F1 2020 Season

Renault are not convinced the Racing Point cars, or at least the design of some of the components, are not within the rules.

This translates to Renault suggesting Racing Point are using a design which features elements that have not been designed themselves, as per the regulations

Max and Lando are the two most talented young drivers on track, LeClerc is some way behind them.

Obviously it's about finding the right team at the right time as to who will win a title first.

Nah Leclerc is fast than Norris I reckon.

Some way behind them? He is a driving a car that is pretty shit and yet managed to come fourth in his first season with a big team and came 2nd in the first race. He isnt way behind them talent wise.

For me personally - Max > Russell > Leclerc > Norris.

Close between Russell & Leclerc.

They look very similar dont they...

though as the article says it will probably be if the internal chambers are identical that will determine certain guilt as there is realistically no other way they can have copied that
If there is any guilt somewhere-hopefully FIA won't hush hush it like they did with the Ferrari thing. ..

Come to think of it though-I know Toto explained that due to Covid they didn't join the case by some of the other teams to get the result of the Ferrari study but the conspiracy theorist could now think that just maybe its because Merc knew it had its own skeletons in the closet.

Great Battle for the midfield yesterday. Hamilton is a cut above the rest.

I find it pretty interesting that max was able to pull off the same move around Bottas on the outside that Albon tried with Hamilton with Bottas finding the ability to not make the Mercedes shunt Max off the track. Almost like last weeks collision with Albon was more than a racing incident

Except it was less "Bottas finding the ability to not make the Mercedes shunt Max off the track" and more Verstappen stayed extremely wide throughout the corner and stayed on the outside kerbs so there was no risk to him.

Verstappen>Leclerc>>Norris>Russell

Norris has improved this year. Waiting for Russell to have a teammate with two working hands.

It's difficult to assess where a driver is when the machinery is so up and down each year. At the moment Verstappen is miles ahead of his teammate and has performed super consistently each year so you'd have to have him at the top.

The other three are more tricky to judge for me. Leclerc showed great early promise and last season put in some excellent quali/race drives but overall was probably 'good'. This year he's made an awful mistake and looked fairly underwhelming albeit in a poor car. Norris last season was above average, some nice performances and steady but also some mistakes here and there which is fair as a rookie. This year he's taking full advantage of the Mclaren and capitalising on other peoples mistakes which is a great trait to have. Russell last year was pretty impossible to judge as his car was wank but he did outperform Kubica in every race bar 2 (one of which Kubica actually got a point). Same problem this year where his car is rubbish but he's done a good job in quali so far.

Norris at the moment is in the best position of those three this season (Not sure if he's more talented but).

 wow

Russell is very good, If he swapped places with Bottas now he'd give Hamilton more trouble IMO. Can see this even happening pretty soon.

Would have liked to see Russell get that seat but can understand that there is little incentive. Bottas is pretty much the perfect number 2 driver for Mercedes.

Yeah, Bottas doesn't complain and does a reliably good enough job. It's also great for Bottas. Where would he go and get more success? As long as Mercedes is obviously way ahead of everyone else, and Hamilton is clearly the better driver, Bottas's current position is as good as it will get for him.

I wonder how good Bottas really is though. He is consistently a top 3 driver now, but where does he rank in terms of skill/talent? That goes back to the earlier discussion about team vs. individual quality.

I wonder if lewis does not sign if vettel would wait for a year to get a drive there?

Lewis ain't walking away for a few years yet, I think he will motivate himself massively to win again with new regulations in 2022.

The way Mercedes are able to improve every year is impressive, Ferrari are a mess but they manage to keep Red Bull and Honda just far enough out of reach.

You wouldn't bet against them coming into 2022 with the best package (same engines in use).

Absolute domination to the point another team traces last years car and beats most of the grid.

I'd rank him around the same as someone like Perez so above average. With Williams he comfortably beat Massa each year and managed a few podiums where he could. And at Mercedes, while he's clearly second best to Hamilton, he doesn't usually end up so far back he can't assist with strategy like Albon in that last race or Gasly last year.

I don't know, Pscholes18 , does have a point, with the short season and Mercedes closest challengers being McLaren, it is hard to see past Mercedes for both.
true, but my point was more that it's not a foregone conclusion it's Hamilton that has won, which is what they were assuming. Bottas might have something to say about it still even though Lewis does look dominant...which as a brit is great to see and McLaren back in the hunt i'm starting to enjoy FI again bit like United finally!!!!!

Its still kinda nuts to think Verstappen was running 35+ or so sec ahead of Albon and would have finished with that huge of a gap too if he hadn't pitted for that minor front wing damage at the end...and even then still finished way ahead.
Definitely would have been nice for RB if they could have pressured Bottas.

Who got fastest lap in the end? They figured Verstappen pitted so he could have a go at that, but I haven't seen who got it...?

Oh, actually, I see it was Sainz in lap 68.

Will they have merc engines (and brake ducts) next season as well (racing point are rebranding as Aston right)
Yes and Yes.

Nothing changes next year, so they will still have their "Pink Mercedes" but in British racing green.

Smart move by Lawrence Stroll really, they'll get a lot more attention as Aston Martin than Copy Point.

His dad ain't dropping his Son, Perez will be paid off presumably if that happens.

Replace Stroll? Or they buy out Perez's contract?

Rumour has it that there is a clause in Perez's contract which will help an easier exit. I could see him going to Haas next season and replacing Grosjean.

Would make sense to have a Mexican driver with Haas given their market and what I assume is the deeper pockets of Perez' sponsors.

Can totally see Perez at Haas but I'm not sure how much longer Haas are going to stick at it.
