Two sitters but at least he gets in the 6 yard box to attempt them.
Did you say that also when we had Welbeck on our books?:-) Seriously today was a bad luck for him but people shouldn't feel that every chance has to go in. Martial had a half chance to get on the end of a ball today if he had Cavani's instincts. Lazy fecker.

Disappointing. Had the chances to win the match. His movement inside the box is his main strength. Makes a change to have someone on the end of crosses into dangerous areas. Another 3 crosses that he almost got a touch to.

Presumably it’s something to do with the important goals he’s scored. Plus his amazing work-rate and clever movement. His good all round performances probably a factor do.

Has the world gone mad?!?
I don’t really see that though, Pogue. He’s not a good finisher and never has been. Since Understat has collected data, he has underperformed his xG. He’s very much a volume striker. He works hard, but you wouldn’t have him near your team if you didn’t as he’s not particularly incisive. Today was Cavani in a nutshell.

Let’s be honest: he’s come in for squad depth and has found himself first choice as Martial has bottomed out. United desperately need a bonafide CF who actually wants to play for the club in the summer. If not, we can write next season off too.

Feck me. Turning on Cavani after missing those two chances comes close to a new caf low. Bruno and Poga missed decent chances against Liverpool. That’s what a bad miss looks like. Cavani’s misses today weren’t even close to being as easy. I doubt they’d even make the top 10 of easy misses already this season.

We shouldn't be turning on him and he should still be first choice up front, but he was poor today. It wasn't just the chances he missed, his general play and touch was poor. Hope he bounces back soon.

He should score the first one. 2nd one was tough and was behind him

...

We are doomed if our forwards form doesn't drastically improve in the coming weeks

First one wasn’t easy. Cedric was so close he could only play the ball back the way it came. Which gave him very little to aim at. Plus it was hit hard at hum from not very far away.
I never said it was easy. I said he should score. After watching it again he is infront of Cedric so he should definitely score

This isn’t turning on Cavani, because I was indifferent to him from the start. He’s here on mega wages and needs to be a justifying them with the performances of a striker competing for the golden boot. Because he’s a contrast to Le Sulk v2.0, people are becoming overboard with their assessment of him.

Contrary to popular belief, I don’t think he’s had a particularly good start to his United career. He wasn’t fit to start the season, he’s been injured, he’s got himself banned for some unwise social media conduct, and he’s put in some utterly dreadful performances too. Because he scored a couple at Southampton we’re supposed to revere him?

United need to think long and hard about keeping him around next season, because he isn’t good enough to be our preferred centre forward.

Jesus Christ

Just to be clear, I’d start Cavani in every game at the moment, but that’s more indicative of A) Martial being so indifferent in form and attitude right now, and B) still having no senior right wing option other than Mason who we are obliged to play there by default.

That doesn’t mean I can quite appreciate why Cavani is getting such praise from sections of the media and particular pundits. He’s been pretty average, albeit hard-working, from my perspective.

Cavani has got good workrate and looks like his positioning is very decent too. He's fast and shoots fast. Problem is his finishing is not that clinical as he doesn't think much and just shoot.

You should check out his PSG days and look at all his 'horrendous misses' compilation.

That he's getting so much praise in the media is more a reflection of our other front men than it is his overall ability.

He's a seasoned pro who knows how to play the no. 9 role which is something we clearly lack and therefore he stands out. however he's never been exactly prolific, indeed there was a period when he's finishing ability was something of a joke at psg (if cavani had shot 2pac he'd still be alive)

Id still start him in most games because just having someone making the required runs helps the full backs to actually carry out their attacking responsibilities.

The emphasis for me is on Marcus, martial and Greenwood to exploit the space he creates short term and also to learn how to move like him long term. They all have the potential to be better finishers than him but they've got to do the work

Missed 2 clear goal scoring chances. I like his work rate but his general play isn’t great, if he’s going to start missing golden chances like that regularly I’m not sure he’s worth starting.

Based on one game? He's our best striker by a country mile - at 33 years old.
Cost us the game.

Not true at all. I'd say that falls to Rashford's selfishness and childish awareness on the pitch.

First one he should score but I've seen him miss chances like that for PSG, still should score

Second is much harder and martial needs to be more vocal as he's in a better position

He's the only one who moves in the box for us which is frustrating as we put in some good crosses but our players are just static or don't get into the box
Also there are times he makes great runs but isn't played in, think Rashford and awb had chances and just decide to cut back

He has no right to be furious with Rashford for not passing the ball to him if he keeps missing chances like that himself

Excessive use of smilies

Xg for the chances:-

Pogba v Liverpool 0.38

Cavani 2nd chance 0.42

Bruno v Liverpool 0.49

Cavani 1st Chance 0.65

Bizarrely You Claimed Pogbas chance as one that should be scored 9/10.

*Only in the warped reality of the Pogue would you get Pogue arguing - completely seriously - that the chance Cavani missed was actually very difficult to score from* quote

You’ll struggle to find a better chance missed this season than an open goal from the middle of the goal, four yards out. It’s a sitter.

The quality of a chance cannot be determined by how much you like/dislike a player.

Well it can in your head obviously....but not in the real world.

You can use fancy stats all you like, but if you need to be told that Cavani chance was harder than pogba or Bruno’s you need your head checking. It was literally a 5 yard tap in and he ended up missing the goal, it was harder to miss! He’s just lucky it brushed the keepers arm on the way out as everybody thought the defender got to it first.

Pogba's one surely wasn't as bad a miss. I'm not having a go here I love the guy but he was 5 yards out with practically no keeper in. Was a beautiful move from Shaw Fred and Martial as well so a shame it didn't go in

There's a difference between missing a chance or two or making the wrong decision constantly

To be fair if anything Cavani finishing has been out of character since joining us. He’s always been someone who misses sitters in front of goal but gets himself enough chances to score lots of goals. Uruguayan Andy Cole.

Cavani has always missed chances. His strengths are his movement, stength and work rate. It's probably what kept him from being one of the absolute best.

He’s better than the martial of this season (not hard really) but he’s levels below the martial of the 6 months at the end of last season.
Agree with this.

Movement is superb. Certainly should have scored those two chances, but I can't really get angry with him.

He’s in front of Cedric FFS
It’s an awful miss let’s not try to defend it

The first one was a bad miss but the others were half chances

I think he might have been a bit overhyped so far but his movement and workrate are a great addition. He was obviously bought to be backup and think he has looked better coming of the bench than in his starts but martials form means he isnt an option

He would obviosly have a few more goals to date if mason, martial and Marcus would get their head up once in a while

Read what I said. Cedric was right beside him. Without Cedric there he could open his body up and direct it anywhere in the goal. Because Cedric was there he had a smaller area of the goal to aim for. It was also hit at him hard and he had to take it first time. He should have scored but we’ve seen plenty much easier chances missed this season. By top strikers at other clubs, as well as at our own.

This was my opinion of him when we announced the signing of him.

You need to look at it again , he’s 1st to the ball any power directed towards the goal and it’s a certain goal . Cedric isn’t blocking it. He’s connected with the ball poorly and it’s a bad miss

I really don’t care what your opinion was. Everyone knew he wasn’t known for being a clinical finisher. Doesn’t change the fact we’ve had many worse misses than that one this season. All teams have.

Considering the goals he has scored already this season Cavani’s contributions in front of goal are far from being an issue we need to worry about.

This sums up how fecking stupid xG is as a stat more than anything.

There is absolutely no chance that strikers are popping in Cavani's second chance 4/10; it's ridiculously difficult technique and he's done well to make good contact on it. Just because 4/10 shots from there on the pitch go in doesn't suddenly make the individual chance easy.

The first one is inexcusable though, it's a very poor miss.
