Eduardo Camavinga / signs for Real Madrid

He's box-to-box, isn't he? He is really good at dribbling and scores quite a few goals. I'm not sure you'd want to play him in midfield with Pogba and Bruno, especially when he's about 18 and new to the league - he'd get swamped. For this season we need a really confident sitter, someone who could play next to Pogba in easier games and cover the whole of midfield.

I'd love to sign Camavinga, but I just think he is too similar to players we already have in the squad, and spending loads on him now would not be good for the balance of the squad. He might make a good replacement for/long term upgrade on McTominay, but we're not selling Scott and we have too many midfielders already.

What reason is there for the midfield to have Pogba in it is I would have to ask, what has he done in all is time here to justify playing in that pivot. You could argue virtually any midfielder signed could be swamped in that midfield. I think the "play next to Pogba in easier games and cover the whole of midfield" kind of says it all really, Pogba for me either plays fighting it on the left spot with Rashford and we dont bloody accomodate Rashford on the right, or he fights it out for Fernandes position....or you sell him.

Out of interest which players do you think Camavinga is similar to that we already have?

Pogbas future is pretty much on the dark, there's a 50-50 chance he is outbound, which will make this signing a no-brainer. Camavinga has the potential to surpass everything that pogba has done in a united shirt, we should be looking at him playing alongside a proper DM with Bruno upfront. Let's go for the DM first, though, if we sort that out properly and still have money left then go for this guy

Why not go all in on young French midfielders and get Aurelien Tchouameni along with him?

Fred I suppose given he’ll probably end up playing the same role but he’ll be much better on the ball than Fred once he gets up to speed. He’s simply the best young midfielder prospect in Europe given his CL and international experience. France and England are producing some of the very best youth at the moment and Camavinga might just be the jewel in the crown when it comes to midfielders. Camavinga and Rice is potentially the best midfield in Europe. if that is something Ole can see working long term then maybe let rices deal run down another season. We should play the long game with English players and wait until their contracts are getting dodgy like Sancho this summer. Let the player start agitating for the move. It’ll be cheaper.

how many clubs will be in for him though given his contract situation?

I suspect there’s a lot of competition.

Bayern and Real are the 2 most often mentioned but Real are broke and need other positions more urgently, Bayern are transfer dons though so we'll have our work cut out.

Both Real and Juve have financial difficulties. I don’t think Real have paid a $ of transfer fee over the last 12 months and in fact sold a bunch of players to raise funds. Juventus still have to pay the fee for Chiesa and Morata to make their moves permanent.

I'm intrigued to see what happens with him. His agent is Jonathan Barnett who has a plethora of his clients on our books, so if we're interested i'm sure we would've touched base with him already.

Just doesn't seem like the kind of player we'd sign. There's been no real links either.

Watch us sign someone more limited if we do :(

It looks pretty clear by now Pogba is not suited to playing in the pivot. Hence, we should not be looking for a defensive specialist to cover for a more offensive no 8, but someone who is a better all-rounder than either McTominay or Fred. Camavinga seems to me to fit that description.

Bayern could make it happen financially (especially when selling Tolisso) and they have a lot of French players which is probably attractive to Camavinga. He would not be a starter though which might exclude Bayern from his list.

That's our biggest advantage, whichever midfielders we buy they should all feel confident of walking into the team as it's the weakest part of our squad.

 why are people this stupid

Rennes is about Fred’s level. Camavinga only has a year left on contract and looks like he’s not signing a new contract.

Surely not the worst idea in the world.

Also, whatever happened to, ‘critique the post not the poster’?

First of all Camavinga plays for Rennes, Lille are the top of Ligue 1 ahead of PSG. i’m questioning your judgement.

It’s a very reactionary opinion, fred has been very good for us over the last 2 years. yes he made a mistake against liverpool but everybody was poor.

People just don’t recognise the hard work he gives the team. He covers for Rashford on the left who doesn’t defend, he’s marking 2 players at once. He’s always the first one to press and his energy makes a big difference to why we can keep the pressure up late into matches.

Yes he needs to tidy up a bit on the ball and stop the ‘brain farts’ but he’s the least of our issues.

It's a great idea but I doubt Rennes would go for it as Camavinga is their biggest asset, they'll want to get as much money as possible in a transfer auction. Plus I doubt Fred will accept going to Rennes.

Firstly Fred is much better than mid-table French league. Secondly they couldn't afford his wages.

He plays for Rennes not Lille. There's a big difference between the level of those 2 clubs currently. So that's the first problem.

Secondly there's no indication that Fred would be willing to drop to such a lower level of club right now. This is ignoring that fact it'd massively overplayed how poor he is. He certainly has a role to play at our club.

But isn't there for pretty much every top talent in the world? Sancho goes into his last year as well in the summer, I'm pretty sure his agent has already 20+ contract offers in his mailbox. Same probably goes for Haaland at least next summer and Bellingham will probably be next just like all the other talents I don't have in mind right now.

That's the reason why I was so adamant for a long time that we need a director of football who is not just good at finding the right players but also getting the right deals done in a market that is hard to navigate.

Sancho still has 2 years remaining on his contract.

sancho has 2 years left on his contract.

the point is that when players get down to the last year of their contract, then of course more clubs can afford them, and it brings competition from clubs who were not in a position to buy them on a long contract.

in terms of sancho - we pretty much have a free run at him because of his contract.

Ah alright, well that will make him quite a bit more expansive than I thought if we go for him in the summer.

Interest will probably still be there from pretty much every top club but there are way less clubs who will be able to afford him.

Tolisso is injured and injury-prone, would be very difficult to offload him.

Fred probably earns more than half their squad combined. It’s not rocket science to work out why a swap deal like that would never happen. The post was pure lunacy, I’m amazed anyone would even suggest it.

Is Camavinga really so good that he can slot straight into our midfield and be expected to perform? He's only 18 and plays in the French league, I'm sure he's talented but it seems like a big ask. Not that I wouldn't like to sign him mind

The wage of a player doesn’t objectively mark their value (Lingard is reportedly on more than Bruno). Can anyone agree that Fred is truly worth the £47m we paid for him and the wage we’ve paid him?

Using a club as an example, where would you place Fred’s value?

He’s certainly not going to do any worse than McTominay over the past few months. I think the bar is still set quite low. It shouldn’t be a problem.

No guarantees anybody can, especially coming from another league. I think needs to be considered he has played 65+ games already for his club though, so the age isnt such a big issue.....Fred had played under 40 games more for Shaktar over 5 seasons and was in his mid twenties by then. He is also playing for the full France Squad.

For me forget the age and look at the experience. He has as much as Phil Foden, Mason Mount, Mason Greenwood. Wesley Fofana who are all older and pretty much any club in the world would like them at there club. And we are talking about £50m with his contract situation, wouldnt buy any of the afore mentioned players, its a good deal.....I think the competition will be fierce to sign him though

My biggest gripe with him is he’s in love with madrid so would be looking to leave soon enough. You can bet they would be linked to him every window

I would say his wage demands will thin out the crowd pretty quickly. Only really us city Chelsea, the Spanish who are broke and Bayern and possibly Juve can afford him. The strongest links seem to be with Bayern at the moment. I’m pretty sure they’ll just announce it any day now like Upamecano, unlike us they seem to be happy to work on deals during the season.

I think that is indeed the question, because if he isn't he may not be the solution in this particular case and at this particular time, however good he may become in the long run.

However, given that he's got caps for France, the answer may very well be "yes".

We've got Pogba though ;)

Who is a model for you in professional football?

I am inspired by Paul Pogba. He is a very good player with great qualities. He proved himself in the French national team, you just have to look at what he did, world champion. But I don’t like comparisons much.

Even if this was true, surely you want someone like Camavinga next to him then?
