If he had somehow managed to score that first header (I'd call it a chance, but it hardly was) it would have been one of the best headed goals for some time.

Or they all had a meeting and decided Cavani is the best option for the striking department.

Sancho seemed to be target number one and the transfer board (which includes Ole) had a forward as top priority. The plan B to Sancho was another forward.
We’re lucky as feck that such a plan B presented itself but to make out Ole didn’t want him or that a player of that calibre was “forced on him” when he’s the only number 9 in the squad is utter madness.

Can't believe we had a free run at him. He would've been perfect for a side like Barca

Rooney became a better goalscorer and his game become more reserved as he got older. That happens to pretty much every striker. He never developed Cavani's instincts in the box and from a very early age he was a different player in the box than Martial. He didn't become like van Nistelrooy while playing alongside him. He just got better at what he was naturally good at.

He massively improved his movement and finishing. I never said he had instincts like Cavani but they were much better than when he was younger.

Hmmm Lewandowski and Kane (I'm really struggling to think of another other than Lewandowski, maybe Rooney then) ? If not including Messi and Ronaldo.

Suarez I would also guess but I don't think you would include his Ajax goals if it's only top 5.
Eh? Has to be messi and Ronaldo

Rooney did. It's certainly possible, it definitely depends on the player though, their drive, their ability to learn.
Tbf Rooney was a more complete forward than Martial. At similar age, his footballing IQ and application on the pitch far exceeds Martial.

From what I remember he got into exceptional positions from his breakthrough season alongside Suárez and Sturridge, he was just even more profligate then and spent more time trying to set up the more accomplished finishers alongside him.

I remember him being great running in behind but very little of that poaching style finishing. He seemed to develop that knack for being in the right place in the box at City.

Its absolutely ridiculous people here wrote him off before he even touched the ball. Glad to have been one of the few fans that were confident he`d be a good signing and this won`t be the last game he scores important goals for us.

His insta story currently says “Gracias negrito” to one of his friends congratulating him... Imagine the FA will be all over this now.

10/10 performance from him today. Exceptional.
Could've had a hatrick on another day.
Form is temporary, class is permanent.... He showed that today.

Ive been really impressed with CAVANI - not just his MOTM display today with an assist and 2 superbly taken headed goals - but overall his work rate and movement upfront are an inspiration.
Martial really needs to watch and learn.

To be fair, I wrote him off before he came here. I thought the move stunk of desperation and he’d end up being another Sanchez. The guys got class though and is exactly what we’ve needed for a long time.

I thought he’d be a good solid addition to the team. He’s always been all action so I knew he wasn’t here for a retirement swing song and he’d put in the graft.

Honestly if the fitness is there it should be Cavani then whoever supports him. I would like to see he and Martial in some sort of 2 as Martial just has better link up than the others but the desire and his movement is incredible. Assist and 2 goals today. Also the first corner he was on clears the first header away which just felt like a statement at that point in the game. He was fantastic.

He’s looked really good and for his age still looks incredibly fit and fast, could be a Zlatan like signing this.

Its old school but there’s something about having a striker capable of burying bullet headers from crosses:drool:

Must start against PSG

They won't because unlike Luis Suarez he did not say 'I hit you because you are black,' and there's no Dirk Kuyt evidence contradicting his claim that he was using Negrito in a friendly way.

Class act, in spite of his accolades and age he works harder at pressing than any of our other strikers.

He has always had brilliant movement, don't think he has ever been an elite finisher but for ability to get on to things he has had few peers, at his peak he worked the defense and ran channels like a champion. The difference between him and Martial is stark for runs made.

I think we have to be careful not to overplay him, 33, plays a physical demanding style, keep him relatively fresh and he can be huge for us this season, guys like he and Bruno who just keep going win you things.

Jota was a plan B for Liverpool. It happens all the time, it’s just another thing some of our fans jump on to criticise the club and the manager.
Criticising the manager for something he never did. Insane.

fact is we signed him. Everything else is agenda or bollox.

The criticism wasn’t at Ole though, the club and Ed made this signing according to the posters who were so against it. And they “let Ole down”.
Nutters just cause they didn’t get their shiny new Sancho for 100+ million quid.

I desperately wanted Sancho, looks like I was completely wrong and Woody made a brilliant decision under unprecedented fan pressure not to sign him.

yet I still applauded cavani signing as inspired and knew it would work out once he gained fitness. He is a OCD professional like Ronaldo so was just a matter of time when his class would show

I think people forget we approached him earlier but were put off by his wage demands. So did Juventus and Athletico Madrid. When the Morata and Suarez move happened i reckoned his demands dropped and so we signed him.
Watching him play, am baffled why PSG didn't try harder to keep him because i don't think any of thier strikers have done much this season.

Another good and interesting stat.

Edinson Cavani is only the second player to be directly involved in 3+ goals in a Premier League game after coming on as a substitute for Man Utd (2 goals, 1 assist), after current manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored four against Nottingham Forest in February 1999.

He's way better than I thought he was at this stage of his career. And I don't mean just the goal contributions.
