Falcao was a different type of player. Cavani can hold the ball and bring others into play. If he is playing he can hold the ball better than anyone we have right now. Of Ole plays Martial a bit closer to him when they play together he is going to create chances.

We don't play a system that necessitates this type of striker. We moved away from the stereotypical big man that holds the ball up, when we sold Lukaku and moved Martial up top. We seemed to be trying to build a fluid interchangeable front line, but then we go and buy a 33 year old sick-note that hasn't played in 7 months, who is as rigid and one dimensional as they come.

To be honest, I think Ole had nothing at all to do with this transfer. This reeks of Woodward and the other clowns trying to placate the fans, by bringing in what they perceive as an iconic and legendary player on a free. Let me repeat: He's 33 years old, was contemplating retirement, hasn't played in 7 months, and when he did play was utter dog shit with far better players around him, in a far less competitive league.

This is as underwhelming signing as we could possibly make. Our new number 7

Hope he does well but I have my doubts. I also can’t believe he’s got the number 7 shirt that number is completely tarnished at this club now.

Haha. This is gonna be hilarious once we realize how much better Cavani still is than all of our other strikers.
Seriously he will teach them all a thing or two and the difference in quality will immediately be obvious. People really think Martial is as good as him? Haha. You will see how far our players are from being world class.

Ok so the guy is 33. In great shape a hard worker. Didnt have a career ending injury or anything like that. Why are people expecting that we are getting a player that cant play anymore?

He had a hip injury and other niggling injuries all throughout last year and hasn't played competitive football in 7 months. He struggled in Uber Eats league against inferior opposition with far better players supporting him than the dross he has around him at United.

In a way it may work. Cavani has the nous to play in orthodox positions and has great movement in and outside of the box.

it may force your Rashfords/Brunos/whoever plays on the right wing to actually try and create as opposed to being individual attacking threats.

I said it about Ighalo too. These 'types' of strikers make sense because their discipline/gravitation toward the penalty box gives us a focus.

Martial has improved a lot but Ole's system is basically let them all play interchanging free-for-all football. He's not got the coaching ability or tactics to make that work and as a result we're streaky as feck when it comes to combination plays or any sort of fluidiy.

He's a great header of the ball too. We can actually spam crosses into the box with some success hopefully.

The less pressure attached to that shirt, the better. Everyone that's inherited it since Ronaldo has been a disaster.

Hope Cavani does well. I look forward to seeing his movement at United. One of the most enjoyable things about watching him at his prime was just how insane his movement was.

Excited to see him in the shirt to be honest. I love Martial, but Cavani is going to change the dynamic of the front line, which will be refreshing. I think Bruno and VDB will be able to spot the runs he makes - heck, even Pogba if he can be bothered.

Lukaku is awful at holding the ball up so arguably we moved away from that when we replaced Ibrahimovic with him. Though that didn't stop Mourinho from trying to use Lukaku as a stereotypical big man at number nine.

I think can be a good plan B to throw in when it doesn’t work with the other attackers, as he is different from them. Also the only one who is a threat in the air.

Fitness is a question yes.
But rigid and one dimensional? Clearly you haven’t watched him. His off the ball movement and running the channels is great. He’s also played wing lots. So rigid and one dimensional he is not

We need to take the huge expectations off the number anyway. If someone takes it and is another great, then great, add them to the list. If not, doesn't matter.

World class player when fit and will take anyone's place. Let's hope he'll spend more time on the field than on the physio room.

I know I'm slow but I hadn't realised it was a one year deal and now that's sunk in I'm a bit more optimistic, in the sense that we've not much to lose really, with a chance of a lot to gain. Get fit and do well matey.

I think theres an option for the 2nd year as well.

Yeah but the option is ours. And if he is on 175K a week salary, that isn't too bad. Lets hope for the best.

I think a few will be surprised at Cavani's work rate, he's a proper grafter.

That's really the biggest thing Im looking forward to. Clearly PSG favored his work rate over Ibra's which to me is a good sign. Its also the part Ole focused on in his comments about him. Just wish we could have gotten him after RvP left.

Hope he's more Ibrahimovic than Higuain.

Saying that though he's the type of striker that has good movement and creates chances for himself - rather than waiting for the ball to come to him.

Scored bucketloads wherever he's played, so i'm sure he will do fine here. Defences in England aren't exactly solid these days either!

I will reserve judgement until he’s played ten games or so. Can see him as a starter given his age and at just 6ft, he isn’t going to bully many Centre backs. Fox in the box perhaps. I wish him well.

I'll support him but I don't understand how or why he has ended up here. Let's hope he bangs in the goals when given the chance.

Saying to the podcast chaps, one thing that isn't being talked about enough is how he significantly increases the good - lookingness of our team... This was a pretty crucial thing after the hit we took last year losing Ander and signing Maguire.

@R.N7 ... You were behind the good looking 11s right? How do we measure up these days?

Now that the nonsense has died down, I'm very excited to see him on the field. Has been a real class act and I think he could have a huge impact.

Reading about him he sounds like a top guy and a real pro, could be a great signing this if he’s fit enough

Telles though. Pure Brasilian babes following us now.

Always admired and been a big fan of this guy since his Napoli days, it's crap that we don't get to experience him in a United shirt in his peak but regardless it's one of those enjoy them while you can moments, he won't carry us to 21 but he will score goals in a United shirt, how can you not look forward to that ?

@JPRouve @kouroux

Where position did he play for PSG when Zlatan was there? Did they play two up top quite often (I recall them playing 4-3-3 in the CL) or was he moved out wide?

Giving Caveman Cavani the #7 shirt is the footballing equivalant of "let them eat cake."

Feck these owners, ed and the board.

He can look like a pub player at times. Inzaghi-esque in that sense.
But his numbers don't lie:
  • 105 goals for Napoli (best goals to games ratio in Napoli history)
  • PSG's all time top goalscorer (200 goals)
  • 49 CL & EL goals from 81 games combined
  • 50 goals from 116 games for Uruguay (scored at 3 World Cups)
  • 403 career goals
