Improving our squad and giving us actual competition for places is seen as unnecessary upheaval?! What is this crap. It's not only our team that is miles behind City, our fans approach is miles behind too. We need much more depth than we've got.

I'd rather go full BS and say that Lionel Messi has signed for us and Barca aren't really denying it. That'll get some clicks.
How will the team ever improve if only squad players are signed? Surely it makes sense to buy players who are either better than the players already at the club, or are showing real promise with potential to become one of the best? A squad player in this team is a mid-table quality player. Utd need to be aiming higher than that!

I think some people care more about their individual darling players being challenged than they care about us improving as a team. If the player is good enough, available, willing to come and would improve us then we should absolutely be signing them. We do have positions that need urgent attention, but that doesn't mean we should be ignoring chances to improve in other positions too.
Definitely agree that there are other positions that need improving as a priority, but sometimes a player comes along that is too good to pass on. I like Martial as a player, and I think he can be a fantastic player if he knuckles down, finds some real consistency and improves on his injuries. If he sulks and kicks up a stink because another striker comes in though, doesn't matter how good a player he is, for me he isn't the right fit for Utd. A true top top player doesn't feel threatened by new arrivals, they up their game and fight to become the very best they can be so they keep hold of that spot in the team. He'd still get his fair share of games anyways.
In fairness to Martial though I have no idea what his mentality is like, for all I know I'm being a little unfair to him and he is totally up for the challenge and not phased one bit.

Having competetion is all well and good. Under Fergie - when we were seriously challenging on four fronts - that competition was healthy. Everybody who deserved it was able to get a decent number of minutes.
The problem is that adding Haaland and Sancho to this team won't complete it to the extent where we'll be playing 60-odd top tier matches per season. The squad would become too top heavy, with the lack of midfield options keeping it a level below City/Liverpool. We'd be lucky to get around 50 or less matches, which won't be enough to keep everyone happy.
We either buy 1 attacker on his own, or we buy 4 players at once* and trust them to integrate quickly enough to earn the club extra fixtures. I don't see how buying 2 attackers alone is going to lead to a winning formula that's sufficient to maintain squad harmony.
*with a handful leaving

The links to Sancho are as strong as the ones to Haaland. If we're in for both, it won't work. Even if we're in for only Haaland, the broader point still stands. We'll probably still need reinforcements elsewhere to ensure that there are enough games in the schedule to justify such a large number of options in a single position.
Sure there were quotes saying he only wants to go to a top 4 side when you were after him during the last transfer window and thats why he isn't here. Towards the end of last season it looked a dead cert he was coming until they failed to get top 4.

I agree improving the first team is a priority and most certainly midfield. Depends who is available though. If the right player isn't available and both Sancho and Haaland are getable, why not got both? You don't need to catch Liverpool or City straight away, thats a few transfer windows down the line , the objective right now is to get 4th, which is still a possibility this season. Sancho and Haaland (providing they both can live up to their potential) are the types of players that will most certainly be needed to challenge for the title in a couple of years time. It'd be silly not to get them if they are available and willing to come.

Little ammendment to my previous post. HE didnt say it, but the papertalk said he wasn't moving unless it was top 4. But lets just imagine he is actually wanting to come to Utd, at end of the day none of us has any real idea whats going on we are all just speculating....but if he wasnt bothered about not going to a top 4 team, surely he'd be here right now after all the talk of him coming last season?

Right. And if Martial get injured again, what then? Did you forget how truly awful we looked in attack while he was out? And even assuming he manages to stay fit the entire season, he cant possibly play every league and cup game
This isn't some muppet frenzy: Haaland looks like the real deal and and considering we only have 4 attackers sharing 3 spots we're not exactly overstocked on attackers.
To be honest a young striker like Haaland isn't exactly what we need and would be low on our priority list. But these days these kind of players like Haaland Mbappe Felix Bernardo Silva De Jong De Ligt Jovic Dembele Havertz etc rarely want to come to us. We no longer have that much of a pulling power compared to other top teams. Our European rivals have been racking up these kind of players ever since Ferguson left and we have just been watching them do it.
So if a player like this wants to come to us(because of the Ole connection) then sign him up as quickly as possible. Unless he wants to go to developing clubs like Leipzig I wouldn't stand the sight of him banging in goals if he goes to other European clubs like Juve or Barca when we could have had him.

I like the way we are doing things buying young embedding the players into the united culture building loyalty. Not everyone can be pep and transform a teams mentality and ok field behaviours.
Going for this guy would be wrong unless he’s mbappe levels. Youth is great but we need balance of proven quality too and we have enough youth

This is the key. It seems we have a slight advantage at the moment as he has said publicly that he liked working with Ole as a coach. Admittedly it was when he was 17 but we need to take any advantage we can. He’s also Norwegian. If we sack Ole we have no chance imho. So let’s use the advantage whilst we can.
You are probably right about a young striker not being high on a list of priorities, but as you say, if he want's to come to OT to carry on his development under Ole, then we should sign him. Don't think he will be as prolific in the English game, but he will soon learn, and would get some games, but would be mostly on the bench the rest of this season if he came now, but I would understand if he signed in January, but stayed at Salzburg for the rest of the season, in that case we could possibly sign Mandzukic.

Quite a few of us have mentioned Martial's tendancy to pick up injuries, myself included. I don't bother with stats unless its goals, but he does seem to be injured a little bit too much. Do the stats back this up? I might be wrong, but I reckon even if Haaland came "to sit on the bench" He'd still get as many games maybe more than Martial due to rotation and filling in when Martial inevitably misses games.
We had 4 top strikers when Fergie was here. Always good to have cover. We should think about midfield also.

One injury to Rashford or Martial and we're up shit creek again. We clearly need another player who can pitch in with goals and I don't mean a sub standard old striker who can bang in the occasional goal. I'm talking about a player who will provide a consistent goal threat.
Undoubtedly he would get games, but they would be selected for him, probably when the coaching staff feel that Martial may need a rest, but also for cup matches (I know he would be ineligible for the Europa League). Generally you won't see the best from any player who signs in January, until the following season.
