Ella Toone | meeting our new manager

Some frustrating miskicks when she tried to shoot a few times earlier in the match. But the goal was a screamer, well done to her

I think it would be wise of INEOS to show their commitment to having the best Women’s team by getting her future sorted if it’s not already

Yea, Mary ‘Wyatt’ Earps would be a great place to start.

+ Zelem, García, Parris. Think Zelem is the only one out of those four that will stay. Unless she has aspirations to experience another league before retirement.

Zelem won Serie A with Juventus before coming to United. She also won a WSL title (with Liverpool but we won't mention that).

Unless she fancies the US I think we'd still be her preference for as long as she's a key player/captain for us but who knows. The fact that she's taken on a role on the women's committee of the PFA makes me think she sees her future in England.

It is strange that we haven't heard anything confirmed though.

Yeah I know she’s played in Italy, just wondering if she wants one more new experience after being with us for six years. That PFA role is a good point though.

Could all be down to the new owners. Looks like a heavy rebuild. At least we might have some of the contingency planning already done with Tullis-Joyce, Naalsund and Miyazawa.

But once again our forward line needs something special, just like last summer.

Parris has the +1 extension, so if she leaves it should be for a decent price at least, if the US interest remains.

Build the team around her. I’d love to see us go all in for Miedema now we know she is leaving Arsenal. Especially if we lose some of our attacking players. Tooney pinging balls into her could work

Yes, sir! That is also what I have in mind since I read the news about Miedema leaving Arsenal. Ella is the cornerstone of this team and she deserves to be the one leading this team forward.

I saw this earlier today. When you say dreams can come true, it takes the meaning to a whole new level now.

This is exactly why Theatre of Dreams really is much more than just a tourist catch phrase.

Her story is amazing and yes however, I read that city are front runners for miedema which would only strengthen them unfortunately. When are we going to start going in for these players? Surely now we have a FA cup it’s time to start signing some of the big guns!

Her goal against Leicester is nominated as the WSL Goal of the Season. Vote here.

I voted for this goal earlier - it was another great one from Ella.

I love how she absolutely epitomises a Utd No. 7. Her shooting from distance is so good too, that we probably don't really even need a striker - just keep giving it to Ella at 25 yards out, I reckon that if she takes a shot every 5 minutes, we'll win!

Ella truly does belong in the collection of great United number 7s.

Best. Robson. Cantona. Beckham. Ronaldo. Toone.

50th cap tonight. Feels like a lot, feels like she just broke through to the England team. Speaks volumes about her availability and consistency.

It seems like an amazing number especially given she's still only 24 and she only made her debut in 2021. That was during Riise's brief stay as manager between Phil Neville's departure and Sarina Wiegman's arrival. She's been more or less an ever present as starter or sub for Wiegman.

She's scored 19 goals for them including goals in the QF SF and Final of the Euros in 22 - including a crucial goal against Spain to take it to extra time and the opening goal of the final against Germany.

Big game player Ella!

19 goals in 50 caps isn’t bad either. Especially when you consider they mainly consist of two major tournaments they reached the final in, the Finalissima as well as Nations League and Euro qualifiers against some very good teams.

One interesting thing is that Maya le Tissier and Ella Toone shared the players player of the year award last season. Now they've been named as captain and vice captain. I can't help but think that's a good sign.

That's a hard read. I hope her and her family and friends are able to find strength in each other as they grieve. RIP to Ella's dad.

I've been worried about Tooney. She was back on the pitch much sooner than I would have expected after her father's passing; that's got to be hard (and she has said as much). On the other hand, maybe that's the best thing she can do for herself; from what I know about her, playing football might truly be the best possible therapy for her. But, understandably, I think she hasn't looked quite like herself since then, and I wonder how long it will take her to fully feel like herself again and perform at the level we all (including herself) expect of her.

Presumably, the passage of time will heal, and hopefully she feels better as each week goes by. I think one of these weeks she is going to have a major breakout game and be the hero, but I just don't know how long that will take. With any luck it will against Arsenal tomorrow!

I get a little angry when I hear criticism directed at Ella Toone online. The trauma of losing her father will be very raw and we may not see the best of her for some time. I know united fans will be fully understanding but all media just need to give the kid a break.

I agree with that and it's still early days for her in terms of coping with the loss of her dad. All the worse because he'll have been the first face she looks for in the stand and the arm round her shoulder throughout her football life - as a kid and also as a full-time pro.

That said, she also started slow last season but ended the season by getting the opening goal on the Cup Final and with attacking stats to be proud of. You can see from her frustration with herself that she gets disappointed when she's not delivering her best. I think sometimes she actually gets worse reactions from the pundits because she looks so disappointed!

I just came across this video which explains in detail, with film clips and X's and O's, what I've been saying to anyone who would listen for some time. He clearly explains the unique skill set that makes her such a great player, but also why it often hasn't looked that way over the last year-and-a-half with United. (Spoiler alert: It's not her; it's her teammates.)
