I wish us Man United fans could be as wise and intelligent as the Liverpool supporters. They're the best.

I think your recent posts, ChampionsElect, are the best. With all the "Heskey's the best in the world" and "Liverpool are great" stuff.

It's sad but true....you should know anyway, you spend far more time posting on Koptalk than over here!

Personally I would sacrifice winning against that lot if it meant United were going to win the league, any day.
To be fair, they have improved tremendously over the last two seasons and seem to be going in the right direction. But there are still a few facts that remain. They do not play an attractive style of football against anyone! When they do come up against teams like Barca, United or anyone they may percieve as a threat or a favourite in the game they use negative tactics. Hope to get a goal on the break and have been successful at doing it.
There is always going to be a trade off depending on what you want. The difference between United and Liverpool is this. Liverpool of today will get results always by using negative tactics, which are hard to change mid game when you are chasing a game. United will and always have been, prone to the odd farcical defeat because the brand of football they generally play (and are famous for it) is positive and attacking. The balance was exceptional three years ago with a strong defence and a strike force that would score at will, and a midfield happy to work with both.
If you are just happy, as a Liverpool fan to get results, fine. But I think that a lot of Liverpol fans will quickly get bored of this because no matter how much we like to slag them off, a lot of them do know football and will not accept being short changed for too long.</strong><hr></blockquote>
I agree with some of your points there but to suggest that Utd have always played a vast attacking style of play is nonsense. Against Bayern on Tuesday you initially set out to stifle the Germans. When you beat Newcastle (a vastly flair based side) to the league title in 95/96 you defended well and were reliant on Cantona to provide the goals in numerous 1-0 wins. This also was the case in the FA cup final that year when you played us (at the time the more attractive footballing side of the two) and set out to stifle us in Midfield.

CL is a tad harder than the regular league, after all nobody has won it more than twice in the last 10 years
At least it's still better than pool's though...

Quite a fair post. I do agree we are not at all the attractive passing side that once ravaged all opposition. I for one do hope the next phase in the rebuilding process will include more passing and moving, more play over the wings.
Part of this negative attitude, however is undoubebly down to the fact that our passing team of the mid-90s got beaten because of bad defending (the sheer memory of Babb and James in a Reds shirt still turn my stomach), this has caused quite a trauma within the club and only winning the league can get rid of that (I hope). Saying; on the other hand; that Utd have been an attractive side throughout the 90s is rubbish. The most attractive side Ive seen in the 90s is Newcastle. The fashion in which you beat them to the league was far short of attractive imho...
It was clear to me before (and previous posts can certify that) that we do need to take this next step if we really want to return to our old ways. However, as you aknowledged, we have made tremendous progress over the last 2,5 years and you cannot expect everything to come at once (it took SAF more than a couple of years to turn Utd into the side they were from 97 on). Every year I have seen us progress. First we failed in the topgames and the games against the small teams and were crap away from home. Then we started beating the topteams but still failed against minor opposition and away. Since the beginning of 2001 however we have started to beat the smaller teams (bar Bolton) often quite comprehensively and have shown signs of consistency (9 wins and a draw in the last 10 games of the season, when it really mattered).
At this time we are top of the league. In that respect I hope the humiliation (in my mind it was nothing less than that) against Barcelona might have opened a few eyes and hopefully will help us grow even stronger in the near future.
I dont want to slag your team off, but if you look at the evolutions over the past 12 months you will have to admit that your stock has gone down considerably while ours is up big time. I didnt look into the stats but if you'd make up a table for the year 2001 Im quite confident we would be ahead of you by a margin. No coincedence I think.
Anyway, Im glad to fulfill SAF's wish for a 'run for his money' and the least you'll have to admit is that we are doing that at the moment. In all honesty, I wouldnt fancy your chances in the leage if you loose against Chelsea...
Anyway, looking at the League Table this morning I had a weird feeling of deja-vu... The 80's all over again... (where's that 'Wham!' - record ? )
