He's actually pretty good. After being forced to listen to his songs as a child for years upon years I'd never really cared for him once I grew older but these last few days I've been slowly working my way through his albums and suffice to say he does actually have a lot of good stuff. I knew there was a reason he'd sold over a billion records. I know he didn't write a lot of his stuff, but he certainly made them his own, and he arguably had the greatest and most versatile voice ever. This is one of my favourites, so deep and full of meaning:

I expect Nearco to tell me I'm a dick and all the music snobs to come out in force.

Fat Elvis, not so good. Young Elvis, one of the coolest people ever. Like the music as well. Kind of like The Beatles, if you can make chics cream by singing a song you're cool.

I like Elvis.

The singer, not the poster with a perm.

Pretty much all the stuff on any greatest hits of his is good listening.

My Favourite Elvis song is probably Return To Sender. Great melody. He's brilliant Elvis and is very important in the transition from blues / r'n'b / rock and roll into the rock and pop.

I once made myself an Elvis Presley sandwhich, I can see why he got fat.

He was credited for a few song co-writer, but he didn't actually have anything to do with them. I guess nobody knows if he wrote songs or not.

The fact that Elvis Presley is still one of the most famous people in the World almost 33 years after he died speaks volumes, along the Beatles nobody else comes close, they were unique and are timeless

That for me is why he can't be classed in the upper echelon of musicians. As a performer and a vocalist, yes, but as a musician, no.

Then we can forget about Frank Sinatra, too.

One of the other very greatest artists in the history of recorded music, who has writing credit on something like one or two of his songs.

If you think these people didn't do a tremendous amount to imbue the material with their own personalities, then you're on another planet.

I think What Weaste is saying is fair. I love Elvis, but he was not so much a musician as he was a singer and performer. A musician is someone who plays and writes music. Same can be said of Sinatra, except that I do not particularly like him. Doesn't take anything away from their appeal or their achievements though.

Could never really get into him to be honest. Then you put me off him for life.

It doesn't really matter that he didn't write much music though, as you said he wasn't so much a musician as a singer and performer and he is rightly one of the greatest of all time.

He made many songs that had been written by other people his own, and when you hear those songs you don't think of the original songwriter, but of Elvis Presley.

No, I agree. He had great songwriters and when he covered other people's songs he'd generally do a superior version (Blue Suede Shoes for example - I also prefer his version of Something). His band was always packed with great musicians too.

Agreed 100%

Then we can forget about Frank Sinatra, too.

Yes we can.

Personality > Talent = Not worth being remembered as a musical legend for his musical talent.

Still......

wait for it, it builds....starting at 1.22...then 3.27...then 6.00...then...well, you'll get it.

Baring in mind how much I hate God and religion, it's honestly a miracle I like this so much.

I think this is the best version

Shame seeing the way he was n 1977, 'cos at his peak between '68 and '74 he was nearly as attractive as M13. I read that in 1973 he did 168 concerts, which is an insane amount really, and any man would struggle. It's a miracle he survived as long as he did considering the amount of drugs he was taking.

This always makes me laugh aswell

In terms of being a musician, which is what I said, then yes we can.

I never said that he couldn't be considered a great performing or vocal artist, I said that he can't be considered as a great musician.

If you think these people didn't do a tremendous amount to imbue the material with their own personalities, then you're on another planet.

Musically they didn't, that's the point, it was given to them on a plate to perform, so it's you that's on a different planet. It's like saying that Shirley Bassey is a great musician when she clearly isn't! She's a singer! If all of them had been provided with crap material to sing/perform, nobody would have ever heard of any of them.

All of this other planet is coming from you however, who made a Sheryl Crow tribute website.
