Erik Ten Hag appreciation thread

Fergie would not have lasted in this era. He would have been sacked before he had his success. Plenty of fans were calling for him to be sacked.
Yeah it reminds me of that guy in 1989 with the sign saying "3 years of excuses later and it's still crap.... TA RA FERGIE"

I find it amusing that some doomsayers are coming into a positive talk thread to pull the ones who dare to be thankful back into the gloomy shadow's where they reside. This whole forum is ridden with them and unfortunately they account for the majority on here. Like a few have said, if you have nothing nice to say then just simply move on with your life instead of trying to bring others down into your misery regarding the club.

As for my opinion, I hate the man and he was shi... :D Only joking, There were quite a few positives for me that I won't forget quickly, namely the cup wins but I was also impressed with how he handled the Sancho and Ronaldo situations. I think maybe his downfall was his stubbornness in the end. The team genuinely looked like it had turned a corner at times but it just wasn't to be in the end. I genuinely wish him the best of luck where ever he ends up! Now we move forward and hopefully progress and get back to where we belong!

ETH in a way did the same to Ajax as he did to United. After a long period of drought in prices he brought back silverware to both clubs. More importantly, he made both United and Ajax fans feel proud to be fans of those clubs. Ajax maybe a little more than United fans but you must like your milk really sour if you didn't feel top of the world after that FA cup win.

Remember him that way.

Thank you Erik.

The FA Cup win was a great day for all of us, but most club supporters knew ETH wasn't the right man for United going forward. He can point to mitigating circumstances, but the reality is that managing United is one of the hardest sporting jobs on the planet -- no less so than being manager of Real or Barcelona -- and he just wasn't up to the task.

The better question to ask, for those who still stand by ETH, is whether anyone on the planet has the managerial nous to bring United back to perennial PL and CL contention. It may well be that the answer is no.

He was a down to earth guy and didn’t deserve half of the hate he got. Thank you for ending our trophy drought Erik! Best of luck for your future

I was among those who felt we were on shaky ground heading into last season. I didn't have a good feeling about the team after the Carabao Cup win, and it turned out to be accurate. I had advocated for his departure since Christmas 2023.

It’s not that I ever disliked him; I just felt he wasn't the right fit for us. My concerns were heightened after his comments about Ajax, and I had mentally prepared myself for his exit after that. However, I don't believe he deserved the vitriol he received. There were mitigating circumstances for some of the poor performances, but ultimately, he wasn't the right coach for us at this time. If he had joined a club that had been part-sold and had a solid structure in place, perhaps he would have succeeded, but we’ll never know.

So long, Erik. Thank you for the trophies and the memorable days out at Wembley.

Classy statement. Thank you Erik. Best of luck in your career. You'll get an amazing reception if you ever come back to OT in the opposition dugout.

Ok, thanks mate. Look forward to seeing you in future!

Sincerely,

I rated him and still do. He was undone by bad signings, stubbornness and a rotten club culture. If the new guy does better he owes a lot to the progress made in the last two years.

Always liked him, but the players let him down in the end.

The FA cup win over City is probably one of Uniteds best performances ever. Thank you for that.

I backed him for ages, and even thought he still might turn it around when given another chance this season, but he played me for a mug, so I just don't feel any soppy sentiment for him at all now, he was rubbish, he over stayed his welcome, and I'm glad he's gone.
Why are you making it about you?

Hes always been a classy person all things considered. The only real mistake he did was to abandon his initial plan and chose to be the best transition team. His first season midfield was the stuff of dreams for United fans (including getting Erikssen for free) then he pivoted from that. The moment he shifted his focus and kept persisting in that "new vision" eventhough its clearly failing was the killer.

Absolutely not, not even a week and we are re-writing it.

He let the players down, not the other way around.

Thanks for the efforts, the trophies but times time.

1. Won two trophies after 6 years trophy drought
2. Beating City in FA was amazing moment
3. Got rid most of deadwood
4. Fully promoted Mainoo and Garnacho
5. Left more or less good squad (especially regarding age) to next manager
6. He never disrespected club in any way.
7. Seemed as a nice guy.

Thank you, Erik.
Also Dealt with the prima donna Ronaldo and the waster Sancho. I liked Ten Hag as a character, just seems his ideas are either too complex for the players to execute, or his ideas are too simple to work at this level.

Our general play is levels below what a title chasing United side would look like. The contrast couldn’t be any starker than when you rewatch a match with Keane Scholes Beckham et al.

I want to no longer feel existential dread on match days.

For me his signing improved the mood significantly. Felt like we had made the right choice and we're on to something good. Wasn't to be in the end but has his highlights.

Main issue for me was he was given "proven/ready" players. Don't think his style, authoritarian maybe?, worked with them. I always wonder what SAF would have done if he got the Ronaldo ETH got rather than the spotty teenager he moulded?

ETH came from a background of making kids into good players, a bit like Amorim. I think the approach a manager takes with them is different to players who have "made it".

Looking at the class of 92 and the things they say about SAF, the fear and respect they have for him, I doubt that is there if a player who is at the top of his game is signed. Wonder if Veron and likes of Barthez and the coke snorting goalie were issues for that reason?

The positives -

o - I think he dealt with the Sancho, Rashford, Ronaldo and Garnacho disciplinary issues well.

o - The trophies.

o - Integrating Mainoo and Garnacho into the first team.

The negatives -

o - Everything else really (The press conferences, no playing identity, the excuses)

Really wanted to believe in him but what he promised and what actually happened were completely different. I don't know what happened but by the end it felt like he was an awful tactician and poor communicator.

What are Bournemouth doing. Just wasted a great chance

Was pro ETH while he was trying to implement some possesion based football, but his best transition team was arguably to worst United has looked post SAF.

Good guy. Took a tough job. Got us some titles. Lined team up for coming manager. Lacked carisma.

Stop sticking up for these players.

Good post

Part of me starting to regret the two trophies after hearing about them in this manner for so long.

Our very own bald and fraud hipster dream that we longed for for so long, it didn't pan out but still he did many things right with transferred out and in and added trophies and hope for a while. At the end we were like a beta test where the developer refused to change the bugs and as the man of principles that he is, went down with his own stubbornness, the same trait that was so promising at the start. Thank you for the tenure.

undoubtedly a good coach/tactician - much better than Moyes without doubt as well.

Good disciplinarian - exactly what we needed after the woodward disneyland era.

as other members said, his "transition team" tactics set up for his own failure. It completely doesn't make sense either since he bought lots of Ajax players who fit playing possession based football.

INEOS absolutely bottled this. The fans are idiots. They panicked and bowed to pressure when they should have got rid of the problem players....Think "tah rah fergie" and "sell giggs, sack fergie".

The fans have absolutely no idea of behind the scenes work going on and progress within the youth ranks etc

The man got us two cups in two years and with a squad of duds. Imagine if we'd allowed him time to build. It took fergie 7 years to win that first title. 7!

The worrying part is that you're not trolling with your entire post, but the bit in bold is beyond delusional.

I nearly took the bait and started to refute your post but thankfully realised in time that this would be akin to debating with a flat earther.

Agreed with all of this especially the Sancho and Ronaldo situations. Though Erik didn't work out, he still did some good while he was here, and moving on these two toxic characters was a big part of this.

Onwards and upwards to new and better things. :)

Just €660 million spent on signings/loans during the 5 transfer windows he oversaw as manager.

You're right, he might have gotten somewhere once we had reached the €1 billion mark.

The problem players are not ones he purchased. They are unfortunately our "best" players. They are not good enough though in attitude or application. And by best I mean Rashford, Garnacho and Casemiro.

Casemiro was signed during ten Hag's time. He was the one who gave Garnacho his proper breakthrough and made his an established player.

If ten Hag's signing has worked out, he wouldn't have been sacked. In an alternative universe... Antony is the best RW in the league and Amrabat is a stud who is signed permanently.

Jonny fecking Evans has been one of ten Hag's best signings, which says it all.

Tell you what I don’t get, yesterday’s performance being some justification for his sacking being deemed a bad move

You can still be a shit team after a shit manager has gone.

"a squad of duds" who finished 2nd and 6th before EtH, then 3rd and 8th under EtH after over half a billion spend and several real duds recruited only because ten Hag knew them
