feck it Glaston's attitude to this has moved this from a 'no way' to a 'yes please' for me.
I think we differ on Herrera's ability then. I think he adds bite in midfield while being good on the ball. Dier and Herrera would effectively give Pogba the license to do whatever he wants, and we need to building a team around Pogba in my opinion.
You'd best aim to finish in the Prem's top 4 to start with ... baby steps and all.
Thank God that day won't be coming anytime soon.To be fair Glaston was an annoying gobshite when Spurs were regularly finishing midtable and we were battering them twice a season.
Spurs improvement has just given him more ammo. Christ knows what he'd be like if they actually won something.
Could be right there. My main criticism of Herrera is that he's not precise or creative enough. Something that top teams excel with. Not singling him out, because most are bad for it, but I can't help but feel it's a position that majorly contributes to what others do.

Yeah, this has 'Alvaro Morata' written all over it. Given that Lukaku admitted that he's known for months that we were after him, the Morata briefs were the smokiest of screens. Why would Woodward brief about Dier when we know how difficult a deal this would be to pull off? Perhaps it really is a smokescreen?
Contracts are meaningless, thats a fact in football today. That fulfils only 1 of the 3 conditions I stated.
You apparently take the view that contracts are meaningless and that any player should be allowed to immediately leave if they get a better offer in terms of wages. I don't share that view and nor does Levy.
Players expect contracts to be NOT meaningless when it comes to receiving the wages stated therein. So by the same token the length of the contract also has meaning in terms of some form of commitment by the player to the club. They can't have it both ways.
If you want your club to be run differently, that's your lookout.
Hi @GlastonSpur , I think you forgot to reply to this. How many years since your team won anything of note though, Glaston? As I assume finishing in the top 4 does not really yield anything except the CL, which we are also in?

All a contract means in football is we agree to pay you and you agree to play, for now!
DO you think spurs actually wanted to sell Carrick? Bale? Modric? Or everton, Lukaku. scoousehampton, toothy. Goonies, Sanchez. United, Pogba? or Ronaldo who just signed a 5 year deal the summer before. DO you think we wanted to sell DDG in 2015, even this summer Real thought they'd click their fingers, DDG told em do one. There is reams worth of players who wanted to leave that clubs wanted to stay.
Players have all the power, if they decide they are leaving thats pretty much it. The club can make a plea to the player and he may relent but its his decision and you'd probably only have to look at chelsea to see what happens when you refuse to sell players and how they downed tools. This off season, again coffee is at it and lets see who he brings with him this time.
How many times do you need to hear about no loyality in football anymore and contracts mean nothing in football, before you realise its true. I get its not the Sanchez situation but its all Dier's decision to make or the rot it creates is just not worth it.
I would offer you a bet on this, but the last two United fans that I bet with disappeared from the forum without paying when they lost the bet ... so I won't bother.
Where have u been living? £50M 10 years ago is nowhere near £50M now, it's simple economics.
I presume we can either force this to happen or at least force spurs to pay him double what he's on, which would be a result too.
I thought about this all last night and I think I like the move. We probably have to accept that Mourinho is after a shield, not a deep play maker. He wants a tall and strong player to add to that overall theme.
At Dier's age he could really improve. He is good on the ball and has the physical attributes, if he can learn a lot from Mourinho and Carrick he could well be the best holder in the league for a number of years. If he is that then 50m is a fair price.
If Mourinho gets sacked and moves on then it'll probably be money not well spent, just like with all the other players other managers brought it, but if Mourinho stays for a while then I think this will work out.
Not sure if anyone feels like this, but as someone who grew up watching us in the 90s with the likes of Giggs and Kanchelskis breaking so quickly (and 2008-era Rooney and Ronaldo) it's actually hard to watch the pace of our football lately. And adding Dier will mean a lot more of the patient sideways and backwards passing we've seen so much of. I know the game has changed, I just think that feeds in to the lack of spark from midfield. Would love to see a player like Alexis add some urgency, can't see it happening sadly.
Would make Dier the 14th most expensive signing in football history and the 7th most expensive midfielder (Oscar went to China for 60million!). Dier would cost along the lines of De Bruyne who was only bought 2 years ago and was one of the best in Germany. Dier will cost more than Lacazette, a proven goal scorer in a world where goal scorers are most valuable. Dier will cost more than Di Maria on route to PSG.£50m for a DM should be getting you a peak Xabi Alonso or at least somebody on that sort of trajectory in terms of quality.
We all know Eric Dier ain't getting near that level.
It's not that I don't think he wouldn't do a job for us or fit into Jose's system, it's the lack of ambition it'd signify.
Idiotic and childish response, Glaston. Still, expect nothing less.
Thanks for the detailed econometric analysis on the development of economics in professional football, but that was not the point.
£50m was a helluva lot of money 10 years ago just as it is today, perhaps not on the same level but come on, seriously, you can't really be trying to tell me that Levy woiuld scoff at such a bid, that's ridiculous. Clearly the bid would come under immense consideration and I firmly believe he would accept it.

Dier is a smokescreen for Fabhino and perisic is a smokescreen for Alexis Sanchez. #mufc, remember this tweet!!!

Yep.
Alexis would be much better in DM than Dier, who as you rightly point out is a poor mans Giggs/Kanchelskis.
We should sign him at any price
Quite a weird response, I'm just pointing out adding Dier would continue a slow build up in our play, rather than a pacier DM. As a separate point, adding Alexis as an attacking option would give us some spark and urgency

Well then hopefully the transfer will happen if he knows he can double his wage here or more. Going rate for a started in this team is surely 100k+Levy won't budge on the wage structure at Spurs.

His club don't see him as good enough to hold for them and he has been less than great for England. What makes you predict these heights?I presume we can either force this to happen or at least force spurs to pay him double what he's on, which would be a result too.

Remind me who are Spurs' realistic taergets this window? I think it's the fact that most of us don't rate Dier that has upset youYou won't.
This deal is not going to happen, so United best not waste their time when you could be chasing more realistic targets.

They are completely different players, Carrick always had an eye for a pass and was very technical, I think whoever we deploy in CDM needs a comparable passing range and Eric Dier simply does not.The money being suggested for him is mental, but this season the prices have taken a particularly large step up again, even so, I think he would be a good addition to the side as a successor to Carrick, who might be in his final season.
A lot of the comments in here were the same sort of things people were saying about Carrick when he came to United and look how that turned out.
However, I can't really see then letting go of Dier and Walker in the same window, both important players for them.
Let's learn from what's happened over the past 10-days.
Nobody of ANY note has any darn clue who we are signing. United are keeping everything very close to their chest. And take it from me, they are playing the media like fools. Lots of misdirection going on.
The Guardian reporting that we are after Dier and he is "open to a move".
I have a feeling that we can get this done if the player makes a scene at Spurs but he won't come cheap.
Levy is of course the biggest obstacle.
