we are not going to get a Rio/Vidic combination. It probably was a fluke and a one off. So it is better to get a better keeper than DeGea and that is going to help the defence. A keeper who can command and organise his box.

The quality of that partnership of course is very hard to match. A centre back the quality of Ferdinand is very hard to find, only Stam in my lifetime was of a similar level to him for our club in his shirt time here. Vidic was the perfect foil. He wouldnt have been lauded so highly without Ferdinand beside him though and to a lesser extent vice cersa.

Disagree with the "fluke and one off, forget that and get a better keeper" sentiment though. Our three great sides have all been built around a good spine, starting in defence. Yes, with the keeper but we do have Romero and we do have Henderson. What keeper can we sign that hugely improves on this (even with DeGeas form) without spending a fortune? But my main point is, those three great sides Pallister and Bruce, Stam and Johnsen, Ferdinand and Vidic. All good partnerships that complimented each others games well, we simply dont have that at all at the moment, not with the players that are not injured anyway. For me a quality centre back is a priority. The fact with reports we seem to be looking ideally for a left footed centre back, with pace so Maguire can move over to th eright, suggests the club maybe thinks that too

Some of Vidic's best games came without Rio playing next to him. There was a ludicrous run where he played with Evans I seem to remember where nobody could get past him. I love Rio and I'm probably biased towards him but Vidic was a fabulous centre back in his own right. All 3 of them that you mention were greats IMO.

Its really a golden opportunity to get a world class defender for a reasonable fee and without fighting the selling club for him!

conte owes us anyways

I'd send Smalling the other way if he wanted a replacement. He's already familiar with a back 3 under LVG.
I second your thought.
