I have finally decided to get an i-pod...

My PC has blown up so I have lost all my CD making facilities and I am sick of listening to the radio in my car so I think the best option is to sort on an i-pod and use it in the car.

Question is, which i-pod do I get? What is a good all rounder and which one will fit my car (BMW e92) best?

Thanks

Depends what you want from it? If you want apps and the internet then the itouch would be your best option.

Just music then a nano or a standard one would be your best bet. In regards to the car I think they should all fit easily.

Don't. Is now my advice on all apple products.

Unless you already have an expansive music collection on iTunes, I wouldn't recommend an iPod. Why restrict yourself?

You can get more flexible/cheaper portable music players if you look around. Does your car have a USB interface? If it does it'll be straightforward.

Why would I restrict myself with an i-pod?

I am confused here lads. Help me out. The car has a compatible interface yes.. I only want it for music

I'm thinking of getting my first ipod, probably a shuffle...And despite having resisted ipod products for so long, the reality is that they have so many superior sound docks to what you can find for say an Android or some other mp3 player

We went hiking last week and my brother in law used a shuffle with a little portable sound dock fixed onto his backpack as we hiked up a mountain...It was pretty kewl, small and cheap

Ipod is the main one to go for, user friendly interface etc.

If you just want the music then an Ipod classic is probably your best bet, tonnes of space like duffer says and very durable.

Why would I be restricted though like RK said?

Cheers

Get the iPod classic then, I had one and had it not for me losing it when moving out it would've lasted me years. iPod Touches are extremely unreliable and constantly have buttons, batteries and other parts breaking within them. Besides, the classic has a feckload of space for music.

I wouldn't say your restricting yourself, obvously Apple aren't the only MP3 maker but I'd say they are the best.

Prices depends on size of memory needed.

Can you still download music from anywhere and add it to your i-pod or do you have to use all of their software etc?

Stupid question, but does music on an Ipod come for free? I've also been considering getting one too.

You can download it from pretty much anywhere and it will be iTunes compatible. You don't need to purchase it through the store.

Maybe they've changed but I'm sure you can only play music through an iPod classic with headphones in. Something to bare in mind if you wanna have it playing without a dock.

I-Pods are very good MP3 players and have a 100 times the number of aftermarket accessories than any other brand. My car stereo fully supports I-pod (no other brand is supported), and many manufacturers support only I-pod. I have alps integrated I-pods into my wife's and sons cars very early with aftermarket interfaces.

Yep that's true.

I've got a classic and I love it, 160gb of storage space which I'll probably never fill up, compatable with most of the docks on the market and pretty sturdy too. If you're going to get one you might as well get a refurb like I've done, they're exactly the same but you'll save yourself £30. It's just a shame you have to use itunes which is a heap of shite.

As in itunes, the program for your PC which plays the music you've got; there might be ways around it but generally it's recommended that you use that to sync your music onto your ipod.

and Itunes can really feck up your mobile devices as I've discovered this week.

I presume i-tunes comes with it for free? and you can add music to your i-tunes library witout having to buy them through the store?

Itunes is free anyway. You can download it right now if you want.

I am very particular. Right well just checked and my car has a AUX dock and USB dock.

What does that mean and what do I need to buy

Yes & yes.

iTunes is basically their version of Windows Media Player (but shittier), you simply add the folders with your music in it to the library and it's ready to sync onto the iPod.

Means you can play music off a memory stick if you wanted to.

Cheers, what about the USB dock though?

I guess that would work, not tried it myself though. Probably best to check if your stereo has iPod compatability?

A few of my mates have bought a head unit for their car which comes with a mini-USB stick which they then use to put music on it. The main difference between using that and an AUX cable is that you control your music using the actual car stereo rather than using the iPod itself.

Yeah the car's system is designed for i-pod.

If I am only after music for the car and perhaps gym, am I not just better with a Nano though??

usb dock is probably for charging. The ipod should ship with the appropriate cable but probably worth having a few spares.

the aux will be the music in. Just need a simple audio cable with both ends that look like the headphone jacks.

I usually buy these cables from meritline (less than a buck a piece) though not sure if you can in the uk.
