that much music then it would be a decent option.

Or just buy a memory card for your smartphone, put music on that, buy an aux cable and use that? That's what I would do if you don't need something with too much space.

take in mind thst an average song is around 3-4MB so do the maths on size requirement. Ipod touch can do photos etc too. Love mine but not as necessary if you have a good smartphone.

You need to stick with the 16GB Nano. Classics have mechanical hard drives(I think they still do anyway) and they can be temperamental when moving around. Nano is much better for the gym and running etc.

You can get a hell of a lot of music on 16GB, probably 4000-5000 tracks.

You can get some really good armbands for the Nano that are designed for exercise.

Right cheers everyone. I shall go out and buy a Nano then!

See if you can have a look at one first. They really are tiny! If you have fat fingers you'll be buggered.

Wow, the new ones are small. Mine is the previous version with the wheel, and that is great to use.

Where is the best place to download i-tunes from gents?

I am nipping to get a nano now. Think the 8GB should be sufficient.

How much music do you plan on having on it? I'd generally always advice to go for the big version because 8gb gets filled very fast. The little extra cost vs double the space is easy for me.

Well how many good quality songs will the 8GB hold?

Depending on the size(=quality) somewhere between 1500-2500. It depends on the quality if you're planning to rip CD's or download stuff though.

But obviously it's really about how much you use or think you will use. In the end taking the bigger one will just make sure you never (or well most likely) will have to remove songs to get new ones on. I'd definately go for the bigger one if you can afford it, the gain is good vs the money spent imo.

Well that was a wasted trip, store was open but electrical department shuts at 2000 hours. What the point of that is I don't know.

Anyway, do these things come with a driver CD? If they do the CD drive is broken on the laptop so I am pretty knackered.

You don't need a driver.

For the software, if you have Winamp installed on your computer I'd recommend using that instead of iTunes.

I'd use iTunes tbf, I prefer it over everything else. Very nice looking, simple and easy to use software.

Don't need a driver, it's literally a textbook definition of plug and play. Try and get more than 8GB though, 16 at least, you'll regret it otherwise. I promise you that.

Yes. Don't get 8GB. I got an iTouch with 8GB and by the time I had 350-400 songs + apps I had no space. You won't have apps with a classic so you can probably fit 500 songs or so with 8GB at a guess.

Well I am only getting the Nano so I won't get apps etc anyway will I?

I literally will only be using it for the car and the gym which is why I thought 8GB would be enough?

And I can just plug it in, download i-tunes and away I go? No discs?

Import the CD's onto iTunes.

iTunes stores all your music and videos. You use that to sort it, create playlists and whatnot.

I think 500-550 songs is what you'll get from a 8GB Nano. Is that enough for you? If so then it's no problem. Bare in mind you can have a thousand songs on your iTunes but untick certain albums/songs to keep in capacity.

Hmm, be careful though. You may end up keep putting songs off without wanting to take anything off if you're like me and it'll fill up pretty quick.

Average song size for decent quality is like 7MB, with an 8GB iPod, you'll have about 7.3GB usable, so roughly 1,042 songs maximum.

Would this be enough for your current collection plus future downloads and album purchases?

if so, crack on. I just know it's not for me, is all

And yes, plug it in to your computer, load up iTunes, name the device or something and just tick the songs you wanna add on to it, click "sync iPod" and all your songs boost and appear on it. Magical. 

1042? Ok I'm well off.

Yep, think about it

7-8MB average song size (anything else is excessive and unneeded) and 1,000 MB in a GB, 8 GB, minus the OS and such, 7.3 (roughly)

7,300 MB divided by 7MB (roughly) = 1,042 songs.

Im using 7.1gb on my iphone and i have 1159 songs

I have 5310 songs and am using 24.32 GB.

Like I said it depends on your song quality and size. Average size of a song from iTunes and ripped through iTunes using the default settings is around 7MB from my experience, usually 320kbps.

But you can get away with 128kbps on an .mp3 due to that being classed as 'CD quality' which would obviously bring the file size down considerably. All down to personal preference on quality and how loud you play, what bass and treble you like etc.

You made the right choice going for the Nano, I guess. I have an iPod touch. It's great, but its problem is its battery life (which is very important IMO for a portable music player). Haven't tried Nano myself but I can imagine it can last much longer, considering it only plays music files.

Also, the 16GB model is €149, and the 8GB model is €129. In short, get the 16GB model, end of.

Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side
The summer's gone, and all the flowers are dying
'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide.
You speak the sense, oh Danny boy
TheReligion must get an 8GB..
Because he would be able to show his might.

There are alot of good helpful men in this thread.

I am very happy about this and take my hat off to you all.
