The Shards of Dominion and Devotion were Splintered and trapped in the Cognitive Realm by Odium. While the power of most other Shards resides in the Spiritual Realm, Odium has locked the power of Dominion and Devotion in the Cognitive Realm to ensure that nobody on Sel could gain those Shards. This makes the Cognitive Realm on Sel extremely dangerous as anyone who comes there unprepared would be ripped apart by the power of the Shards, now collectively known as the Dor.

Examples of Splinters are Honorspren (Splinters of Honor), the Unmade (Splinters of Odium), the Divine Breath that Returned hold (Splinters of Endowment), and the Aons inside of Seons (Splinters of Devotion)

This might explain why some shards are 'killed' while Ruin and Preservation despite being killed, it was possible to merge them and so now they are hold from Sazed.

no love for malazan? deadhouse landing is brilliant. I'm really liking the path to ascendancy trilogy(? hopefully it's no longer a trilogy!)

I don’t know where you boys find the time! I’ll get onto these in about 2 to 3 years.

Any recommendations for a non-avid reader for a good (easy to read and easily available) fantasy series?

Mistborn Trilogy
The Kingskiller Chronicles
Gentleman Bastard

All three are easy to read, and very enjoyable.

Audible has a sale on at the moment and Brent Weeks' Lighthringer is in it. The series worth reading?

You should get something simple.

City of Stairs is a good standalone book.
Magician by Raymond Feist ( just beginner and master, not the whole rift war series)
Black Magician by Trudi Canavan
Bartimaeus trilogy by Jonathan Stroud
David Gemmell Drenai Saga is a good starting point too.

Cheers, wjat would you say it was closest to stylistically Revan?
It reminds me of Raven's Shadow to sone degree. I don't think that it is as good as the first book in that series, but neither it sucks as much as the third book. There mught also be some small similarities with Long Price Quartet, and A Song of Ice and Fire, but those similarities are smaller.

Speaking of Brent Weeks I just finished a Night Angel prequel novella called Perfect Shadow. I didn't follow it overly well given it's been years since I read Night Angel trilogy, but I got the gist of it and very much enjoyed it. I had started Lightbringer years ago, but I got the fecking huge paperback just before I got my Kindle so ended up never finishing it despite enjoying it. I keep meaning to go back to it, it's on the list.

I couldn't decide which fantasy series to carry on with after finishing Perfect Shadow, so I ended up starting The Passage. It's apparently some sort of post apocalyptic vampire story, very interesting so far.

In defense of the length of Oathbringer. It should be noted that Oathbringer is not a stand-alone book, but only book three of a 10-volume epic. Sanderson needs to provide usreaders information about how the world works, else the subsequent volumes would not be easily understandable. More important, the nature of the story he is telling requires the kind of build-up he is providing. There are several main characters through whom he is telling the story: Kaladin, Dalinar, Shallan, Adolin, and Szeth, along with other important characters like Renarin and Jasnah. Each of these characters needs to progress through 5 levels to achieve full radianthood (Adolin so far has not even taken the first step, and it is still unclear if he ever would). Sanderson needs to show us how each person progresses from one level to the other, and he needs to do it through realistic situations that show us readers the emotional and personal growth experienced by the person and how they overcome whatever trials they go through, in order to for us readers to agree that they deserve to go up to the next level. Anything less, and the book would fail ... the characters would no longer be believable. I disagree strongly with some of the opinions expressed here, that he could cut up to half of the book out. It may read be crisper to read if cuts out 400 or 700 pages, but it won't be the same story any more. If I want to read a story about characters whose powers I don't understand and have no clue how they gain and use those powers, I'll read Malazan.

@Edgar Allan Pillow

I don't follow the cosmere too closely and I am not an expert on the terminology but I don't think the Honorspren are splinters of Honor, as OB shows that the originals like Sylphrena were around before Honor was splintered. Nor can the Unmade be splinters of Odium, because Odium is NOT splintered!. I think you mean slivers, though, as I said, I'm not an expert on the terminology.

@DMacgraw

Nothing on giving a proper back story, but this just meanders....Evi was a turning point and there as just few pages on Dalinar relationship with her. It's almost like Evi was just a footnote, when she should have been far more importance, imo. Honestly I don't have a much deeper insight into Dalinar than after previous 2 books, though I know lot more details about his past. He committed a crime, then erased it from his memory. Back to normal then.

Why did Odium stop influencing Dalinar? Why did that Unmade 'Thrill' suddenly leave him? Since he erased Evi, he should be back to what he was before, right?

And why Dalinar? Seems Gavilar was already working to bring back Desolation. And Sadeas would have been a better candidate as agent of evil.

Just finished it. AWESOME!

The use of so many legends of original novel as just characters is refreshing and brilliant. I'd live to read a segment with Dancer, Dassem and Tayschrenn in same fight. Would be unbelievable.

I'm surprised we have Claws ahead of Talons. Earlier books offered very less on Emperor's own mage skills and this rectified that. He's more powerful than Tayschrenn? Amazing. Surly is amazing too.

I hope there's a next book which takes the alliance further and have them conquering and founding Malazan empire.

@Revan

From what I read the only ascendants in Stormlight saga are those who have taken the original shards. Harmony is the only other person who managed to ascend. When Odium says Dalinar ascends, I think he joins Harmony. Not sure if that's on same level as original ascendants or still a step below...but I think he's Honor. Or as close as one can get to him. He opposed Odium directly and won. Surely anything lesser can't do that.

And I'm happy to get back into the Malazan world. The best of all. Such awesomeness! I need to go back and read my favorite segments again...
Seriously :lol:

Btw
kellanved's name :lol: dassem and tay are ridiculously overpowered, and nice to see kel finally coming into his power. He's obviously not as powerful as tay but he's got two elder warrens and is a true genius. The napans were amazing, but when Dujek introduced "Jack" my heart couldn't take it :drool:

Can't wait for the next one :drool:. And we got dancer vs cowl 1.

Plus, so far kel seems far more interested in ascending than building an empire. Given what we know of Kell, it will be interesting to see when and how he changes. Dancer too for that matter. It also further justifies Surly's later actions imho

bring on the karsa saga:drool:

I think the final book in the trilogy will cover them taking the First Throne and bringing the T'lan Imass into their fold. I can't wait for it.

Kel and Dancer seem to go in and out of Deadhouse in this book. But I thought they fought their way in Night of Knives. Is that a different deadhouse?

Some other questions to be answered.
- Why does Dassem want to kill Hood? The backstory of his daughter is yet to be told.
- Why do the Napans oppose Surly in main series? What made her turn on the Old Guard?

Just finished Gardens of the Moon, should I bother with the Tales of Bauchelain and Korbal Broach novellas?

I skipped all the other stuff and just read the main series. Pure guess but i'd say that series is fairly throwaway and not hugely relevant.
The characters show up elsewhere and they just dont seem that serious.

Started Dust of Dreams yesterday, will finish the last 2 books over christmas. Taking me a while to start remembering who's who again.

they're funny, but read deadhouse gates, it's the best fantasy book i've ever read

It's the same, my guess is in NoK there was that oleg guy, plus they were much more powerful and making for the throne of shadow

as for the rest, it's RAFO right now. Next book :(

Not really. If you have finish the main series plus the novellas plus whatever of both the prequel trilogies released till now....then you can look at B&KB books. I'm not a fan of them personally.

Thanks, I'll come back to them if I feel like it.

Mistborn Trilogy
The Kingskiller Chronicles
Gentleman Bastard

Let me put in another word for Gentleman Bastard. I started the first book, The Lies of Locke Lamora, only today, and so far it is brilliant.

I started The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson a week or so ago. Been struggling with it a bit thought to be honest. I'm just about 50% of the way through and still finding that i'm not quite hooked into the story. Hoping that if i give it a slight rest and come back to it, i'll find it picks up a bit.
