Music Ed Sheeran

I'm not doubting his ability to entertain the masses, I'm doubting his ability to make anything other than average music.

One of the things people seem to always champion about him is his normality. He's just one of us plebs, only with much worse hair, a sinister smile and a guitar. Isn't normal just a synonym for average?

Anyway, I should cork it now, before I go fully music-Nazi. I do get what you're saying though. This generation needed its David Gray, now he's here.

David Gray is exceptional how dare you!

I'm completely with Eckers99 on this.

I'm at an age now where I should be looking at modern music for the youth of today (ie people half my age) and saying "What a racket" or "It's just a load of noise" etc, like my parents were saying to me a generation ago. Instead I'm thinking how limp-wristed and bland it all is and Sheeran is seemingly the poster boy of this musical inertia (I was going to say 'movement', but that's a word that just doesn't apply here).

The guy gets an entire album in the top 20 and is called average. C'mon people, you can not like him but it's pretty obvious he's a talented musician

Since when is the top 20 any sort of reflection of talent? You can be exceptionally average or even terrible in terms of music and still sell a lot.

I doubt the equivalent of Ed Sheeran fans in your day were listening to particularly exciting stuff back then either.

True enough, I suppose. It's just that there seems to be very little in terms of exciting new developments in music that are also popular. Everything is very safe. No new sounds, no new scenes, just maudlin youtubers and 'listen to haw many notes I can cram into a syllable' talent show contestants. And when I look at live listings, it's mainly reformed, crap bands from 20 years ago like Cast and Space alongside this stuff.

Least he's stopped rapping now. Nothing worse than a ginger white man trying to rap.

I don't mind this guy's music, he's had some good songs: A Team, Give Me Love, Thinking Out Loud, Sing and Shape Of You are very listenable.

Prefer him over artists like Nicki Minaj and Ke$ha, who in my opinion are absolute trash.

How come Adele didn't have all these odd "48 songs in the top 50" thing when 25 came out and destroyed all kinds of records, how this chart thing only changed recently?

Doubt I'd recognise any of this guys songs though. But was kinda curious about the above.

I don't think she released it to stream at first, so individual songs probably wouldn't be able to chart like this album has.

Ah, I see. I've not been really all that fussed on chart music since well...I don't know, the NOW album that had the Blue song on it was the last one I had. I'm not overly gonna celebrate when someone does or does not make a number one, but news is news, so was kind of curious. He seems to be well up there with Swifty and Adele in terms of massive sales, though I could recognise their stuff in general, some of is okay, some is faff, it's probably the same here.

He's nothing on the Biebs though, comeback kid of the year 2015! Diplo/Skrillex saved that lad!

Yeah Ed is definitely up there with those big guns, he's also written some big songs for other artists too like that Bieber song so he's gonna be raking it in. Fair play to him.

Mostly I find his stuff underwhelming but a few of his songs I think are genuinely good.

I thought Skrillex and Diplo wrote Where R U Now? ..... or did you mean another song, I give him the comeback award based on that song, and Sorry, which I'm also led to believe King Sonny had a hand in. Legend.

Yeah sorry I meant the song "Love Yourself" off the same album, was pretty huge last year. Along with all those other songs to be fair, not a bad album I didn't think.

Well you can certainly tell the difference from a great songwriter to a generic one from those examples alone. Sonny Moore had elitists actually liking Bieber songs(I'm almost certain Pitchfork had one of those songs in their 20 for that year), the Sheeren one is just kind of generic.

I haven't given this Stormzy album a gander yet, he's getting talked about a lot though, but I wouldn't know what his 'hot' tune is right now either. Seemingly getting decent reviews though.

Inoffensive music for the masses, not dissimilar to Adele. I wouldn't buy it and I don't listen to radio stations that play that sort of stuff but there is far far worse out there.

I used to listen to the guy so I thought I would give his new album a listen. I've listened to the first 3 songs, does anyone else get the feeling that 'Eraser' and 'Dive' are rip offs of some other songs? I can't put my finger on what the songs are but I feel like I have definitely heard these beats before.

I read somewhere he wrote hundreds of potential songs before whittling it down to those in the album.

At first I thought, wow what dedication to the craft, and how amazing to write so much.

Having listened to the album, I think wow what a massive lack of inspiration and artistic flair if those are the best songs he can come up with from all those hours of effort.

I can't see all of the hype for this lad. Some of his songs are ok, but it's just the catchy hook, not the lyrics or their content that make him easy on the ear and good for radio. He appears desperate to portray himself as a man of the people which I find he does all too often. Fair play on his success, and everyone likes their own stuff, but I just don't see him as anything special.

What do we think of shite like Sam Smith, James Bay, George Ezra etc?

If Nicki Minaj and Ke$ha are the alternative options to Ed Sheeran then you must be doing something profoundly wrong.

I don't really seek out music anymore, just hear the popular songs on radio or whatever is playing at work. From all the mainstream songs that come on, Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars are the only ones bearable.

"When your legs don't work like they used to before"
"When I was six years old, I broke my leg"

Something you wanna tell us, Ed?

I'm not going to get into the reasons why. I don't wanna bore people. However, I honestly cannot stand his music. I find it offensive tbh that this is now the standard. I also doubt I'd be interested in going for a pint with him

Just another in a long line of shit music that fills the mainstream. It's always been the case and it's never going to change, so just carry on ignoring it as best you can if you don't like him.

Does he even sing? That castle on the hill song is literally just him speaking in one tone

Well said. But I don't usually like mainstream music.

His music is for middle aged women sitting around the coffee table. Like a male Dido.

Avoid at all costs.

Castle On The Hill is the exact same as Thinking Out Loud.

Same chords, same melody, same phrasing on the melody, same structure, same key, same syncopated notes. Only difference is Castle On The Hill is a slightly different tempo.

Also, if you really want to know the level of his music, I'd advise people to watch this

There is just nothing in his music at all. It's hollow, soulless, heartless, there's no vibe to it, it doesn't make me feel anything, his lyrics are some of the worst I've ever heard, it doesn't remind me of a time/place/feeling.
He obviously gets session musicians into the studio to record with him, that's been confirmed. However, what his problem is with getting them on stage for a live gig is something I cannot get my head around.
Is it greed and he wants the money and attention all to himself? Or, is he not as talented as he's making himself out to be and he can't arrange a full band to play a live set?

Either way, I'm quite sad at the decline in music. It's something that actually does hurt me. To go from The Beatles, and every great band/singer/artist since then, to this is just disappointing

Oh well, no point in complaining. I may get up off my arse and do something about it

That David Brent song is a banger.

Anyway Castle on the Hill and Thinking out Loud sound like completely different songs regardless of how similar they might be.
