European Super League 2.0 | Unify League

Almost a year to the day since the last put forward a new proposal.

https://www.skysports.com/football/...motion-relegation-and-league-system-will-work

Almost like the CEO is doing the annual push for his Christmas bonus.

So it’s basically just a revamp of the current champs league, only A22 management and Madrid want a larger cut of the profits? Yeah, I’m sure UEFA will go for that.

Basically a guy who lived in Madrid has setup a company in association with Madrid & other clubs (Barcelona, Juve, etc) with the sole purpose of creating a European Super League where the biggest benefactors will be A22 & the owners of A22 which includes Real Madrid.

I think it’s rather naive to believe this will actually be the case. The second this thing would be established, they would start to make money from subscriptions.
I hear you. We need a regulator for football prices pronto.

People keep repeating this but how exactly does the new format hurt smaller clubs? If anything it let's more smaller clubs qualify for playoffs.

I really like the new format. Trying to get into top 8 to skip the next round keeps it interesting and as you say, smaller clubs have a much better chance of progressing to the knockouts now.

So what is the mechanism that gives Perez/Real hundreds of millions every year until the end of time for being the prettiest club in the world this time?

More elite version of the CL? Will cause massive ructions, it might be legal but I still don't see how it can happen.

Doesn't sound too bad if you're into that kind of thing, the devil's in the details which are a little scarce from what I can see.

The thing is, it doesn't sound that different from what we have in this season's European compeition which makes it a bit redundant.

If a team finishes 9th-24th in this seasons big group thingy they're playing 7 group matches, the knockout playoff round, last 16, last 8, 4 and final if they go all the way. 17 matches. It's 15 matches for a team in the top 8.

In this Unify one the path to the final is everyone playing 18 to win it, guaranteed 8 matches instead of 7 for those who go out in the group. Not much change really.

Can't really say I'm into European competition too much these days personally. I don't really watch any of the games apart from United and this wouldn't change that. I find it stale, the same teams in it a lot of the time at this weird juxtopostion point where it's no longer special or exciting but that at the same time there's no real ingrained culture of rivalry between clubs and fans. Don't see that changing with this at the top level. At one time there was a real mystery about playing certain teams, you'd discover new players but they're all on the telly anyway every week now and if one wanted to we can watch La Liga, Serie A etc. It's nothing unique to see Real Madrid, Juve, Bayern etc.

While I haven't been watching, I find the Conference League interesting for this season more than anything. Been checking the results of that one because I think it's cool to see some fo these small teams doing well and having the chance to qualify for knockout rounds etc. That's one thing I like about the new UEFA format and I guess we'd have that with this too.

Back to the devil's in the detail point, they're saying this one would be an open competition with qualification based on league performances. They said similar last time they re-jigged the proposal, but kind of buried the detail that it wasn't really. There was promotion/relegation in it, a bit like the Nations League now and the only way you could drop out altogether was to be relegated from the bottom tier. It looks like they've abandoned that too for this one but they haven't revealed the exact proposed qualification process from what I can see. Might still be there to a degree.

Think it would be a risk for clubs to sign up to this one as like I said it's not too different from what we have this season and they'd have to have assurances on the finances and whatnot, to be sure that any promised extra money was actually going to be there. If it's all free to air on this app thingy they're proposing then I don't know how that would affect TV revenue. Insnstinctively would think it would be down so where are they getting money from?

On the plus side for smaller clubs, they have more guaranteed matches to earn TV money but on the downside, there are no groups of death anymore so the chance of a big club exiting the tournament early is much smaller. That was the primary interest of big clubs from the beginning: Guaranteed ko stages to have more plannability in terms of TV money. In the long run, this will likely increase the gap between them and the runner ups even further and likely lead to top clubs maintaining even bigger squads and hoarding even more top players. Especially if the club WC turns out a success (hopefully not)
