Eduardo Camavinga / signs for Real Madrid

A couple older articles showing that our interest in him is longstanding

His stats the season prior were remarkable for a 17 year old

So what type of midfielder is this kid? Never seen him play.

Don't get me wrong, I'm aboard the hype train - but need to know where to slot him in my imaginary starting 11

To confuse you even more, this is how an article described him.
The 18-year old is not a pure Volante, given his abilities and role in the current Rennes system. The Angolan-born prodigy is incredibly versatile and is a mixture of the World Cup-winning French troika of Paul Pogba, Blaise Matuidi, and Ngolo Kante, capable of playing each of their roles. His playing style is also comparable to that of the former Real Madrid man Xabi Alonso and even the Dutch legend Frank Rijkaard himself.

Basically, he's just an all-action midfielder, it's hard to put him in one box, he does everything so well. You can stick him next to Fred in your lineup.

I do wonder if this push means we're resigned to losing Pogba on a free or he's planning to move this summer.

Well we know it's going to be 80 for Sancho, Varane and Camavinga will be in the area of 50 each (as far as can be told) and then there are signing-on bonuses and such, so to me I think "in the area of 200 million" makes some sense. But it's just a question of how specific one wants to make the assumption.

Bolded part: Really? Do you remember where? The only figure I've seen is that the transfer budget was 85m, but I can't remember where I read that. Would be nice (and also more consistent with what seems to be going on) if that was right.

Sancho is 73m, the other two around 50m, you'd expect. It's a big difference having to get rid of 1/2 players rather than 4/5 to raise the extra funds. Unless we sell a big name of course.

ESPN were the ones to report 150m net early in the window.

73m for Sancho is our current offer, unless I'm much mistaken? The final sum by all accounts will be higher than that. Signing-on bonuses comes out of the transfer funds. And there's no guarantee either Varane or Camavinga can be had for 50m, it may well be 54 or 57 or whatever. So to me it makes more sense to think in vaguer magnitudes rather than exact figures. But no matter, we have largely the same expectations.

@NoLogo

I like Camavinga he's got great potential, but Sanches would be a huge flop here.

Rice is very overrated and for the money I don't think he's anywhere near worth it. Obviously we need another option with both Pogba and Matic potentially leaving soon, but I really don't think he's the answer.

I think with Renato all will depend on if he can get more consistency in his performances, so yeah not a 100% nailed on player but I think he is something our midfield is sorely missing, has a great drive forward, works hard defensively and can carry a ball quite well but he is a high risk player no doubt and as long as we have Bruno and vdB there is probably no place for him in the team.

Exciting times. It seems like we are targeting the right sort of players finally

Camavinga, Jadon and Varane beats the summer of Nani/Anderson/Hargreaves in 07 for me, if we can do it

This seems like a decent bit of analysis:

From the little I've seen, he is very comfortable on the ball, can pick a pass but can also tackle like AWB. That might sound too good to be true but he really does have the potential to play almost any midfield role. He's seriously gifted.

I wouldn't risk Renato, his performances in the Euros may have been above his station.

I’m not sure why he can’t play as a DM? I look at his youtube highlights and he was tackling everywhere like AWB. Maybe his positioning needs more work and that’ll come with experience. I know he’s an all action midfielder but if we want him to solely protect the back four, i think he can do it really well but perhaps we will negate the rest of his abilities if we only play him as a DM, which is a waste of his talent

He looks physically suited to any midfield role. Whether he could mould his game to be a deep-lying playmaker a la Carrick would be interesting to see.

Hope we get him. I love us being linked with the best young starlets in football. I'd love it if in 4-5 years (when Pogba has probably left and Fred has waned) we bring Bellingham back to the island and have a midfield of Camavinga, Bellingham and Mejbri along with the older guard of Bruno, McTominay and Fred.

Positioning comes with experience as you said, if he specialises in the deeper role and gets played there a lot he will build it up no doubt.

His all-action style might be curbed as a result but if he develops his playmaking abilities he will be better for it. There's literally dozens of high quality all action midfielders and very few that can play the Pirlo/Carrick/Busquets/etc. role adequately. The only young-ish players I see that are definites for that kind of role are Locatelli and F. De Jong. Demand for such players is insane, salaries are high and because it's not a position that requires a lot of legs they have long careers too. All the players I mentioned lasted till their mid-30s comfortably.

Sancho will be min 80 mill probably a bit more all told add ons etc

He's seemingly evolved from a DM mainly early on into a box to box type CM but he's still had experience with having the responsibility of covering the back line so he could definitely play there if needed. His strong tackling/ball winning ability and rate really stands out.

It's just that he's so gifted on the ball that the deep lying playmaker/regista role would probably be the best use of his skill/talent.

He absolutely is. He's not £50m better than Mctominay, let alone £90m. Hope we never sign him.

@kouroux I'm surprised by how indifferent you seem to be toward the player, what is it that you're underwhelmed with in him?

I guess you watch Ligue 1, so are more used to these prodigies we get to hear about some way down the line - what is the regard for Camavinga in France as a whole (pundits and press)?

Who is he being compared to, next... Tigana? Or is that not a thing in France?

How is his first touch and shielding of the ball? I have watched highlights and the game he played for France which will not show his true game.

Camavinga and Varane, two Frenchmen with real talent, might well encourage Pogba to stay, imo.

Varane, Camavinga, Sancho, takes our team to another level.
Would be great if we could land all 3 of them. Realistically that could cost us a lot though, no sure we could afford them all this summer.
- Sancho 90m
- Varane 50m?
- Camavinga 70m?

Ha ha.

More like

Sancho - 77m
Varane - 45m
Camavinga - 50m

It's still a lot but if we can offset by selling Dalot (15m), Lingard (25m), Pereira (5m), maybe even Bailly (20m)

Then we can offset a big chunk of it and still be in the clear. In any case, it's all pretty much academic as I don't think we're going to get Camavinga and I'm still a little unsure re Varane too.

People saying they are confused because we need an all out DM and not a cm... I'm confused, we know how old plays, he isn't trying to 'unlock pogba' as per fantasies, we wants a double pivot but obviously needs upgrades on Fred and Scott

I don't think it should be a lot. Varane has no resale obviously but the other two are safe bets at those prices. We spent nothing last summer. I really hope we could make three moves like this without relying on offsets. I get your point but I just hope it isn't that way.

Did he not play as a DM in his debut season, it was only last season when he was played as a box to box player. I really don't think playing him in a Matic like role would be that difficult to do. He has all the tools, and unlike Matic has plenty of energy and pace to cover ground.

I think if there is a chance, we should go for it.

Didn’t we get Tevez on loan that year as well?

Don't get me wrong, he is promising but I can already see the signs that are similar with Pogba on the caf. Basically expecting too much from a kid who is very inconsistent still. Man Utd need ready made players, specially in midfield.
We need someone who is physically mature, Camavinga is a baby and would be a long term project.

Whom would you suggest instead?

Simply put, if there’s a chance to sign him, we should. He’s a generations talent in the same way Sancho is. Signing two in one window is a serious shot in the arm for our future. Pair those two with Greenwood, Rashford, Diallo and Hannibal, who are all under 23, and we have a very sustainable outlook for the next 8-10 yrs.

A summer of two exciting players (Sancho and Camavinga) and an experienced winner in Varane would truly be a dream.

That’s my view as somehow that’s had a casual interest in Rennes for the last decade or so. If we had a fully functional midfield he would be a brilliant buy, but with the current state of it, he won’t be one to come in and fix our shortcomings in the upcoming season.

Granted he is a prospect for the longer term, how do you rate him as a player and does he look like the real deal to you? I can understand your point of view from the pressure and personality aspects, but I am wondering what you think of him as an actual player as my impression there is that you're not particularly enamoured, which might be wrong of me.

This lad is the real deal. We should do everything we can to sign him, 18 years old and would be a massive upgrade on what we have in that CDM postion. His skill, passing, tackling and dribbling are brilliant. His timing in the tackle is amazing for his age too as well as his football IQ. Sign him up FFS

So what's the deal...do we actually have a real shot of getting him?

I don't see Ole buying someone that will immediately boot out McFred though. More like someone who can push them, rotate and improve in the future.
