He was unreliable due to his injuries but when he did play he usually impressed so I am not sure how anyone with an ounce of common sense can say he's shit

That he didn't get chances because he 'might' get injured is a silly excuse. He might not. He deserved more chances. Hopefully he will do really well for Ole.

He certainly may have but from what I've seen of Moyes he probably looked at his record and felt it wasn't worth the bother, especially with his contract coming to an end.

I really like Fabio and felt he had loads of potential but I can recall too many matches where he went off injured, even one where he came on as a sub and went off injured a few minutes later.

He had about 10 good games for the club in 6 years, that too not in the position he was meant to be played in.

He's one of the most overrated players on here.

Still, best of luck to him and hopefully he can have a decent career.

This.

For all the people blaming Moyes for this, let's not forget that when Fergie was here he didn't get much of a chance either.

He's a lovely lad but I don't think he's good enough.

I wouldn't say he impressed. He wasn't bad, but he wasn't great as well. Average often means something worse than expected, but he was just average in its true meaning.

He was written off for something other than his ability - whether that's injuries or that he's not left footed we can only speculate. Lots of injury prone players have a run where they overcome their injuries and play full seasons though, (last season for Rafael being an example) and it wasn't as though anyone is arguing he should be first choice.

It's a shame but like I said I just hope he does well.

Disagree. He generally impressed me when he played and was very good when he was the first choice RB towards the back end of 10/11 season and had a good CL final to finish the season of. There's really no grounds to call him shit.

Not too sure how he's overrated either. No one's saying he's brilliant, what most people on this thread wanted was for him to be given a chance and even that as a back up to both the full back positions and he wasn't. Hope he does very well at Cardiff and gets a bigger move.

When fully fit He was given a chance by Fergie in the most important part of our season, including a champions league final, that can't qualify as not getting much of a chance and was sent on loan last season to spend a season getting first team football so that he could be in the squad this season. He is just unfortunate Fergie retired to be honest...

Never has playing in a UCL final been so built up.

I guess we really missed a trick by not signing Djimi Traore.

Playing in one, when players with more experience are not used in your place counts for something.

We've done one better and keep rewarding game after game to a Valencia in rotten form...

It's a shame he didn't get the same chances thst Rafael did from the start. It seems like we were too focused on Evra being in the way of Fabio that we missed the glaringly obvious solution of allowing him and rafael to fight for that RB slot and allow them both to develop.

Hopefully he can start to build a career for himself now.

Harry didn't always fancy him either for QPR

He only got that position because people were injured, and he had a good run. I love Fabio, but he wasn't getting a chance under Fergie either. Blaming Moyes is just bullshit.

He obviously wasn't going to get a proper chance here (rightly or wrongly) so there was no point in keeping him really. Hopefully Solskjaer gets the best out of him.

Should have sold Buttner and had Fabio as back up. He could have covered for his brother as well.

Exactly.

After that run in the side SAF went out and bought in Smalling and Jones and picked them ahead of Fabio at RB - so the idea that SAF rated him more than Moyes is blinkered in the extreme.

Unless you want Fergie or Buttner to be blamed for Moyes picking a clearly worse player over Fabio, your attempted defence of him is hapless.

It's weird that people forget who actually signed Buttner and loaned Fabio out.

Saf didn't deem Fabio good enough to be Evras understudy so why should Moyes?

Fergie stated he sent him on loan at the start of last season for him to get a run of first team football after an injury plague year in order to bring him back as Evra's long term cover/competition. The idea that SAF allegedly didn't rate him as Evra's cover is pure revisionism Buttner was only bought because Fabio going on loan was leaving us a hole in the squad for which signing another young fullback for wasnt an awful idea given Evra's age.

No, the point was Fergie did the same thing. Fabio only got a run when there was an injury. Fabio hasn't been good enough. Neither is Buttner, but that's a different argument.

He hasn't even had that this season tbf so it isn't the same thing. Even when Rafa was injured. I don't really think anyone was calling for him to be first choice either, just first choice back up when Rafa/Evra are rested/injured.

Fabio was always injured and Evra was ever present at LB while the competition at RB was much better. That's why he only got a run when everyone was injured. Then when he got that run he got injured again next season and Smalling and Jones impressed while he returned to being unreliable. We loaned him out and brought Buttner in and then this season happened.

Shocking that he was used behind Buttner, but that's football. It's Moyes' team.

I really hope he does well, don't have a bad word to say about him. He had some great moments, especially his goal against Arsenal in the cup at Old Trafford.

Fabio was good in one or two games he played for us but it was so long ago and he's not played/been injured that I can't even remember what it was. May have been the Arsenal game where we played 352 or whatever and out foxed them. Certainly Rafael played that game anyway.

He's better than Buttner in terms of football technique but he's less direct, slower and more rash (just like his bro) and we know Moyes loves DIRECT. Buttner whacks in a great left footed cross and isn't Fabio an Irwin style footer LB..

let say, just let say he did very well at cardiff, and in a few years time suddenly he has just 1 year left in his contract and could be available for a knock down price. do you think he will choose united and moyes(granted he is still in charge of united) over some other big clubs if we come back for him?

not sure whether moyes will be a strong point but the club, the fans and his twin bro could be factors he would return to united.

anyway best of luck fabio. hope he can fulfill his potential there. would be nice if he can prove himself in the premiers league as well.

I'd have rather Buttner be loaned out, but I guess seeing as Evra is first choice for now and you can't have someone who gets injured so much as back-up, he had to be the one to go.

No, the point was Fergie did the same thing..
He most certainly did not. Fergie did not have Fabio fit for extended period of time and total refuse to use him at all. Let's not forget Fergie is the same manager who beat up on Arsenal in the FA Cup with Fabio as a left winger. The notion that he did think anything fo the ald as Moyes does is laughable

Fabio only got a run when there was an injury. Fabio hasn't been good enough. Neither is Buttner, but that's a different argument.
It really isn't. Fabio is simply better than Buttner so had no business being overlooked for the Dutch man. Whether Fabio was good enough to be first choice is frankly irrelevant to that matter.

Sad to see him go without getting a proper shot.

Buttner at the club and him leaving is a bit of a joke.
