Elanga vs Dan James

ATM Dan James, but when James was Elanga’s age he hadn’t even made his league debut.

This game suited Dan James to a tee - playing for a plucky underdog giving it all they've got. As usual mostly made bad decisions after impressive demonstrations of pace to get away from defenders

James has been a great asset for wales during the last 12-18 months, there isnt a chance Elanga would have anywhere near the same impact for us .

Elanga is not better by much (if at all) but he's also not worth the money we got from James.

If you want to complain, we got rid of James needlessly, talk to OGS who was aiming to create a geriatric front line.

James works hard for the team. You need such players. I still maintained that he was a very big reason we defeated all the big teams while he was with us. ( Not Arsenal)

Elanga really needs to tighten up his technique and his short passing game as both are sloppy.

if Dan James was that good, United wouldnt have let him go and Leeds wouldnt have sent him out on loan. He is fast but thats where it ends. His general play, passing, crossing and decision making is average at best and often poor. Frustrating player.
Elanga is well down in the pecking order at united behind Anthony, Garnacho, Rashford and sancho.his confidence is low... hes a decent player who would do well at another club and its in his best interest to move on.

Ideally we could sell Elanga for similar money we got for James. Same with DVB, Henderson and AWB and there's the funds for a new striker.

Elanga not good enough for us unfortunately.

Dan James must be one of the dumbest players i have ever watched at United in terms of decision making. Glad he was sold. Elanga showed balls that no first teamer did at a time when we where struggling big time. Is he good enough to be a starter for us? No, of course not. Impact player? Maybe not even that but he deserved his chance and i hope he goes on to have a decent career.

"Elanga vs Dan James".

It's taken several years, but I think we have finally reached the bottom of the barrel when it comes to these versus threads.

James wasn't good enough and was rightly moved away, same thing will happen with Elanga. Both fast hard working players but it takes a lot more to make it.

I don't think Elanga will be here in 2 years, it's just that the squad is short at the moment and we need bodies.

Do we have a Buttner vs Williams thread yet?

Dan James up to the final third is the better player. He does all the hard work and then gets it all wrong.

Elanga has better technique and ball control; better in the air.
James is quicker and works harder.
Both are bad at passing, crossing and shooting.

I vote Elanga. Hopefully he continues to work and improve though.

Elanga is still young enough to improve in quite a few areas. He'll never be top level technically but his mentality can make up for a lot. I remember watching Henry when Arsenal got him from Juventus and thinking....he's nothing special. Fast-forward a few years he was unbelievable. Elanga is going through second season syndrome so he looks worse right now but he was pretty decent last season. He will always be a nice option off the bench or we can sell to raise funds for a striker.

I think the point is we saw what we had coming through in Elanga and thought that cashing in on James at £25m allowed us to both keep the same profile of player in the squad and turn a profit on a player who didn’t look like he would elevate his game any further. It feels like Elanga has a bit higher ceiling, as well.

Yup. Neither one is good enough to play for this club. James was rightfully sold. His decision making and final ball were awful. Leeds even loaned him out because he's that bad. I have no idea how we scammed £25m out of them. Elanga will also be sold within the next couple years. He should be on loan for a Championship team, but since we lack options, he's stayed here as backup.

Behind Sancho, no not for me on recent form, I would have them 'level-pegging'.
For me neither player seems able to move on beyond their 'party-pieces' and once defenders have suss'd that out, they are simply making up the numbers, both are falling into the Lingard, 'playing without the ball' role.
Sancho might improve if he had a Mata type player 'passing and moving' alongside him (or even a resurgent DVB!). Elanga's all about speed and half turn ability, but like Rashford and Martial before him he's slipped into that "I want the ball to feet'.

Are we really comparing a 20 year old vs 25 year old. Dan James was a nothing player at Elanga's age.. Time will tell but Elanga needs gametime to develop so ultimately he might reach "only" Jameses level if he stagnates for few more seasons but he has a higher potential. Obviously getting few minutes here and there won't really help him with his confidence and development into a better player.
