My Heart Says Oh Ah Cantona

But they are two totally different players who would have been perfect together. Impossible to say on a pure on-the-field level.

You cannot compare like with like.

Hmmm Looks the same to me ;)

In what sense is the question asked?

If you mean who the better player was; Eric

If you mean in terms of what they did for United; Eric.

sorry i missed this off!

who would you rather have in your team?

Eric made Fergie's first great team. He led us to glory, taught the young 'uns how to play footy, and beat Liverpool all by his lonesome. Has to be Eric.

Maybe Ruud in a few years though. It's hard to say. One thing's for sure, eventually there will be another great player who will eclipse Eric's memory and take his place as the King of Old Trafford. Whether or not it will be Ruud is not clear. I would say probably not, but who knows?

You are being biased now. You cannot compare, I've told you this. We all love the old Rey Rana, but you cannot say he was a better player than Ruud, it's impossible to say. It's like those who voted for Cantona as being the best player in our history.

They played in different positions, it's like saying who would you rather have: Ruud or Palister. Madness IMO!

FFS, it's like comparing Apples, Oranges, Pears, and Grapefruit.

What about comparing their contributions to United Weaste? That's possible dontcha think?

To be fair Ruud is still playing and only in his second season, but I'd like to look back about 10 years down the road and say, "Ruud was a great Red, but Eric was the King." Or vice versa.

What's wrong? You look kind of green. Was the duck not boiled?
:p

I read an article about Cantona's time in England.

Apparently, Souness had the opportunity to sign him for Liverpool before he went to Leeds ( ).

Also apparently, when Ferguson had the opportunity to sign him, he wanted to know more about the guy. So he phoned up an acquaintance in France.

His acquaintance told him "buy him, he will win you the league".

Who was it? Gerard Houllier.

Anyone know if there is any truth in this story?

Yes. And isn't it funny that Houiller still has done more for United than he ever will for Liverpool... ;)

I said on the "pure on-the-field level", no one quetions Cantona's impact behind the scenes, but as you say, "Ruud is still playing and only in his second season", so why are we comparing, especially when then play in different positions. 63 goals in 80 odd games (Whatever it is, can't be arsed looking it up) is good enough for me.

Don't compare them, it's a farce to do so!

And for those who insist on comparing, then compare Edwards to Cantona and give us all a laugh.

different players.

BOTH CLASS.

Maybe you shouldn't look at the past but at the present and the future...

I am being biased. In my opinion, and comparitively short time as a United fan (about 12 years), Cantona was amongst the greatest players I have seen in the red shirt, if not thee greatest.

I just don't feel Ruud has done enough yet. Don't get me wrong, Ruud is a fantastic player also. And five years down the line, he'll be a 'great' also.

In response to the question who would I rather have in my team? Eric. Predicatable eh? ;)

Totally! The trouble is, you can have the two as they don't play in the same position.

Don't speak too soon matey. Remind me, what did Sir Alex do in his first seven years at Man Utd?

In fact, half the reason I'm here at all is because I'm sick of them lot at Koptalk calling for Gerard's head.

oh you wont find any of that over here, we all love Houlliers work at liverpool at the moment

anyway, the bit about sir alex phoning up gerrard, i've heard it before and its bollocks, i think even crazyeyes himself denied it.
Isnt KopTalk just full of glory-hunting little scousers who started supporting pool during your 'fabulous' 'quadrouple' season in 01...or are there a few geiune fans?

anyway, on topic. No one compares to ruud, he was one of the greats of the century, and ccertainly the best player of the 90's i would say. I was watching a few old videos of united the other day and obviously he was on them, he was something special, there will never be a player like him, ever.

I'd agree with that. Although there's is more than 'the odd' WUM...

I will not compare these two players. They have different roles and have different styles. It would have been so great to see these two guys play together. Just like I would have loved to see Ole play more with Eric. I think Eric is the kind of guy who can play with just about any other striker with him. He always has the chemistry clicking. You sure cannot substitute him for anyone else, given the choice. Having said, that, the comparison with RVN is a non-issue.

Well, he won the Premier League, the FA Cup, the league cup (ok, we don't care about that one, but still) and the Cup Winners' Cup.

The team he had just built was abouth to go dominate the English game for the next decade (or so). Oh, and then there was the Class of '92.

Liverpool today are where they were when Houllier signed.

A little off topic it seems. As for Eric v. Ruud? Well, I wouldn't want to chose really. Eric has obviously done more for United but Ruud's barley started yet... They would've formed a great partnership.

I can see it coming Giggzy, some cnut will produce a keane vs Eric thread now!

God forbid an Eric vs Verón thread.

Yeah there's a bit of a mixed bag.

to me there is no comparison. some 1 will have probably already said this, but, ERIC was a centre forward who could score goals. RUUD is a striker who can score goals, but, in my opinion ERIC would be the perfect centre forward for RUUD.. Any shot ERIC couldn't finish....RUUD would certainly be there to crack it home!!! so i am sayin there is no comparison coz they would compliment each other

He's been here 1 season+ and you're comparing him with one of the all time United greats...
