That's one explanation for it, but the other is that it's because it is 'wrong'.
You also get a 'chinese cut' for a cut that's inside edged into the leg side, which is a bit more clear cut.

I'd have taken Leach off for Broad this over.. I know he's getting the odd grubber but they aren't feeling the pressure of him

It was a stupid move to send Roy to open. He doesn't have the technique to open in test matches and from what I've read that he hasn't once opened in domestic test matches too. Bizzare stuff.

England can take a lot of encouragement from that. Headingley could be very interesting, especially with Smith in doubt.
That is normally the tale but I disagree on this occasion. Think Root got it just right. Gave the Australians a slim chance they still had around 40 overs to bowl.
Thought Leach finally offered that control that England lacked with Ali. Shows he’s going to be a threat going forward especially on later days.

I don't think England were perfect in that final session, but it does feel a bit nit picky to pull up too much.
They should have declared immediately after Stokes' century to give them the extra couple of overs, perhaps a shorter burst with Archer up top and a little bit of Woakes with the new ball (but didn't think his lengths were right when he did get a chance) which would have allowed Archer to come back on a bit earlier, and perhaps could have turned to Denly earlier rather than Root (although, he obviously moves it away from the left hander), but those are all minor things, and on another day Roy takes the sitter and England had more than a sniff.
Anyway, a few longer thoughts.
Massive positive steps for England obviously including a first century for Stokes in about two years.
I do wonder if the Archer introduction actually serves as a blueprint for what England should be doing with young talent. Obviously Archer honed his game, and probably was prepared for this stage, on the T20 circuit, but most of his red ball skills will have been learnt in county cricket. If he had been England eligible from Day One he'd have been selected three years ago on his raw pace alone, does his accomplished debut suggest that it's a better strategy to hold these players back until they have developed, rather than asking them to grow on the international stage?
I think Leach has probably done enough to secure himself as a fixture of the side too, but I do wonder if long term he's going to have to put more onto the ball than he currently does. I think he's been really benefited by playing at Taunton which has given him a grounding very few England spinners get of actually bowling in helpful conditions (an underrated skill, I think) but the flip side is that it may have become too easy for him to extract turn.
I thought Denly had a good game too despite not converting any of his starts. With the short turnaround between games is there an argument for opening with him and moving Roy to 4 rather than drafting in a new opener immediately?

It's a risky strategy to prepare quick pitches - Starc is nearly as quick as Archer and Cummins, Patterson and Hazelwood are quicker than any other English bowler. But it seems the best way to get Smith out, so it's probably worth trying.
Old Trafford is usually quick anyway and The Oval can be quite lively as well.
Agree on the points about England's performance. They should have got a wriggle on in the morning, to be honest - Buttler's 30 off 110 balls doesn't look great in the context of the match situation - but it was a very positive day overall. We've got a real template to rattle Smith now.
We do need to watch how we use Archer though. I'm not the biggest fan of Root's captaincy and worry that he'll just bowl him into the ground. As you say, short, sharp spells are best. We really need to find another quick bowler to play alongside him.
On Leach, I don't think you can really change how much you spin the ball. Having bowled slow-left arm myself (albeit at a far, far lower level), I can say from experience that some bowlers just don't have the same ability to rag the ball as others. Some have smaller fingers, some find it uncomfortable, some just don't have the same control as they do if they roll the ball out. For that reason I don't think Leach can change too much. Moeen is still our best option if we want a genuine wicket-taking finger spinner.
And on county cricket, you may be right - but I think Archer's just a freak, really. He's played fewer than 30 first-class games and I would imagine most, if not all of those have come in division two. You could point to plenty of other bowlers (Woakes, Moeen, Rashid to name but a few) who have come into the England side after several years in county cricket and have still faced a major adaptation process.

I find if I google 'cricket highlights' I pretty quickly find a dodgy website that offers me 20 minutes or so highlights from each day's play. Pretty badly edited but watchable.
ECB does about 5 minutes per day on Youtube. I don't know about the availability of that in different countries.

Micheal Vaughan talks a lot of shite doesn't he? He seems to change his opinion like the wind.
He sometimes make Sanjay Manjrekar look better. Most of his opinion are Piers Morgan's esque and I think he just does that to irritate people but he needs to tone it down a bit. He is better than that.
Vaughan's correct though that Root has to go back to 4, it's pointless him coming in at 3 and isn't helping the team in any way.
Agree. The only person it's helping is Joe Denly.
I still think England will make a comeback and win the Ashes 2-1 or 3-1. Australia are totally dependent on Smith and he will have one or two failures and that is when others have to step up and I cannot see who those others will be for Aussies. Archer will only get better so that will be an awesome thing for England and their batting is too good to continue failing. Stokes have found his groove back and Butler and Bairstow would be happy after getting to spend some time at the crease. I like Burns and call em crazy but I will continue with Roy. I think he was trying too hard in the first two matches. Still trying to find the correct balance maybe. I would just ask him to play his natural game and not think too much. Are there any good spinners coming from the domestic setup for England? They should call someone to strengthen their spin department.
