Fabinho

Twitter thread has mentioned Matic a few times now. Will be so disappointed if we get Matic instead of Fabinho. Matic hasn't been the same since the title winning season imo.

Agreed. Can only assume they'd go for Matic if he was cheaper. Same with Morata. Mbappe+Griezmann should be the only option for the attack, and Fabinho should be a good choice for midfield.

I've not watched much of Fabinho but on some of the videos he seems awfully one footed in some key defensive areas to the point where he tackles from angles. Do you think that it might be a problem or not really an issue?

Lewandowski+Griezmann at least aim high.....

Can't see the resemblance. Mbappe is an 18-years old who scored 6 goals in 6 CL play-off games, including the goal against the currently best defence in the world. Belloti, however good his season was, did it in a relatively underwhelming Serie A and is 23-years old, with this season being the first of notice. He definitely does not have the same reputation (not discussing his actual level) that will make him feared by default.

Okay mate.

I didn't plan this to turn into a debate about Belloti's quality or how he is perceived. Just thought that once an attacker is coming off a very good season, opponents tend to be nervy when facing him in a new season, at least until the guy proves otherwise. I'm sure opponents felt like that when faced with Martial early last season until they probably noticed he had lost his bite.

He can still play in the academy and keep developing
That would be a waste of time, the guy spent at least half the season with the first team. After they know the drill, but they aren't ready to be an option, they should get a loan run elsewhere, that's my view.

Same as Valencia then, which isn't a problem really.

Matic will be a really good option. In fact, he is a better player than Fabinho in a DM role if you ask me. Apart from last seasons dip in form, he has been fantastic in the last 4/5 seasons. You get the feeling he will explode again under Jose.

But Valencia doesn't play centrally. TBH I haven't watched him much but especially in videos his defensive game on the left is a little weak. He is still relatively young though in a new position.

He reminds me a lot of Patrick Vieira (as mentioned by others in this thread).

He has a similar build, running style, seems just as assured, tackles well, moves well with the ball, is composed. He even has a *ahem* similar hairstyle.

He will be the next long-term captain of this club .

Sign him up

The idea of this signing is really growing on me ... but all the sources linking him to us seem complete BS

I just find this hard to believe, why would Barca chase him when there are far better players out there? If we sign a midfielder, Herrera will struggle to get a game for us.
Because he's just had a fantastic season in an underperforming team that still managed two trophies.... his stats show just how good he has been, stats wise he trumps Kante in every department! Which sounds ridiculous i know but i dont think people realise just how good he's been this season for us and he LOVES united.

I'm glad he's staying once we have a complete midfield trio people might start to appreciate him more.

I think DiMarzio has said for a while he is one of our targets, but also that Juve are after him too

If we sign Fabinho along with Griezmann then I am pretty sure our preferred formation for most games would be 4231, Herrera would used as first sub for our midfield and as back up for both Pogba and Fabinho he won't be a starter for sure unless Fabinho struggles to establish himself as first choice.

If we go for 4-2-3-1, obviously Fabinho is a better choice alongside Pogba. I still think we'll go with 4-3-x, where for now, Herrera is the only choice as B2B.

Yeh. Griezmann position will be an interesting debate. Mou's Inter had Eto'o as wing striker, which is I think where Griezmann will be. (Note: Valencia is almost the carbon copy of Maicon. And it explain our interest in Perisic). So there's enough position to fit in Fabinho and Herrera.

It's that gangly unorthodox running style that reminds us of Viera so much. Of course in terms of ability the 2 are worlds apart.

And his love for accurate long pass, which reminds me of Vieira to Henry route.

So you'd play Fabinho as DM, Herrera as CM and Pogba in AC with Perisic and Griezmann on either side of him?

I don't think that's getting the best out of those players is it? I wouldn't play Pogba as a number 10 and I think Griezmann is better as a second striker. Time will tell I guess.

I'll take your word for it. I know very little about French football in general, so my judgement on this guy comes from the various comments in this thread + the obligatory compilation video. On that basis alone he appears to be the next Messi/Ronaldo/Pele so yeah, I'm all for signing him.

Get it done Ed!

The formation can transform during the game to 4-3-1-2. Although I agreed that wouldn't be the most ideal position for Griezmann.

Pogba doesn't have to be a pure no. 10, but can be similar to Modric at Madrid: a more advance playmaker with defensive duty.

This really looks like what Mou is trying to do.

:D More like, the next Rijkaard/Desailly.

Far better players like who?(who don't come from the world best teams)

They already have atleast 3 better midfielders on the books in Rakitic, Mascherano and Busquets without bringing any other players into the equation. But if you want me to I can tell you better midfielders. Alli, Dembele, Weigl, Fabinho of the top of my head and there are quite a few more not in really top elite teams.

Still thinking you're all putting too much thought into it, when 4-4-2 allows Griezmann to play in his best position. The real question is: three man or two man midfield. My guess is two, since Mourinho already tried it last season and we need an extra area man.

He Doesn't look like 23 , more like 28-29 already. He could be promising for years to come.

Wtf? I think you seriously underestimate him

Say we do replicate this and Griezmann is the wing-striker, who would be our #10?

Don't bother. Herrera fan boys cannot be reasoned with. Good player, but absolutely shapeless in his timing, composure and reading of the game. Good squad player, but nowhere near a starter for a team with designs on dominating the Champions League in the next 2 to 3 years. Doubtless some teenager will post a 'whoscored' link.

A midfield trio Fabinho, Hererra and Pogba would just be scary for opposition. Physically very imposing whilst being able to play football to a very good level.
