England - Euro 2021 Discussion | FA chairman: Southgate to be offered new contract until Euro 2024

Rashford is probably 4/5 choice on the wings now.
I say right now I will take rashford as a striker than kane. Nobody criticised england captain. They can blame supporters, wind, grass and all the players as the reason for dull football but kane.

The Rice and Phillips partnership is by far the biggest problem. None of them two can take the ball on the turn so they have to play the way they face resulting in a lot of backwards passes to the defenders and Pickford. This means the four players in front of them have to come deep and try and carry the ball far to start attacking moves. The thing is I don't know which player would solve this problem as this as always been Henderson's weakness also and i haven't watched Bellingham enough to judge.

Bellingham would indeed solve this. Southgate hasn't got the stones to play him though.

You can't really blame Southgate for trying to get Kane firing on all cilinders imo. DCL might to better in the short term but will undoubtedly come up short when it matters most in the KO stages, you don't go all the way with a striker of his caliber. However if Kane could get it going...

If Kane doesn't start to step up in the KO stages, England could be out next round.

You can't afford to have a meh game when your next game is against either France, Germany or Portugal.

Obviously, the team is more than 1 player, but still, it's a dangerous position to be in.

Such an odd thread. When have England ever comfortably topped a group in most people's living memory?

They've barely exerted themselves, not conceded and have multiple players they can turn to if needed.

Has it been pretty, not at all, but how often is it that the pace-setters of international tournaments end up winners?

Not saying England are favourites or anything, but this far, they've done the job comfortably.
I agree. Loads of weird comments on the thread, some bordering on the bizarre and outright preposterous. But hey, this is England, and England manager is the worst job in football. Everybody knows more than the manager!

I’d play a different team depending on who we play

France
Pickford
Walker Stones Maguire Shaw
Rice Phillips
Saka Grealish Sterling
Kane

Germany
Pickford
Walker Stones Maguire
James Rice Bellingham Chilwell
Mount Kane Sterling

Portugal
Pickford
Walker Stones Maguire Shaw
Rice
Foden Mount
Sterling Kane Grealish

I would have thought if Southgate was going to play 5 at the back he will do it the other way around, against France and not Germany. Why would you go that way?

There's no way Southgate will start a midfield of Rice, Foden and Mount against Carvalho, Pereira and Bruno, is there? I think he'll stick to his two defensive minded holding midfielders no matter the opposition.

Probably to match their own 3-4-3 system, no?

Rashford is probably 4/5 choice on the wings now.
Pretty sure he’d be starting if fully fit (with Sterling on the right). He’s been the best LW for England for a while and Southgate is normally very loyal even if club form hasn’t been great.

Nothing to do with his performance. He's bagged the only goals and they weren't exactly wonder goals. Or even "that's brilliant by Sterling" moments. We've been pinging long balls and through balls constantly through our opposition (I hate the tactics we've been playing personally) and the amount of chances that have been trashed/wasted far far exceeds the ones that can be deemed 'unlucky'.

If sterling wasn't popping in the 2 goals in 3 games we've scored against Czech, Scotland, Croatia (embarrassing), someone else would have been popping up in those channels. And possibly getting more.

Disagree, Sterlings movement is why he gets those goals (and why he's constantly in a position to fluff things up). Lets take Rashford as the comparison, Rashford is quicker, stronger, better first touch and a better finisher but in terms of having that knack of making the right run at the right time, Raheem simply has it. Its similar to what people said about Cavani in the mid 2010's, almost missed a sitter and fluffed his lines quite a bit but had a staggering return because his movement is just so good.

Sterling is probably the worst technician in the City and England front lines but he offers that natural goal threat that the others just don't. There is a reason he's always in the position to get the tap ins when others aren't, he's always in position to mess up a simple cutback etc... because his movement is world class. To say "oh someone else would be there" is simply not true, how many times has Kane, Foden, Saka, Rashford when he's come on got into those positions? I'm not saying Raheem is a world beater because he's clearly not, simply at this tournament he's Englands only legit goal threat.

That doesn't really prove he would be better than those he's in the team ahead of though, Sterling has been pretty terrible outside the 2 goal contributions, and is a key reason why England look so lacking in creativity. Sterling is in the team ahead of players with a lot of goals to their name, so there's no reason to think those players wouldn't be scoring, and the team might look better for it. Sterling being wasteful also always becomes all the more apparent against better teams where chances are more limited.

The inverse of this theory would be to say Mings should keep his place ahead of Maguire, and some were saying this, but it's nonsense really. We need to find the best team, and it's quite apparent this team is not performing.

As an aside, England still would have qualified with 3 0-0 draws anyway, so it's not strictly true to say Sterling's goals are the only reason they aren't out, Portugal qualified with 3 draws last Euros, and 3 draws would already be enough here, yes the format is that bad.

Who in the squad thats not Kane has a better scoring record than Raheem? People see him mess things up and just presume other players would be same place, same time. Not a single English player from the wingers or centre has got in the positions he has this competition, to presume X would be there or make the same run just because Raheem did is unfair. His one attribute that keeps him from being Theo Walcott is his movement and his decision making on when to go, and where to is probably the best in the squad by a mile. Its the one thing he has over every single winger in the squad, if Rashford played on the left, he might makes the runs but usually not as well or on point as Raheems. Grealish, Foden, Sancho are better with the ball to feet but again don't have the off the ball movement Raheem has. All of Foden, Rashford, Saka have played on the wing for England and none have had little more than a sniff so far.

England have scored 2 goals and hit the woodwork 3 times this tournament. Sterling is responsible for 3 of those 5 attempts. Dismissing what he's doing because he doesn't have the same skill set of Foden or Grealish an co. is hugely unfair. He does what he does and he does it very, very well (frustrating and all as his constant fluffing his lines is)

Saka has played his way into the team next week, he offers the option for us to switch between a 4231 and 523, Sterling’s off the ball movement is so much better than anyone else in the squad so he is a guaranteed starter, Grealish has done more than Mount & Foden so I think he keeps his place and Henderson replaces Phillips for me. Kane is pushing his luck but I just don’t think you can drop him.

Pickford
Walker Stones Maguire Shaw
Henderson Rice
Saka Grealish Sterling
Kane

That’s what I’d go for and I can see Southgate doing the same.

For what it's worth as an non English person watching them play I'm fully with you. I get he can be frustrating but the fact is that its crazy that English fans are on the back of the one guy who has had somewhat consistent output at this tournament. Maybe Kane 'might' start firing with a different player there but you don't drop the one player scoring goals in a fecking tournament for god's sake.

Edit: the reason England look so bad creatively is their midfield of two DMs. The exact same as why United often do.

If Sweden beats Poland then this is England's way to the final!!!!

Last 16 Round: France, Germany, Portugal or Hungary

Quarter-final: Sweden or Ukraine

Semi-final: Netherlands, Czech Republic, Wales or Denmark

Win the Last-16-Round and England have a good chance to reach the final :D

We can beat this Germany team, will we? I'd certainly not bet anything of value on it, but its doable.

It's coming home! Believe. Hashtag Southgate's slug army.

You just know Germany going to destroy England now.

Germany will be favorites and I expect a very defensive set up from Southgate, but to your advantage it’s Wembley and Löw’s school seems to be a bit outdated, this team is hardly convincing. If England manages to win it, you’ll make it far. Still I’d put my money on the Deutsch

I was crying as a young lad when Germany knocked us out at Euro 96, and they've gone down in my estimation today. They've got to come to Wembley and get a result, and I'll tell honestly I will love it if we beat them. Love it.

German's defence is vulnerable. We should be hitting it hard, but you know we won't do that.

England has players to do the job. Question is if Southgate's not afraid to use them combined with well times subs.

Think England has a good chance, I doubt they will concede many chances to Goosens.

Germany being shite today will work in their favour. England will let down their guard. The media will already have crowned them champions of the whole tournament by the time the game starts.

Happy with playing Germany. You'd think with their defence England can get a goal. Just hope they don't play going forward like they did against Portugal.

England’s side of the draw is a cakewalk if they get past Germany. They’ve a great chance of getting to the final.
