Eric Ramsay joins the first team coaching set up

Why’s he getting so much praise from the squad? Isn’t he a set piece coach? We rarely score them and always look like conceding on them. I’ve not seen anything different aswell to say we’re working on corners.
Maybe he is all "laugh and giggles". As we all know, our players love that approach.

I'd have thought the examples of McKenna and Carrick would make some here a little more cautious about criticising our coaches. Ramsay was incredibly highly rated before joining United. Could it be that he's actually pretty... good? He's not a set piece coach and was never brought in for that reason (allegedly he was filling in temporarily).

Knee jerk. When was the last time we conceded via set piece ? What's the average ?

What does he do then?

By all accounts, he's a first team coach. Not a set piece specialist coach. I'm just saying that we can't completely judge him solely on being a member of ETH's coaching team, just as we couldn't judge McKenna or Carrick in Ole's setup. We had more of an idea of McKenna when he was coaching the under 18s and they played attractive, possession heavy football. Yet little of that was translating to the first team because McKenna's methods had to fit into Ole's tactical framework. I suspect we'll see Ramsay in a positive light in his next job in the same way we now do of McKenna and Carrick. Lots of talk around coaching circles is that he's excellent.

If people blame coaches for our set pieces, then do they also give credit to Tottenham coaches, or other teams that score from set pieces and defend them effectively?
Or is it just as simple as having a good set-piece taker and players that can actually put a forehead on the ball?

Has Southampton, and now Westham been threatening on set pieces because they have top of the line set-piece coach, or is it just James Ward-Prowse generating many opportunities to score?

Are we not scoring because Bruno delivery is just never aggressive enough to make it easy for the players attacking the ball?
Are we defending poorly because we have a small team?

Personally I think that's another aspect that people are over complicating. Blaming the coach for set pieces in current United team is like blaming coaches for not making Eriksen run faster. It is what it is because of the players we have available.

Its great that a specialist has joined the club, carefully prepared set pieces are an essential part of any teams makeup nowadays.

Good posts, which fit in with what I've been told.

Every coach, scout, or young player is highly rated when we sign them.

It's such a pointless phrase. It should just be a given. What would be the point in signing or hiring anybody at a club like this if they weren't 'highly rated'?

This is great news! It’s what everyone was saying we needed last season. We conceded an awful lot of goals of set pieces, this should improve us massively. Things are looking promising for next season!

That , unfortunately, hasn't aged well has it ?

Aston Villa. 2 of them in fact - one free kick that went through all the way and very poorly defended. The other one through a corner which was also shockingly defended with no marking whatsoever at the far post.

Also two against galatasaray.

Even with a set-piece coach, I don't trust Onana. If you ask me today, who do I choose between David and Onana? It will be David by a mile. Onana is just a bad keeper and we spend 54 million pounds. I am no scout but I am sure we can pick an equally competent keeper for 1/2 the price.

No, he’s right. Before the game, Man Utd had conceded only three goals from corners in the league this season. Meaning only five teams have defended corner kicks better. Set pieces in general we are mid table. So it’s true, it’s a bit knee jerk to claim we’re particularily bad at defending corners (and even set pieces) based on one game and anecdotal evidence that comes to mind.

Spurs had scored seven goals from corners, the second highest. So it’s probably not a complete coincidence they scored from one of a dozen yesterday.

The one thing I’d criticize regarding corners and set pieces yesterday, is that we gave too many away, and that consistently having Mainoo marking Romero and Richarlison was a bad match.

If we want a specialist set piece coach we should go for the one Aston Villa have. He seems passionate about it and you always see them with different routines which they actually work on.

Honestly, our set-piece is so terrible mostly due to our lack of aerial duel in the air. Varane, McT, Shaw are OK but surely not expert. Other than the 3, I could not name who we could count on to win headers at both sides.
On the offensive side, Bruno also should be blamed as his delivery just lack of quality in set piece. Very inconsistent and often not go past the first post, which is unacceptable. Also speed and curving wise are nothing but average.
Eriksen is a better kicker but I rather he not starting anymore taken he is clear liability in the midfield.
I hope Mount can be placed this responsibilities after he comes back.
Luke Shaw seems kicking OK corners so far , but tactics wise I would rather LB stay at back to cover for counter instead of going to kick the corner.
Lastly, I would strongly advocate Bruno to stop trying the crazy "passing to the top of the box" corner . He can't deliver accurately enough, and we don't have anyone who know how to score high-technique volley balls from there.

And we're so good at allowing that, that diagonal free kick or corner into the box that either goes all the way through or an opponent heads it uncontested. That's on coaching. Every time we have to face a set piece around or into the box, it's borderline chaos and yet it never improves. I really don't know what our coaching team does.
