Enzo Fernández | signs for Chelsea

Between him and Caicedo we could have had two top talents who are already better than our current options bar Casemiro for a pittance.

feck yes, was disappointed we didn't sign him last winter when Ralf wanted him.

He's gone on to boss it for the only undefeated side left in Europe and will figure to play a big role for Argentina at the world cup

If we could get him for anything less than 40m£ would be fantastic.
But we really need to be making more of these 20m signings for the squad, kinda like Malacia.

Why are we always do these type of things too late ? Its making me so mad

Why take him from River Plate on peanuts price when you could buy him for 70m after few months...

Maybe he's a Fred Replacement ?

Would Benfica sell him after just half season though? We could have get him for cheap this summer.

This is because £20m signings are hit and miss. We need to improve our first 11, not improve the squad, that will come later.

Malacia was a good buy but he is a squad option at the moment. Whats the point buying £20m players then having Ronaldo start?

It’s not always through lack of trying. nowadays players seem to prefer going to a smaller club first to get guaranteed playing time before stepping up

Haaland the obvious example. It makes sense for the player and the agents too.

How depressing that if we had a south america scout who actually did his job and had a pair of eyes then we could have signed:

Caicedo £5m
Alvarez £14m
Enzo Fernandez £14m

From only a limited amount of scouting it was clear these were top top talents. Honest all 3 were absolutely destroying the opposition at their former clubs. We are a joke.

Genuinely think many of us on here could do a better job than those employed at the club.

Why the feck didn't we just sign him in the summer

This is all well and good but are you going to be saying this when they are really inconsistent? The requirements for Brighton and Manutd are different. We are looking to improve our first 11, with players who can come in and improve everyone.

Caceido would hardly have got games here, its a different pressure at big clubs, you dont get 10 games, you get 1/2 and if you are not good enough, you dont start for a while.

Club hasn't had the bottle to sign South American gambles since Chicharito. No idea why.

It feels like unless they're already ready made stars in Europe we feel they aren't good enough.

Enzo Ferdandes would have got games here, he's playing UCL football at Benfica, Alvarez would have got games here, we don't even have a number 9.
As for Caicedo, he didn't start immediately for Brighton, and we signed Pelletri and Amad for larger amounts, so I'm not sure what the excuse is here

They were clearly outstanding talents. We were liked to many others like sangare etc who it was clear were lacking in technical ability. Now we’re supposedly interested when they’re unattainable or would cost over £70m.

Endrick is another example of a player who you can guarantee will be top tier, no chance of that one either though as the likes of City and Madrid are already interested.

I mean you have said they would start, yet we have 2 who don't start. Which clearly shows why they would chose a smaller club before going to a big one.

There is no excuse, its difficult for players to get into the top teams straight away, now look at Amad and Pellestri, they can't even get a good loan.

A youngster who has his career in mind would do what they have done. You could say the same with Jude, he could start here right now. However; at the time, we could not guarantee a 16 year old game time, its not something big clubs can do, which is why he went to Dortmund knowing he would start and then have faith that their ability will take them onto a big club.

Both were clearly no way near the standard of the 3 aforementioned talents.

Just seen a 2 min YouTube clip.

Looks like a generational talent. Pay whatever it takes, this kid is going to the top.

I do remember having a conversation about midfielders. The names you mentioned in Jan this year were Zakaria and Kamara being no risk signings.

Can you tell me how they have fared?

Alot of fans just see what midfielder is trending and we should go for them.

He is the high-energy box-2-box that we were urgently needing for some seasons. Don't think he will go anywhere with just half-a-season, tbh.

The quality is clear to see, same with Caicedo, Alvarez. Hence why it's so frustrating we weren't in for them. Hardly huge risks at what they would have cost.

They we're free transfers if I recall and considering we had pretty much only McTom and Fred at the time don't think they would have fared any worse.

I thought we were in for Alvarez, until he heard about City's interest and we withdrew?

Nope, the below was what you said.. not free. Zakaria can barely get a game at Chelsea and they have no midfielders and Kamara cant get a game at Villa.

"You're happy with Mctominay, Fred and Matic for the holding mid positions until the end of the season?

Kamara available for less than 15m and Zakaria for 6m.. hardly a huge risk is it?"

Ah yes, they were free in the summer. I never said they were in the league of Fernandez, they were potential stop gaps. Not sure Mctominay would get a game at Chelsea or Villa either btw.

Nope, only Kamara was free, Zakaria went to Juve and now is on loan from Juve to Chelsea.

Well, you dont know if McTominay would start or not, the point I am making is being better than McTominay or same level is not what we need.

You never know how a player develops at different clubs. Caicedo is now a regular, almost 18 months later btw.

Look at the players we have signed under 18, none of them have ever made it.
Jones, Powell, Hannibal, Diallo, Pellestri.

So there is no evidence to suggest that if we signed any of them, they would have developed here.

The problem is they don’t look like a huge risk until you start totalling all these small risks up. They also look like bargains in hindsight when they succeed elsewhere. For every Haaland, Dias, Diaz we miss out on who go on to be a success, there are probably twice as many that were similar risk that failed but we don’t hear about. We took small risks on the likes of DVB, Amad, Pellistri, Telles which when totalled up equate to a lot of money.

I’m all for buying young promising talent but the truth is the probabilities of them being a success in the premier league is less than them being a failure.

Both are good midfielders. Kamara has the highest ceiling but he is injured, so logically can't play. Zakaria is a very solid anchor that would probably start in many quality teams around Europe.

Lets see how high his ceiling is then when he is back from injury.

Zakaria is a solid anchor and would start in many teams? Juventus and Chelsea are not quality teams then? Cause he barely starts / started for either of them.

the evidence was available from watching them. Fernandez, caicedo, Alvarez were tearing it up in professional mens football. Two of them for River Plate no less, likes of Hannibal, Diallo, pellistri had barely played a senior game. Not the same.

They improve by going to the clubs they go to. We barley give VDB minutes what would be the point of signing players who we aren’t going to risk.

The best tried and tested is to get them at this stage of there development and not before.

Unless you are willing to take the development hit which only works if you are highly successful with limited competition or you aren’t interested in achieving short term success ala Arsenal.

So is this our alternative to FDJ? Can’t see it done in January but maybe in the summer.

Our central midfield is set and pretty decent this season really.

Zakaria is shite end of. He couldn’t succeed at Juve and isn’t succeeding at Chelsea.

I fail to see what impression he would of made here except for a midfield version of Ighalo.

Man Utd:

Signing Caicedo, Alvarez, Enzo for 33m.

Signing Amad and Pellistri for 30m? :D

could have signed him for 14m in the summer only to piss it away then possibly go back in for him and 4 times the cost....only United does business like this

someone please fire the fuking twat that keeps saying NO when our scouts find that gem of a talent
