FA Youth Cup: Burnley vs. United

Just saw the gif of Wilson's goal. Awesome... How quickly he reached opposition penalty area!! Lightening speed and maintaining composure and control while doing it, finishing with a cool strike. This lad can be in senior team in couple of years time latest.

Poor performance by United lit up by 2 moments of quality by Pereira and Wilson. Very good performance by Joel Pereira in goals as well

Mediocre performance but we've got quite a few players capable of a bit of magic this season and two of them came through for us in the end.

Saidy is an absolute rocket down the right flank.

Perhaps, but there was something Blackettesque about how he let Frost run in behind him time and time again.

probably Saidy's worst performance tonight not helped by the two CB's. Have to feel sorry for Burnley they played far better on the night; undone by class twice.

Any footage of the first goal yet?
Wilson is special. He'll go on the tour in the summer, won't he?

The Andreas Pereira goal just gets better every time you see it. The Wilson goal is the perfect goal. He was competing for the ball and got lucky. Most players (certainly ours) would play it back but he attacked the space and not only did he have the composure at the end but he finished it the way he wanted to. Every touch is perfect.

He's devastatingly direct - heads for goal at every opportunity - but he's also got maturity and composure - knows what's going on around him and makes correct decisions.

It's probably too early but I'd love to see him get a run on the wing for the seniors.

anyone else who was really impressed with Burnley's Jamie Frost ? He could have scored 3 or 4 - and he constantly found himself in good positions. And he just turned 17 about 2 months ago so he looks a real prospect.

There were two or three of their players that looked really good. That lad that came on up front at the end looked a bit of a player as well.

Manchester United’s Under-18s progressed to the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup after a hard-fought 2-0 win away to Burnley.

Coming courtesy of two fine individual strikes from Andreas Pereira and James Wilson, the win avenged last season’s third round defeat to Burnley at Old Trafford.

In a tight affair at Turf Moor it was the home side who took the early initiative, looking to utilise the pace of wingers Callum Jackson and Christian Hill. Having won an early corner, Kevin Ly lofted a ball towards former United youth player Luke Daly whose half-volleyed effort was cleared off the line by Sean Goss.

With Burnley continuing to look bright, United, clad in all white, struggled to fashion any penetrative forays into the opposition half. However, one positive for the Reds was that the defensive rear-guard, marshalled by McConnell and Evans, stood firm against the Clarets allowing United to gain more of a foothold into the game as the half drew on.

James Wilson looked as lively as ever up front and tried repeatedly to get in behind the Burnley back four, but United’s midfield trio of Goss, Willock and Harrop found it difficult to create any real opportunities of note.

The best chance of the half fell to Burnley after more great work down the right-hand side. Jackson teed up Cameron Dummigan whose cross found Khius Metz, but the forward could only fire over.

As the early stages of the second half unfolded, Burnley continued to pose the greater threat and Jamie Frost should have done better when he shot wide after excellent play from Dummigan.

It seemed a moment of magic may be required to break the deadlock and that duly arrived just before the hour mark. Saidy Janko received the ball on the right and played a simple pass to Andreas Pereira who found himself a yard of space and unleashed a stunning drive into the top corner.

Things got even better for the Reds on 72 minutes thanks to another superb effort. Having collected the ball from a throw-in inside his own half, Wilson battled past a crowd of Burnley defenders as he embarked on a run oozing pace and power. Leaving defenders trailing in his wake, Wilson reached the area before rounding the goalkeeper and calmly slotting home.

The home side were not about to give up though and were thankful for Evans' excellent defending after Frost found himself clean through on goal thanks to Burnley substitute Ntumba Massanka's defence-splitting pass. Despite a flurry of late corners and a great save from Joel Pereira, United held out and will now face either Leicester City or Rotherham United in the fourth round.

United: Pereira; Janko, Evans, McConnell, Barber; Willock, Goss, Harrop, Pereira; Redmond (Fletcher 65), Wilson. Subs not used: Henderson, Mitchell, Borthwick-Jackson, Rashford.

Wilson and Pereira are studs, I think they'll end up as first team quality players, hopefully for us.

I agree. Pereira still has some ironing out to do in his game (which of course is fine for a kid!) but every now and then he'll produce something that reminds you of his potential. Next year he'll be really special. There was a point in the first half where the ball was loose and he picked it up and rouletted past a couple of players. Was brilliant. And a great piece of play and pass to put Wilson through but he was just offside. That said, he'll often knock a 5 yard pass straight out of touch too.

Janko will go far too I think. It will be an interesting battle between him and Varela in the next couple of years. Can see Janko as a Micah Richards sort of right back. An absolute steam train.
