oh right. the same barca that was up for the Cl, didn't give a fcuk about the wortless euro leftover trophy..
the PL and Cl is where its at.. the big boys league.

Any team with serious European Cup (CL) ambitions must ignore the Worthington Cup, because to win it and the FA Cup and the PL and the CL is just not possible. Too many games, full stop. That's why Liverpool couldn't give a shit if they won it this year, and United always treat it as a training ground.
Name another European country that has to go through the bollocks of two domestic cup competitions. It's the league cup and should stay as such - a cup for the teams in the football league, not the PL teams as it is a waste of time and resources! It's like that World Club Cup thing - a waste of time. It was a disgrace that we didn't play in the FAC to go and try for that piece of shit!

Why did we play a decent side in it then?
Why did all the players look so gutted when we lost?
We don't share your disdain for the wortington cup, accept it.

I do accept it, but the title of the thread asked for explanaition, which is what I've tried to do without being silly or abusive like some of the other so-called football fans in this forum

Bollocks. So why then is THE double not the Premiership and the CL? By this logic the premiership and FA cup is only A double, surely? THE treble is only named as such because that's the name YOU gave it when you won it. In which case, we'll claim THE Cup Treble (two of yours were leagues) and THE Double Treble. 'Cos we did them first. Sound fair?

The first thing any club tries to win is:
a) Their domestic league (can't have a treble without a league - OK!)
b) Their domestic cup (especially in England as the FAC is so prestigious)
This makes the double. After that, the next highest cup a club can try to win is:
c) The top competition in their continent (in our case the CL)
This makes THE treble, as any of the following are simply domestic trebles or second rate trebles as they consist of three cups that are not all the most prestigious that can be won:
Premier League
FA Cup
League Cup
Premier League
League Cup
UEFA Cup
FA Cup
League Cup
UEFA Cup
Premier League
FA CUP
UEFA Cup
Only the following is THE Treble (THE because it is the highest that can be achieved):
Premier League
FA Cup
Champions League (European Cup)
You simply can't get any better than that, and adding the League Cup, European Super Cup, World Club Cup, Intercontinental Cup (Wow United have won something Liverpool never have), and Charity Shield is simply a bonus. Period!

That's my point. Surely the league and fa cup then is 'just a domestic double'. The two most prestigious trophies are the league and CL therefore they should be THE double. I think not. It's a history thing. THE double is historically the league and FA cup because that was the first double it was ever possible to win. In which case, IF (and I don't know the answer) the League cup has been around longer than the European Cup (as far as English clubs were involved) then the REAL treble must be League+FA+League Cup, n'est pa? QED

As the pioner Man United has always been, we were the first English club to take part in the European Cup, in 1956. The League Cup started in the early 60's (in 1963 if I'm not too wrong), with Aston Villa winning it.
