Great coup securing Montero and it almost seems like an anomaly that he didn't share an international tournament with Francescoli.
Part and parcel of the shift in power of the 80s. As more players left for Europe, there were attempts to limit the number of "expats" (as the European based players were called) but by Italia 90 most were expats and the ignominy of not making it past R16 -we were better than that, in fairness- elicited a bizarre reaction.

People were done with expats, and for most of the 90s NT managers persisted with the flawed logic that they could only create strong teams with readily available players in Uruguay and Argentina/Brazil at worst.

That's how Enzo misses out on two Copa Americas and only returns (triumphantly) in 95 after moving to River. Montero had moved the opposite way earlier, so they never crossed paths in a tournament.

Of course, the whole no expats experiment was an unmitigated disaster as no half good player remained local long enough so the NT became a revolving door of players plying their trade in a league which no longer managed to get its teams much past the Libertadores group stage.

It cost us two WCQ campaigns

I should have carried on with my Zona Mista idea but didn't know how people would view Cubillas in that formation. So, ultimately went with a more reserved formation!
You should have. It's fun. Well, it may get panned and @antohan will write some great BotD posts, but it's well worth it. Go for it next draft, forget the win and give in to your instincts.

Congrats.

And good luck in the rest of the tournament.

Best way to play going with sides you love making, regardless of the result
