It's about the type of player. Arnautovic would be someone you can play direct to like Fellaini. Ings doesn't do that job and is much worse than Arnautovic and Fellaini anyway. Perhaps Jose will still want a backup striker but after the FA Cup final he did mention a lack of presence without Lukaku and Fellaini.

Okay so if you want a physical back up striker who scores as little as fellaini get one for cheap, the only one who thinks it will cost 50m to replace him are his agents and fans in love with mourinho

I can't even blame Moyes anymore. It's 4 years since he left. Blame the managers after him who've continued to use Fellaini and some of the other average players instead of moving them on. 4 years after his departure we shouldn't be in this situation but here we are.
 
Worst news since we signed him on the 2013 transfer window deadline.

150+ appearances. So many players better than we've missed out on. So many players better than we've let go of. There will be youth players missing out on first team opportunities because of this lump. There will be transfers we will miss out on because this guy just won't budge.

I'm hoping that this 2-year deal will be a way of getting a small transfer fee from him.

Jose can't pull the 'City have better players than us' card this coming season.

FA cup and Europa League. Belgium have done pretty well too. Again I am arguing against the people who say Fellaini offers nothing and has "little to no footballing intelligence" -- pure stupidity. I am not saying this is necessarily a good contract renewal.

Although I am a fan of Fellaini I totally understand how people are frustrated and want more quality midfielders. I totally understand not wanting him at Man United. Just don't understand taking away any qualities he does have.
 
Decent squad option that is happy to play off the bench and is a difficult opponent for any team to try to contain. I think he is unfairly maligned by large parts of the fanbase TBF.
 
I dont mind Fellaini, but just maybe we are only going to get one more player this window, and maybe MU need the money to buy this one player, hence sticking with Fellaie because he is asset whilst having more funds for whoever.
 
Ain't against him or anything, but after that interview him renewing his contract with us leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

He may well have been a key member, but he wasn't MOTM in the Europa final. That part is the myth Robbie was referring to, Herrera was the official Man of the Match.

Belgium have done horribly during this period, won nothing or challenged for anything.

So basically mid table level stuff? Is that the level we are currently aspiring to?

I do agree with everything else in your post though. He offers something but that something isnt special and can be replicated easily at a cheaper cost by getting a decent midfielder or a back up physical striker.

We'll also play shit football along the way and the donkey will get paid after slating our club publicly.

The people rejoicing at him re-signing a contract (which are not oppo fans) have seriously got their priorities wrong. You are not a top red nor are you funny. Our club is getting Liverpool'd in front of our eyes. Call me melodramatic but it's much easier to get in a hole than get out of one and we seem intent on digging a deeper one for ourselves.

I hope if and when this gets announced, people give the announcement hell. Absolute shite from Mourinho and the club's hierarchy.

And you know that how exactly? The evidence points to the lump playing plenty of games. Last season our midfield was supposed to be Pogba, Matic and Herrera and guess who basically was in the starting line-up each time he was healthy?

We've lost Carrick and we needed to add quality to midfield. We've added one player who cannot even be a sub for Brazil. I think he'll improve us but enough to catch City? No chance.

Based on previous evidence, Marouane Griezmann will start more games, as otherwise he would not have stayed. At the same time, we're happy to be rid of one of the best young players in the world because Mourinho does not appear to know how to manage anyone who's not exactly like him.

Well mate, Fellaini or not I think its literally been proven now we won't win any major trophy under Mourinho, literally the best we can hope for is second place again. It really stinks but we have to accept the fact that he is a shadow of his former self. The FA cup final was an absolute atrocity to watch, and the fact that we lost to that piss poor Chelsea side still makes me pissed. Getting knocked out by Sevilla was even worse and the fact that we actually were 0-2 down at home was an absolute embarrassment.

I know people will think the likes of you and me are moaning but seriously if you look at last season, yes we finished second which I accept is improvement compared to the season before but if you look at it as a whole, there was more negative things happening than positive, one game we are decent, the other we get fecked against the likes of Newcastle and a relegated WBA at home, also dropping 4 points at home to the likes of Burnley and Southampton. To me Mourinho has lost it and I can't in a million years see him win the league with us or quite frankly any other trophy, and honestly I think this will be his last season with us.

Cheers. I am not here to win brownie points but express my genuine opinion. I have been happy to trust in previous seasons but I've seen/heard/listened to this story far too many times to buy it again. Fans need to make their opinion heard.

I wouldn't mind if we kept him and signed another top class midfielder but we won't. He also won't just play 'off the bench as a last 10 minutes option'. Not if Mourinho's decisions of the past two seasons are anything to go by.

I just have to wonder what it'll take for some people to change their opinion.

Iv got nothing against fellaini to be honest - if we were a team with an ability to play beautifully crafted team based football then having fellaini within our ranks & on our bench makes sense as a plan B.

However when some fans are convinced that Fellaini is a different,alternative method to how we usually play (a type of football that is based on getting the best out of certain individuals) - that's when I'd prefer to see him gone because he is just another individual. Our plan B should ATLEAST be players such as Martial or Rashford - especially upfront, players who play differently, directly with the ball on the ground. Wishful thinking but in our current situation it resembles a plan B. When some fans won't blink an eye lid if Martial goes & are generally 'pleased' that Fellaini is staying - that's just taking the mickey out of a lot of us surely?

Herrera played 39 games last season, Fellani played 23

Carrick played 5 games for us last season, so I assume you reckon Fred's going to play less than that?

Yeah personally, this bothers me quite a lot actually if true. We finally had a chance to get rid, but instead bend over to his wage demand. Really baffles me how a manager for any top club would want him, aerial presence and thats it, he literally offers nothing else he's also slow as feck and any midfielder with pace just runs past him with ease. I'm really tired of talking about him but bottom line is he should not play for a massive club like this. He was so awful against Sevilla I felt sick he actually started ahead of Pog, but hey what the feck can we do if Mourinho wants him to stay then he most likely will which is quite silly if you ask me. Everton was a perfect team for Fellaini, he is out of his fecking depth here.

I agree, another terrible decision from the board and Jose has got this all wrong.
Our upper management and transfer policy leaves a lot to be desired.

If this is their idea of catching City they are sorely mistaken and I dont see us winning a major trophy if something doesnt change.
 
Probably Jose’s hope all along. Not have to reinforce midfield any further and use those funds on one of those CBS whose names keep popping up.

Educated guess, as is yours

Who says our midfield should have been the three lads you named ? We started the season with Matic and Pogba paired in 4-2-3-1, you'll have to ask Mourinho why he switched to playing three in the middle when we'd started the season flying with a two, but you shouldn't need to ask why Fellaini was preferred to Herrera if you'd been watching because even Herrera's biggest supporters will admit he was poor.

We'll have to see with Fred, but it's unrealistic to expect a guy that was probably the last pick in the squad, and who went into the tournament injured get any playing time.

Who is we, the Manager, the club, or the fans ?

Man. United shouldn't really be playing in that competition in next 5 years so not really a good argument to make he did well in a competition Man. United are desperate to avoid.

He was very poor at home to Sevilla so that's more relevant to his usefulness going forward.
 
I do think this news indicates Mourinho isn't quite as sharp/ruthless as he used to be.

Similar to Wenger constantly giving out contracts to mediocre Arsenal players like Denilson, Jenkinson and hoping they'd come good one year.

At Chelsea he froze out Shevchenko when he didn't cut it. Ashley Cole was another who was quickly put to the bench when he came back for a second spell there.

I know he loves Fellani but he's hardly Drogba is he. Keeping him just seems a very strange decision.

Yes, he hasn’t covered himself in glory by delaying or playing cat & mouse with the club but he doesn’t throw tantrums like some of our other bench players. Fellaini knows his role & his position in the pecking order.

I rate Fellaini , but 95% of united fanbase don't. Actually he isn't just big lump player like Peter Crouch although it's his prominent attributes. Still remember how we forced Real Madrid to defend after we put him in during Super Cup , how we played well in first 5 games and so with him playing regularly , he is useful in many tactical situation.
Fellaini should be the least of our problem , he’s a bench player and a plan B.
If we had a better player to execute plan A we don't have to use him at all.
