Faouzi Ghoulam | Napoli LB

Sounds like Napoli briefing the media. "Please pay the release clause for our crocked LB, so we can buy a better, fit LB with the money"

I'd rather we went straight for Grimaldo ourselves, he was impressive against us.

He has a buy out clause, so doubt De Laurentis can sell for more..
Yeah, but no one will pay the clause until he gets back to full fitness and plays. If he wanted the cash now, he there's no way it would be for the full release clause.

Ghoulam is very close to full fitness and it would be to silly to sell him now when they're in the mix to win the Scudetto.

Very good attacker, comfortable on the ball and at 26, he's 4 years older than Shaw which is a nice balance. We'd get Ghoulam in his prime while Shaw continues to develop. Would be excited for this if he returns from injury as good as before.

Here we go again regarding return to play after ACL reconstruction... The evidence points quite clearly that returning within 9 months after surgery is correlated with an increased risk of a new ACL injury, both in the previous injured leg and the non injured leg. Returning within 6 months is just plain stupid and the risk of getting a new injury is sky high. The Napoli Medical Staff have shown their incompetence multiple times, just ask Milik who returned within 3,5 months and just injured his other knee. They are really risking their players careers..

Obviously we won't buy him in January, he will have until August to prove he is fit and back to his best. If he's nearly ready to play again he should be fully fit by the summer no problem.

#mufc are preparing a €30m + bonuses bid for Faouzi Ghoulam (Napoli) in the coming weeks. Other English clubs also interested [rmc]

Hasn’t he been injured all season? I’d hope we do a proper, thorough medical and don’t just take him on hoping it won’t be a recurring injury/problem.

According to [RMC], "While he is healing a kneecap and should return to training in the coming days in Naples, Faouzi Ghoulam is courted by Manchester United, who is moving forward on this issue. Despite his serious injury that occurred last February in training with a broken
kneecap right knee, Faouzi Ghoulam arouses envy in the transfer market. The left-back should resume training with Naples in the coming days, and is being courted by Manchester United. An offer of 30 million euros in preparation
The English club has overseen for several seasons.

the Algerian international, and the Red Devils have come into contact with the entourage of the player, according to a source close to the English club. United should go on the offensive in the coming weeks with a first bid of around 30 million euros (with bonus) for the player

under contract until June 2022. Manchester is not the only club interested, other clubs English have also positioned themselves"

One of the best left backs in Europe when fit. Would be a risk worth taking for the reported £22m +bonuses fee...

If we are to sign Ghoulam, is is imperative that we undertake due diligence in assessing what shape his knee is in. Pre-injury, it would have made a lot of sense to sign him, especially considering he was at that stage on a Bosman at the end of this season (Although he has since signed a new contract). Now, considering both an injured ACL and a fractured kneecap, we would have to be exceptionally confident in his knee in order to sign him. Knee injuries stand out IMO vis-a-vis other injuries in that they are more likely to have a longer-term impact, possibly career-ending. Given that concern, the only way you would spend €30m on Ghoulam is if you were fully confident in the condition of his knee.

Think we'll sign Tierney too if the RMC report is true...

Napoli will not accept that. They'll wait for him to gain fitness and his valuation to increase.

What do we need 2 LBs for? 3 if you still include Shaw.

Ghoulam is on a different level to Tierney anyway but we’d have to make sure he could withstand the rigours of the PL first

Wouldn't say no to him for 22 million plus bonuses but would have preferred Alex Sandro
He's the best available LB and yeah he would cost upwards of 50 million but Ghoulam plus a young LB would also cost 50 million plus

Why do you doubt that? Not saying we are but I believe we've been linked before.

Given his recent injuries and our lack of a viable alternative option at leftback, it is unthinkable that we would sign this player. We'll be shopping for someone to come immediately into the starting XI.

Unless they think there's a chance he's crocked, in which case it would make sense to get rid while he still retains some value.

My main worry with him would be he's recovering from an ACL surgery. Really want to get Tierney and groom him for that. Ghoulam is 27, and players never recover instantly from ACL surgeries. Might take a while for him to get back to his best. Especially if he'd move to an intense league right away... Would not be the best move IMO.

Hypothetically-speaking, signing both Tierney and Ghoulam would make more sense. IMO, both Shaw and Young need to be replaced in the short-to-medium-term future, so signing a LB in their relative prime and another promising young LB as an understudy would be a good strategy. However, while Tierney may fit the second criteria, I'm not entirely confident that post-injury Ghoulam fits the first criteria. Who knows though, his knee mightn't be in that bad a condition; only time will tell.

That probably makes sense then.

If I'm not wrong, he recovered from his ACL tear in January and had started training.
But just as he was getting ready to start, he tore his meniscus or something.
Right now it's not the ACL injury that's keeping him out

Apparently he has a €35 million release clause for clubs outside Italy.

He has a patella fracture now accroding to transfermarkt. Anybody know if it is the same knee? I dont know if the first injury has something to do with his injury now, but knee injuries always are tricky.

Yes it's the same knee (his right).

Odd we'd go for him if true - his injury seems a bad one.

The 20-year-old's ability to operate in both full back positions and as a central defender is of value to Mourinho, who prefers footballers capable of working in a range of systems.

I actually like Ghoulam's offensive game more than Sandro's, but his injury issues are a worry.

Bouhafshi meant to be the real deal right?

He's the real deal, looks like we are genuinely in for him then.

Really happy with what I've seen from him but little scared about his injury.

He also said we were in negotiations for James and Fabinho last summer (with the latter being one of our "priorities of the transfer window"), neither of which seems to have had any substance.
