England V Australia
4th Ashes Test
Headingley, Leeds
7th - 11th August 2009

This fourth Ashes Test takes place at Headingley Carnegie between 7th-11th August 2009. It has a ground capacity of 17,000 and test cricket has been played there since 1899.

The two ends at Headingley are the Kirkstall Lane End and the Football Stand End. The Football Stand is adjoined to Headingley Rugby Ground's main stand.

The last Ashes test match to be played at Headingley was the 4th test in 2001. Nasser Hussain's England won it by 6 wickets, though were already 3-0 down in the series. England went on to loose the series 4-1.

Headingley was the scene one of the most famous Ashes test matches of all time in 1981. Australia were well poised to take a 2-0 series lead, with England following on. But with perfect timing in stepped Ian Botham and scored an incredible 149 which forced the Aussies to bat again.

England pace bowler, Bob Willis, then destroyed the Australian batting line up with 8 wickets for just 43 runs, which sealed an 18 run win for England and levelled the series. England went on to win it 3-1. The 1981 series was dubbed Bothams Ashes.

With England 1-0 up in the series, this could be the deciding match.

England Team: A Strauss (capt), A Cook, R Bopara, I Bell, P Collingwood, M Prior (wkt), S Broad, S Harmison, G Swann, J Anderson, G Onions

Australia Team: S Watson, S Katich, R Ponting (Capt), M Hussey, M Clark, M North, B Haddin (wkt), M Johnson, S Clarke, P Siddle, B Hilfenhaus.

According to the forecast two spells, which could take out the after tea session on Friday and all day Sunday. They've been way off so far.

As an old codger what I'd give to see a young Derek Underwood bowling for England at Headingley again

what a fcking bowler he was - bit of rain on the pitch and he was unplayable ..........wonderful stuff

Big problem for England if Freddie joins Pietersen on the sidelines. The popular view is that Broad could be dropped for this one, but maybe if Flintoff drops out our batting would look seriously weaker without Broad in the lower middle order.

I thought Broad was pick of the bowlers yesterday did well.

I'll be getting the bus down there to watch day 2 maybe 3 looking forward to it.

Sidebottom recalled.
And some new guy named Trott..

Squad 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Alastair Cook, 3 Ravi Bopara, 4 Ian Bell, 5 Paul Collingwood, 6 Matt Prior (wk), 7 Andrew Flintoff, 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 James Anderson, 11 Graham Onions, 12 Steve Harmison, 13 Ryan Sidebottom, 14 Jonathan Trott.

Australia have clung on to the top spot in the ICC Test rankings, but only victories in both the remaining Ashes Tests will be enough to keep them at No. 1, a place they have held since the introduction of the rankings in 2003.

If the Ashes is drawn, South Africa will be the new leaders with Australia slipping to second place. If England win the Ashes, Australia will slide down to fourth place, behind Sri Lanka and India.

The ICC released the annual update of its Test rankings, and the top four teams - Australia, South Africa, Sri Lanka and India - are separated by only five points. Sri Lanka have moved ahead of India into third place. England will remain in fifth place regardless of how the Ashes pan out.

Possibly, but that's not saying much on the day. Over the series he's struggled for wickets and must surely be under threat. I like the lad though, he's big-hearted and a more than useful batsman and fielder so he might just keep his place.

Not seen this guy Trott play so cant comment ,but I rate Sidebottem has a good inclusion in the team.
Flintoff is in the team , but will he play much part in it ,I have my doubts, looking at the way he struggled at Edgebaston.
The problem is if he does start and them can't carry on ,we are stuck with a sub that cant bowl or bat that will weaken the team even more.
Onions and Anderson are the key here again , they bowl the way they did to get the Aussie's out in the 3rd test we will be on a winner.
Hopefully the rain will stay away and we can get the win to secure the Ashes.
Met Check gives a good outlook after Friday afternoon for no rain , but heavy rain for Friday

I hope he's back.

And the rain keeps away.

Haddin has said he's fit and Lee, it says, has been bowling well in the nets.

Bring Lee in for Siddle and maybe bring Clark in for Johnson. Could be interesting.

Strauss is saying that the day before ,the 4th test that Flintoff does not look 100% fit, well der ,thats not really a shock.
They are going to make a final check in the morning and them see if he plays.
It would be a blow to us ,but not a great shock if he did not play.
Might we worth letting him rest this one and use him in the 5th and final one ,if we need to win.

Yeah they said that about KP aswell and about Flintoff through out the series when has never really been 100%. He will play

Very true , Flintoff has not been fully fit since 2005 and even then he was only 90%,but the way he was struggling al lot in the last test , it makes me wonder if his injury is not worse than what he is letting on.

Team selection will be very interesting if Flintoff is unfit. If he's unfit, I would bring in Trott and Harmmison and drop Broad. If the pitch is not going to offer much spin, I would also bring in Sidebottom for Swann.

There may also be a chance that Trott takes Boparas place or Bell bats at 3 and Bopara at 4.

Geoff Arnold seemed pretty sure the other day that Bopara would bat 3 at Headingley.

I think this will happen.

He looked very ineffective in the last test with the ball. if he plays this 4th test injured and worsens it, it could leave him without enough time for a potentially series deciding 5th test.

I would rest Flintoff for this test.

From what I have read he only bowled 35mins in the nets yesterday.
If they do play him and we bowl first and he fails to bowl and cant field , then we are stuck with a sub on that cant bowl and we also lose a very good slip catcher,if the worse happens we also lose him has a batter and I think that a sun cant bat.If that happens we will lose this test.
This is a major test for us ,we could retake the Ashes with a win here, but I would not risk him and rest him for the last test.

Pretty much agree with all this.

The Aussie batting line-up is starting to look a bit ominous and Ponting is surely due a big score, so this is no time for taking chances with Flintoff.

the rain looks like playings it part in this test again, there is rain expected for late this afternoon,we may lose the last couple of hours play and there is a chance of a washout on Monday.

At some point a test venue in England with a roof of sorts will be needed - it pisses down far too often in England.

Blimey, Matt Prior suffers a back spasm whilst playing football as part of warm-up! England have asked for an extra ten minutes before naming their side.

England have shown some ambition by leaving out Trott despite Freddie's absence. Unfortunately that leaves our batting looking a bit suspect in terms of players in form.
