England V Australia
4th Ashes Test
Headingley, Leeds
7th - 11th August 2009
This fourth Ashes Test takes place at Headingley Carnegie between 7th-11th August 2009. It has a ground capacity of 17,000 and test cricket has been played there since 1899.
The two ends at Headingley are the Kirkstall Lane End and the Football Stand End. The Football Stand is adjoined to Headingley Rugby Ground's main stand.
The last Ashes test match to be played at Headingley was the 4th test in 2001. Nasser Hussain's England won it by 6 wickets, though were already 3-0 down in the series. England went on to loose the series 4-1.
Headingley was the scene one of the most famous Ashes test matches of all time in 1981. Australia were well poised to take a 2-0 series lead, with England following on. But with perfect timing in stepped Ian Botham and scored an incredible 149 which forced the Aussies to bat again.
England pace bowler, Bob Willis, then destroyed the Australian batting line up with 8 wickets for just 43 runs, which sealed an 18 run win for England and levelled the series. England went on to win it 3-1. The 1981 series was dubbed Bothams Ashes.
With England 1-0 up in the series, this could be the deciding match.
