England vs Sri Lanka - Tour thread

Is Dilshan fit to bat in the second innings?

No, he's probably going to miss the rest of the series according to reports.

Thanks for that. There is not even a remote chance of Lanka win then.

The bowling attack is still ring rusty to be fair to them. I wouldn't mind seeing Bresnan and Onions given a run out at the Rose Bowl.

England really do have a very good seam attack to choose from. Now all we need is one more decent spinner...

Bresnan is out for the series. Unless Anderson is fit I think they should keep faith with these lads. None of them have played much recently and need the overs to peak for India later in the summer. I know Finn & Broad have been inconsistent but when they bowl in the right place you can see the potential there. Both are developing in to very dangerous bowlers.

Sorry, hadn't realised Bresnan was still injured!

Broad needs the overs and Finn does need the experience, true. I do like the look of Finn, he could be an excellent bowler in the future.

Anderson should be fit for next Thursday though.

Errr... wake up

Tremlett's doing some harm again. He reminds me of one those nasty West Indies quickies from the 70's & 80's. SL 39-4

Ball swinging around and good bounce as well, Sri Lanka can't cope. Tremlett's been brilliant for England, no nonsense type of bowler. I think Broad needs to improve his wicket-taking, don't think they'll drop him but his stats the past year haven't been the greatest (he has been injured though).

I hope the rain doesn't feck up the Indian series, that should be much tougher for England than this.

Keep faith in Broad. He didn't even start bowling until he was 18 or summat and he's already bowling 90mph. When he's the finished article he's going to be a world beater.

They've definitely got an issue growing with Broad
If there was another Test match against SL, I could seem them playing Finn, no reason to really need his batting with four bowlers

But the fact that it is India next imo means he's probably going to be given more time

Bit of a fightback from Sri Lanka, 177-9

Tremlett has been world class, I mean, really world class. The pitch is far better than 177-9, although Sri Lanka did keep having to come off & on all the time yesterday.

They just showed that the top 7 England batsmen have batting averages over 40, I looked up Graham Gooch's average, whom I would consider as a true great, a legend of the game and way above any of the current crop in status, and his average is 42.58.

Has the quality of bowling dropped considerably in the last few years or was Gooch not as magnificent as I imagined?

Dramatically so, today you'd struggle to find a single genuine out an out world class bowling attack from any country to be fair, lots of good bowlers even very good ones but go back to the 90's and you had Akram and waquar at Pakistan, Mcgrath,Warne, Gillespie and co in Aus, Donald and Pollock in their pomp for SA, Murali and Vaas etc, the quality of bowling is definitely less than it was in Goochs time.

Also the pitches in todays game are so batsmen friendly, far more so than they used to be.

Good to see Prior laughing after his dismissal.

Century from Sangakkara, great player.

Alastair Cook has been quick to snap back after the former England captain, Michael Atherton, criticised his appointment as one-day captain, calling him "a plodder at the top of the order" and "a bit of a donkey" in the field.

"It takes one to know one, I suppose," Cook retorted, light-heartedly, and now that he has mastered the art of verbal counterattack all that is left is the need to prove Atherton and Co wrong by playing a few shots on the field. Under floodlights, in the first of five ODIs against Sri Lanka, we will begin to discover if he has the capacity to do just that.

This made me laugh...

Cook out for 5 today...

Currently raining at 35/1 off 7

Sangakarra took a brilliant catch to dismiss Cook, a bit unlucky as those type of shots usually end up with a boundary.

Atherton does the post-match presentations for Sky, should be interesting if England lose the series and Cook struggles to get runs. I personally would have made Bell or Morgan captain, Cook is not an ODI player imo.

That's what everyone seems to be saying...

Huge win for England, Kieswetter played well. Last time we'll see Jayasuriya, one of the most destructive players I've seen.
