Fake Quotes / Fake News

In this day and age we really must be extra vigilant when copying and pasting anything from twitter. I find it's best to automatically assume that anything written by unverified accounts is fake. Tbh I'm not sure why twitter is used as the main source for news. There are plenty of reputable news sites out there. The BBC being the most obvious.

The issue is also that the United fan pages like utdreport, man utd stuff etc then repost the quotes and then they spread all over Twitter as though they are true.

Sad that one Twitter account can send fake quotes so far around Twitter and without any credibility too.

Worrying. Look how easily people believed them. Imagine how this could be used to manipulate an orange toad into the whitehouse, or make a country vote to leave the EU... oh wait.

That guy definitely has an account on here.

What about intentional misquoting by actual journalists?

On the Melissa Reddy one, which started a proper meltdown:

It's been slightly manipulated. The Jose quote was in response to a question on whether the performance showed we needed reinforcements. They removed the part where he talks about our returning players and also a line in the middle that references the original question. This makes it look like his only point was to disparage the squad. And the Sanchez quote is him answering an entirely different question later in the conference, clubbing it with these quotes is a bit dishonest.

So it's been cut and paste a bit to strengthen the narrative.

On the Simon Stone one with Mourinho apparently wanting 5 players and obly getting one:wenger:

Simon Stone tweets this as if these are Mourinho’s words, but he slightly changes the words in the quotes and at the same time completely changes the meaning. When you read Simon Stones quotes, the tweet comes across as if Mourinho wanted 5 players for different positions but he will only be getting one.

What Mourinho actually said (the interview is on MUFC website), he wants 2 more players but it looks like he will only get 1. For that one, he gave a list to the club of 5 players a few months ago, and he is waiting to see if he gets one of those 5, if it’s possible.

Listen after 3:08.

I fully support modmins breaking out the banhammer to cut down on this nonsense. I just cant get my head around how sad you have to be to make up fake quotes like that and post them.

I fully understand it - keyboard warriors make up stuff to get attention, that’s 53.4% of the Internet.

It’s sad and pathetic, but so are lots of people.

The world jumps on a bandwagon far too easily these days - half the issue is that’s these tweets (or any fake news) re-affirm people’s views or perceptions. I.e in this case Jose has his favourites, doesn’t like Pereira. People don’t question things enough and their field of vision for news is often so narrow.

The other isssue is lazy journalism - too many news outlets quote/ copy/ post tweets from people as news or reaction to news. The MEN is getting worse at this by the day. I actually want to know what the journalist who is trained and paid to report thinks and what their analysis of the situation/ game/ incident is. I couldn’t care less what a load of keyboard warriors on Twitter think - if I did I’d go to Twitter.

Good thread highlighting the issue. Thank you.

Preach!

Damn. That notification with the account name at the top literally gave me a heart attack, thought I was getting banned or something.

Cheers.
Me too. At least I'm awake now

Thanks for the notification @Damien !

For what it’s worth, though there are a lot of drama queens on the caf that need to apply this critical thinking to EVERYTHING they see on the internet, not just the fake tweets regarding Man Utd.

Considering you asked me personally for the help, here it is.

Ignore tweets from people you don't recognize.

You're welcome.

Was the one about “these players won’t even be in the squad when we get back home” a fake too? That’s the most damaging I’ve seen so far, so I’d imagine (hope) that it’s not a real quote.

The wording in those tweets are all wrong anyway. They actually do sound made up. Jose doesn't speak like that.
My thoughts exactly. And if people would stop for a moment and check them properly half the crap wouldn’t be posted here. Instead people act like excitable dogs trying to post feeds before anyone else

Jesus there are a sad obsessed type of persons who would sell their mother to get rid of the Manager. You have the right to disagree, but this is OTT.

No, it wasn't but half of the players are still reserve team players so it's obvious they're not going to be in the squad.

It's not even that people are just quoting the fake quotes, it's that people actually try to discuss them and defend them saying shit like 'well maybe it was said in private that's why nobody else is quoting it' (hi Sparky) despite the account being some fecking @UTD_Daily_Stuff. There isn't anything you can do about people being absolute imbeciles.

Caf is a bit of a microcosm of current, global society and the cancer that's spreading throughout it at the moment is also spreading throughout, to an obviously lower scale, Caf. There's no stopping it.

I don’t do Twitter or Facebook or any other sort of ‘social media’ as they are all corrupt and in it for themselves. Social media will be the downfall of society as so many people actually believe what is written on it. Ask some ‘Oh Jeremy Corbyn’ Supporters what Labour policies are and I bet 95% haven’t a clue, they’ve just jumped onto a ‘trendy’ tweet.

Nobody loves to see lots of red words in the top corner suddenly.

Not going to lie, this shit is starting to piss me off as everyone is suddenly jumping on Jose for shit either not said or taken out of context and it's being posted everywhere as though it's fact.

Lots of guys believe those kinds of stuff cause they so hate the manager they believe what they want to believe.

This is how Donald trump became president

Exactly this.

As a result, I google a lot of quotes to see if they appear in other more reputable websites, or ideally if there's a video of the person saying the quote.

You cant take anything you see online at face value anymore, and it takes less than 2 seconds to google something for verification.

How about we have a whitelist of twitter accounts related to United stuff from which stuff can be posted here and the rest is a no go. There is too much stuff on twitter that just pure speculation or straight up made up shit like this.

Saw my name at the top and was ready to say.
"It wasn't me"!
