thought it was pretty clear that the way to send him home was to kill him, which is why Cotillion did it. He was always killable but the gods wanted his power
Who was using that power since the chaining? Can't think of anyone else before the Assail go for it in TCG. Hard to think that the gods were complicit in Burn's poisoning!
What was his power actually? Chaos?

The human gods. The FA tried to hijack them by taking the heart. The gods weren't complicit, the CG poisoned Burn as a last ditch attempt to win his freedom. My understanding of it is his power was his though in the malazan reality he was forced to draw from Chaos since it was being stolen. Possibly associated with Chaos outright, given he was an alien god/not attuned to the existing reality

Guys thanks for suggesting the Gentleman Bastards. Done with them. What should I read next?

Will check it out man. Thanks! Should I just read the Farseer Trilogy or the other books too?
I'd recommend reading all the books more specifically in this order: The Farseer Trilogy --> The Liveship Traders Trilogy --> The Tawny Man Trilogy --> The Rain Wild Chronicles --> Fitz and Fool Trilogy

Of the above you could skip The Rain Wild Chronicles but I'd recommend reading it just for the sake of continuity.

Yep, endorse this. Rain Wild is shit (I gave 2/5 to all 4 books in goodreads) but you might get confused reading Fitz and Fool without first reading it.

For what is worth, I think that Liveship Traders is easily the best saga in the series.

I'll get started with Farseer then. It will take me a month to get to the next one anyway. Thanks for the input guys!

Haven't read the series but it was highly recommended to me. Over 4.5 on goodreads as well. Please share your thoughts when you complete the books
Still on hols but really enjoyed them. Plenty of twists.

Does the Dark Tower series count as fantasy? I'm on book seven at the moment, which is the last book and it's making me really sad that it's nearly over.

Listen to the author re the Dark Tower. All I'm saying.

Finally finished the Kharkansas 2 books. Sigh. Really annoying he's not finishing them, even if 90 percent was a serious slog.

I completely forgot I had A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms on my Kindle. I just finished The Hedge Knight and absolutely loved it. It's been so long since I read ASOIAF that I forgot just how good GRRM is. He should release more books in that universe. Specifically ones that deal with like winter and winds and stuff.

Although one bit in The Hedge Knight annoyed me immensely:
He never went back for Sweetfoot! The heartless bastard!

It's great. Good, old fashioned medieval fantasy. I prefer it to ASOIAF.

Finished City of Blades. Started City of Miracles.

Whilst the books are easy and fast read, I can't make up my mind about them. The writing seems improved in book 2 as compared to book 1 but something seems lacking.

Finished City of Stairs. Fantastic book. Starting on City of Blades now

Love them both, though I have such(entitled) resentment towards GRRM now I doubt I could enjoy anything new he releases in that setting. Allowing another medium to adapt his unreleased work, not exactly protecting his artistic integrity. He had years, he knew the score from the moment he signed the contract, now he is in the bizarre situation where his next book is going to feel like one of those accompanying works that get released with some major films, almost like his own fan fiction.

Never read it. Is there a billion characters?
These novellas and the ASOIAF series are like chalk and cheese. They're far, far simpler, focussing almost exclusively on Dunk and Egg. There are still tons of peripheral characters but they aren't integral to the story, so if you can't remember who their great grandfather is it doesn't really matter. They're not nearly as dark as his other works, and I know you prefer your books a bit gritty, so go into them with the view they're going to be classic, medieval fantasy, or at the very least as a bit of a relief read between other series.

Sold. I don't need gritty, necessarily. I love The Hobbit after all. But this sounds good. And I like eggs.

I got a notice from Tor Books yesterday saying that finally, after almost 18 years, Glen Cook is coming out with another Black Company story. The notice says:
"The father of Grimdark returns ... Glen cook returns to the Chronicles of the Black Company series with Port of Shadows. The soldiers of the Black Company don't ask questions, they get paid. But being the Lady's favored is attracting the wrong kind of attention and has put a target on their backs, and the Company's historian, Croaker, has the biggest target of all."

From this blurb, it appears to me that Port of Shadows does not continue from where we last left the Company in Soldiers Live. I have mentioned in a previous post that, from the way Cook tied up the story in Soldiers Live, I couldn't see how he would be able to continue the story. It looks to me like Port of Shadows must be covering a period in the annals before the Company went South. But we'll see in September. I'll certainly get a copy.

I thought it was mentioned before that it will take place somewhen before the books of South. As much as I love the series, that does not inspire me that much to read it.

I'm pretty far into Blood Song right now and it's been fantastic all the way. I've read there's a huge dip in quality for the second and third book in the trilogy but I don't want it to end, think someone on here also commented on it. So how bad is the rest? Bad enough to retrospectively ruin the first book?

Not for me no I enjoyed the story all the way to the end. Can understand others have different opinions but this is mine.

Second is decent but there is a large drop in quality from the first one (which is fantastic IMO). Third one is the worst fantasy book I have ever read.

The problem with reading the second book is that the story arch is not finished, so you will like to read the third. At the contrary, first one works excellent as standalone (and it was meant to be so, but then it got famous and Ryan got a publishing deal).

Well your certainly not on the fence about the third book. I'm not quite at the end of the first so I don't know how satisfying the conclusion will be. I just know I love these characters and the style of writing, so I want more of it.

For me, Soldiers Live is probably the most perfect endings across all fantasy books! I hope he doesn't try to resume that thread.

I need to browse through the North books again before I jump into this!

I don't think I want another book in the series, however much I enjoyed it. There's nothing I'm desperate to have explored, and I think the series, as you say, was wrapped up very nicely. Will another book add anything to the series? I don't think so.

I'll still get it, mind...

Yeah, Blades was the weakest of the trilogy....but Miracles is the best of the lost. So don't give up!
It wasn't a weak book, just hard to stomach for me. Left me wishing sigrud would go berserk on the saypuri parliament

And i liked Mulaghesh better in the first book

Ok I have decided not to read book 2 and 3 of Raven's Shadow. Just finished Blood Song and it was magnificent, I want it to remain in my memory like that. I'm thinking about reading Riyria (whatever came first, Revelations or Chronicles). Anyone read that?
