Books Fantasy Reads

Iirc, it was made known early on that regardless of the difference in strength, any of the Forsaken is far more powerful than the most powerful current Aes Sedai. Going by that logic, neither Elayne nor Egwene or Nynaeve should have any chance to triumph against them. Surviving the encounter, sure, beating them? Nah.
So are the three girls, especially Nyn.

Anyway, only Nyn beats a Foresaken in fair fight. Egwene beats one in dream world, and also M'Hael who is a new Foresaken, while Moiraine balefires one while he is concentrated in Rand.

Also I've just remembered she gets even weaker after being imprisoned.

Man, feck this book.
How on Earth you know that? It is explained only in the end of the penultimate book.

Btw, she is stronger than the current Moiraine while she has that powerful artifact.

You have to keep in mind that

a)Raw Power counts for a lot in WoT. It's repeatedly said that age counts for nothing in the White Tower and hierarchy is often the result of the relative strength in the power. If you can add a bit of knowledge to that then it really doesn't really matter if you've lived for a Millenia. When you add this to the fact that both Egwene and Neynaeve are thirsty for knowledge then really it makes complete sense. Which is why you see Elayne being outwitted easily unlike Nynaeve or Egwene.

b)Not all the Forsaken are very strong or even very good. The thirteen left behind are just that; the one's left behind. While some were among the strongest in any case (Demandred) even before the imprisonment others were pretty much all the Dark one had left (Asmodean). Their advantage is solely knowledge which starts to slowly go out of the window when Rand captures Asmodean.

c)The concept of Tavern.

Just finished Leviathan Wakes, thoroughly enjoyed it. Miller's bits were fantastic and I liked that neither him nor Holden were Mary Sue's, they both had their flaws. One is unhinged the other an idiot. Really enjoyed it and will be getting the rest of the series, but for now I need to get stuck into my back log and read The Force Awakens. I might finish Abercrombie's The Heroes first though. It's not grabbed me as much as The First Law series or Best Served Cold and I keep forgetting who people are.

That doesn't happen till like Book 13. How much have you read?

I've read the series before, on and off, a few times- albeit a long time a go. I've forgotten a lot of it though...well, most of it tbh. I read book 13 when it originally came out 4-5 yeas a go. I think at the time I'd convinced myself I'd already read the previous 12 and it would all come back to me, whereas I'd actually only read the previous 8-9.

That happened to me while reading Dresden Files, but I skipped just the one book and realised it at the very end.

Anyways, book 11 and 12 are really good and where you get to really see Darth Rand. The action also picks up significantly as you can feel the Last Battle is looming.

OK, coming back to Star Wars books, is there any order to read? That will be my next target after Ketty Jay.

Ignore the YA books, will chronological order work best? It's more to get better grip on whole universe and not just the popular movie/games books.

Links, suggestions?

My recommendation is to read up to book 7, then get a review of books 8-11, and then continue with the final three Sanderson books.

After book 7, read New Spring (Book 0) which focuses on Moiraine 20 years prior the Eye of the World.

Read mine and Sharky recommendations there.

Remember that they aren't canon anymore, so there is no guarantee consistency with the future movies.

I'm surprised that no one seems to have mention that we can have an Easter release for TWOW. All reports coming out pretty much confirm that the book is in the final phase.

5 years, fecking hell.

Unlikely. As far as I am aware, the book isn't yet in editing phase. And typically, the books need around 6-8 months from the moment they go into editing phase to publishing date.

Easter 2017 sounds more likely.

The Polish translator of the series confirmed that he's been booked by the end of 2015 to translate book 6. Spanish publication also said unless meteorite hits the book will be out 2016.

Now we know GRRM has also said that he wants the book out before GOT S6 premieres. The cover etc is already announced, and I would imagine if the book is ready for translation by end of 2015 it can be in print 2-3 months later.

It needs editing though. It is a very important process.

But considering how big it is (I would assume 15m+ copies will be sold), it can probably get ready significantly faster than the other books in the same genre.

I think a big part of the editing process can already be done by people closely involved in the writing process. Things like names, consistencies in relation to past volumes can be checked and corrected on a chapter-to-chapter basis. Of course, the overall volume needs a revision when it's done but a lot of time can be saved if there's a will for it.

I'm fairly certain the longest we'll have to wait is a September release like ADWD. However, still dreaming of that Easter release.

Started reading Stormlight Archive. Really looking forward to it, loved Mistborn so hopefully Sanderson does as well again!

Finished Ship of Destiny by Robin Hobb. It finishes quite neatly the story though I got a mixed view about Kennith
like the author realized he didn't seem that much an evil character and be even admired so then add rape so the readers know he is evil. I wasn't much a fan too of let's put another love for the jilted ones.

I read The Willful Princess and the Piebald Prince. I didn't really care about the characters. I will probably read The Tawny Man next year.

I started Green Rider by Kristen Britain. I am not impressed so far.

Can anyone recommend a good standalone fantasy book? I need a break from WoT but don't want to get invested in another series.

Ah I've read it! But top recommendation, it's fantastic. Huge Gaiman fan- he used to come and give readings at my university sometimes.
I ordered this book three months ago on amazon and had it shipped to my brother in US. He is coming home for vacations tonite and I hope he hasn't forgotten it back in US.

Have you read Guy Gavriel Kay? Tigana is highly rated.

Tales of the Ketty Jay #1 - Retribution Falls

Quite a nice light read. Story is about a misfit crew of the airship Ketty Jay. The crew members are not bad in traditional sense, but have done mistakes in life past that had terrible consequences. They are just trying to run away from all and from each other and don't mind death. In 1st book, they get sucked in a bigger plot which makes them a proper crew that start caring for each other. The 1st book is more of a plot setting with background to characters and establishing the world. Not particularly a strong story theme, but still interesting to read as the book progresses.

Also there are airships, dukes, pirates, evil religion, demons, golems and a cat.

I made a comment about Nemesis Games in A forum of Ice and Fire. Look who replied.

Ffs, that's amazing.

Can't read into that comment. Was it an acknowledgement or sarcasm?
I guess it is sarcasm. Still, is is great though. And well, I was right, there is no character development in books 3 and 4, not at all. In fact, we don't know more for the characters by the end of the fourth book than by the end of the first book.

Btw, that forum is absolutely fantastic. Probably the only forum that I would put on pair with Caf. The level of discussion is really high.

Saying that, I have made just 400 posts in a year there. And pretty much all of them are in Literature subforum (don't post much in ASOIAF/GoT subforums there).

Nice. 9 pages for just Nemesis Games. That's brilliant. Maybe I'll just sign up for fun too!

Yep, it has in depth discussions for pretty much any fantasy/sci-fi book. As bonus, it has Abercrombie (he replied once to me too), Lawrence, Abraham, Sanderson (in the past) among other writers. And there are many great posters there.

I have accounts on RAWK, Jedi Council Forums, Fantasy Fiction *, Dragonmount and there in addition to Caf, but that forum is the only one I rate that highly.

* It is the forum Raptori mentioned. Nice forum, but it has just a few posters, so the discussion goes very slowly.

Don't have time for that many. I'm on Fantasy Faction too, but rarely post there (and it's blocked at work, so sucks more). I wanted to try out the writing contest and will do so in Feb probably. Will try to get a crack at asoaif forum later today. Would be awesome to interact with authors directly!

Well, I didn't use Jedi Council for like a year until the movie come. I don't use RAWK anymore, and never used dragonmount (bar a week), so it isn't that I use all of them at the same time.

I generally log 5 minutes a day in FF, and a few more in asoiaf.

Just reading the top 5 fantasy series on there and someone mentioned the Rigante on page 1. So the forum gets a big thumbs up for that. Amazing series!

Tigana is very good if you haven't read it.

I have but I was actually really considering reading it again as it's been so long and it's fantastic. I opted for Talion: Revenant. I read good reviews, although it seems to be in first person which I've never been a huge fan of but it seems to have potential.
