Do you teach film then?
I have to admit, I'm just as guilty of the above. When I was at uni, I had a film lecturer who specialised in European Cinema (especially in that post-WWII era)... and one of the first things we learnt from his senior students was to pick essay topics as far away from that as we could. Quite a bit of students went for the anime-directors route... I personally chose the "obscure female directors from developing nations and specialising in feminist texts" route![]()
Yes I do teach film...and media for that matter. Two 'soft subjects' in one...like money for old rope!
The student who went for Ghibli didn't, in the end, do a very good job. He just gave extended reviews of certain films without critiquing them or comparing them to other forms of animation. Not that I could tell, but a good friend of mine knows a hell of a lot more and marked it for me!
