EFL Trophy - Morecambe vs Manchester United

Pellistri and Mengi, how are they doing? They are supposed to be closest to the first team I guess.
Pellistri is a mile off ready for first team. Maybe this time next year. Struggling with physicality.

Mengi struggled today. Im a huge fan of his but Fish looked more composed today

Fair to say the future is not bright. We seem to have wasted a lot of money and time on young players who will never be good enough.
Why do you bother coming into youth forum when you don't watch youth football? We have lots of talent and there's a few of these will become proper top first team footballers.

Poor from the boys all in all. McCann and Fish looked the best of a bad lot. They had obviously scouted us much better than we scouted them and they kept doing in swingers with the wind. We didn't try one in swinger and it did my head in! Their physicality definitely was the difference maker.

Thought we had a golden generation of youth? How do they lose 4-0 to this team?!

Like clockwork... Only 7 of the 16 Prem teams in the competition progressed to the knockouts. Likes of Chelsea among those who didn't. Bad night at the office tonight but, as ever, one bad outing (especially one against senior opposition) isn't cause to go all chicken licken.

Most of us thought last years team was a golden generation to be fair. Greenwood and Williams got called up. Gomes left, Kovar, Chong, Garner and Levitt are out on loan and Laird is regularly injured.

I think this current group is incredibly talented though but they were crap today. Definitely missed Galbraith who is on International duty and Elanga who was on the bench with a minor knock.

You're more than free to form your own opinions on these players by watching them, than take for granted what other posters say then get all snarky when they don't live up to your expectations.

Like @JoeyJoJoJrShabadoo said, this team isn't as good as our previous U23 team, most of our best players from that team have left the club either permanently, are on loan, are with the first team or are perennially injured. Puigmal, for example, was the 4th best midfielder in that team and is now a consistent starter due to better players like Garner and Levitt going out on loan to play in competitive leagues. The excitement comes from a crop of immensely talented U18s, many of which are still 16-17 and finding their feet. I seem to remember you bringing up Willy Kambwala a number of times in the main forum, even referring to him as "Big Willy", so don't act like it's just youth watchers who've been hyping up the academy. Just like senior football, it will take time to see the best of them and they deserve patience which they seem to be getting less and less of from the "casual" youth watchers. This was always going to be a transitional year.

Apparently they are all 10 year olds playing against Barcelona's first team.
Morecambe have played 12 league games plus Cup games so far this season, our u23s have played 9 altogether, Morecambe are clearly fitter and sharper. Give our lads a chance to find their feet, a couple have recently been promoted from younger age groups and Pellistri was playing his 2nd game.

How come Fernandez was on the bench? Believe he has started brightly from recent reports.

Also how did Mejbri deal with the physicality if the mens game?

I heard that in the Chelsea game and they had some players who were 16.
It was a team with an average age of 18 against a team with an average age of over 27. Even apart from the players who are on loan we were without 4/5 players who would be guaranteed starters if they were available & in some positions also missing the first choice backup player. The Chelsea team you're talking about are out of this competition after finishing bottom of a group containing Walsall, Bristol Rovers & Oxford United. If you don't have the slightest idea about our youth or youth football in general then you might be better off just not commenting on it rather than spouting clueless bullshit & making snarky comments & just showing up how clueless you are.

You’re just making yourself sound even more of a prat to be honest.

Oh i forgot to add any sort of criticism whatsoever of these players when they lose just means you are clueless and know nothing.

Clearly all superstars of the future.

For the record i don't watch much of this present crop as i really do not rate them which has not been the case in years gone by.

I have watched a lot of our youth teams

Too many of them have been way overrated and you can even see that in thd way they believe as they believe their own hype.

We might get very lucky and have one of them come through but i would be absolutely shocked if any more make it

Well, if you had watched any youth football you would know not to come in judging players off the feck all you seen of them. It's a real shame as the youth forum mostly been a fairly reasonable place as the rest of the caf has gone downhill with posters trying to out do each other with the most extreme take. Yet you come in here pronouncing death sentences on players careers like some neo nostradamus, while having seen them play for less than 180 minutes. It represents the very worst of this forum, opinions formed at the drop of a hat without any thought for nuance or circumstance.

Surely if you are this Oracle of youth talent that you claim to be, seeing as you don't rate this crop despite not having seen them play as you previously admitted, you would recognise these players will be inconsistent in their nature and won't be anywhere near the finished article. Many players will develop at different rates, and of course all won't make the grade however it's possible 1 or 2 will and that's all you can ever hope for from any youth team.

Nail on head.

Why the hell the youth forum has already been degraded to this bs moaning and trashtalking everytime we lost a game?

Where were those when we spanked the U18s league leader 4-1 just last week?

Pellistri clearly needs more time, I would suggest letting him train and play more with the 23s to build up confidence. Doesn't help that he got paired up with Neville.

You have no idea what you're talking about. You're being called clueless because you admitted you don't watch this team which literally does make you clueless. I don't know what your goal was, you came into this thread levelling criticism at a team you don't watch then painted yourself the victim when you got called out for it. Hopefully more people wise up to your garbage and keep you on ignore, you have the outstanding ability to ruin any thread you're a part of.

Of course no one should be not a bit angry about result but every match in this competition is good for our team and we are in the next round (after a 6-0 win against a League Two side and a draw after 90 minutes against a League One side).

The score line flattered Morecambe IMO. We were the better team for the first 23 minutes and were controlling the game and looked comfortable. It was a mad 10 minutes from the 24th minute to the 34th minute that changed the whole complexion of the game. A 10 minute phase where we shot ourselves in the foot with some very poor defending starting with the first goal which was easily avoidable. And then the second goal was awful from our part and by then we were rattled and Morecambe gained confidence. We didn't lose the game because the opposition were physically stronger than us but rather our own sloppiness cost us the game. If we play the same opposition again I would back our lads to win the game. But having said that, it's sometimes good to be humbled in such a way because you learn more from such defeats which is a good learning curve.

Mejbri I thought played well for us and was probably the best player on the pitch even if we lost 4-0.

Cheers for this, I'm guessing Mejbri dealt with the step up in physicality well then?

Any ides why Fernandez was on the bench after starting brightly? Hoping he didn't have a knock of some sort

Devine’s pretty good, I don’t think we’ll be in any rush to force him out of the team. Knowing the recent pattern of promotions Fernandez will probably get a more permanent place in the U23 team in January when we’ll likely send Devine on loan.

Mejbri is more than fine physically IMO. He just needs to channel his frustration in a positive way at times which will come in time.

Fernandez was left on the bench because we have another game coming up on Sunday against Spurs according to Neil Wood, so he was rested for that game is my understanding from what I heard from Neil Wood.

What did Neil Wood say after the game?

He was asked about some of the players that were left on the bench and his response was that he wanted to rest a few players due to the game on Sunday against Spurs which is just around the corner now.

Thanks to you both.

Adnan I expected him to be fine, but it's good to know that reality met expectation.

The kids were passive in the first half, no pressure whatsoever on the ball. Wham 3-0 down at halftime.
A couple of the goals their players just waltzed into the penalty area! terrible 'defending'. Could've been more for Morecambe tbh
All part of the learning process in their development for the united boys i guess.... Last night they got outfought by a stronger more determined team.

Yea that was poor. Don’t think we created a half decent chance all match. Midfield is completely invisible defensively, as they have been most of the season. It’s a real concern, the back line are consistently left exposed with the opposition given free licence to run at them over and over again. The second goal was particularly embarrassing.

was surprised to see Neville starting - was that for rotation? Would like to see Laird playing behind Pellistri at some stage.

Pellestri looked confident enough to me. Maybe a little too comfortable but generally was fine on the ball. Probably needs a fair bit of work on what he does off the ball and be more aggressive. But he's a young lad a long way from home with loads to learn so a slower approach is no biggie.
