FAO that guy who said he'd seen the doors live

I don't like the Beatles, generic trash for the most part with hardly any musical value. The Doors are greater than the Beatles IMO.

Talking about music is like dancing about architecture ... OK, that's bollocks, but there's only so much you can say about it when you're using this staunch "so tell me why it's good" attitude. It's all subjective, course it is, but you do hear quite a lot of this 'The Beatles are nonsense' and 'what was so good about The Doors' business, and I don't really see the point of it. With this mentality, the only thing of substance you can really talk about is how technically good people are at their instruments, which is by no means what makes a band great

Just listen to LA Woman, then try coming back and telling us you dont like them. One of the greatest songs ever IMO.

Let us start with the first point. Why are they "Fantastic Musicians"? Sorry I don't get this part.

The fact that almost all of their live shows were improvised around Jim's words instead of rehearsed. They also never played the same song exactly the same way when live (I didn't word that very well)

Also...listen to the fecking music!

Poetic in what way? You mean drug fueled?

Poetic in the way that he always wanted to be a poet (or make films), he grew up reading poetry and he released a book of his poetry. Many of The Doors songs also included stanza's of his poetry

Were there any bands in the 60s who didn't do acid/weed?

...

Even if you ignore the importance of Jim Morrison as a personality, a musician and a lyricist, they were a great band. The way they used the keyboard and the electric piano was pioneering, there's still probably no band who's ever touched that.

Yup, Manzarek was voted the 3rd best musician in the US at one point I do believe and his use of the organ rendered a bassist useless (I personally think a bassist would have killed The Doors' sound anyway).

I've heard their songs.

As musicians, they're decent.Didn't appeal to my musical tastes though. Is that enough for you or do you want to stuff some more condescending crap down my throat?

It's all a matter of opinion, personally I don't like the Beatles and I don't really listen to Led Zeppelin, the Stones or Hendrix (although I can appreciate his guitar playing) but the Doors really do it for me.

If it's not for you, it's not for you.

Yeah, he used the electric piano live to play the equivalent of bass parts, but they did use a bassist on record, right? But you are right, the organ parts do serve the purpose of the bass and it's part of what gives them such a distinctive sound

Telling someone his musical tastes are shit, or his choice of reading is shit is the height of condescendence.I'm not really supposed to have the same taste as you, am I?I'll like who the feck I want.

Not on the first album, latter albums yes.

What?

I didn't call your musical tastes shit:wenger:

I was making a general point about music, and if certain bands aren't for you (not specifically you) then they're not for you.

oi LK.

Am I right in thinking that "Lizard King", is a line from one of thier songs? I barely know any of The Doors, although I do like what very little of them Ive heard. I think one of the tracks I have, Jim says "I am the lizard king, I can do anything"?

The Doors are my number one band of all time.

Every album and every song is awesome.

Jim Morrison RIP.

Why do you think that I may think that say Beethoven's 5th has a high musical value, and I also think that the Beetles has very little and is generic trash? I'm all for expression, even to the detriment of technical ability, but music is not only art, it is also a technical ability, and I would say that for the most part it is not the technical or artistic ability of the musicians performing it, but rather the composer and thus the composition of the work. You should not really compare the Beetles to Beethoven in any case, but rather to the folk musicians of the past. Unfortunately we know very little about them. Generally however, both the Doors, the Beatles, and every "pop" musician since are just that, akin to the folk musicians of old producing light entertainment works to be played in the corner of a tavern over a few jars of flat yet strong ale.

OK then, but why bother saying the Beatles or the Doors are rubbish when your opinion on the matter is pretty much moot due to your issue with the whole concept of popular music?
