Music, used to buy tonnes on vinyl (2,000-3,000 LPs and 12"s at the last count) but never really caught on to CDs and have only really bought the odd albums that have interested me for the last 5 years+, maybe 10 albums in a good year. Have downloaded thousands of records but already own most of them and if I download something and really like it I will seek out a copy when I'm back in the UK simply because it's harder and more expensive to find the more obscure stuff out here and I'm too lazy to try when I can just rip it from rapidshare. Probably download around 90% of my music now but only around 20% is likely to remain and go unpurchased or is not already owned on vinyl.
TV series, would never have dreamt of downloading a TV series until a couple of years back but the serious decline in the programme selection on the basic cable channels here and the irritating switch to pay per view for the newest series with a year or more wait if you want to watch it on normal TV have seen me download Lost, Dexter, Ashes to Ashes, The IT Crowd, Red Riding and a few other bits and pieces that are unlikely to air here anytime soon. We have bought every series of Lost and are likely to pick up Dexter, Ashes to Ashes and the IT Crowd box sets as well when they are done. It would still be under 5% of all the TV series box sets we've bought to make up for the shite TV out here though.
Our DVD collection is growing as daft as my music collection, have only downloaded maybe 30 or so films in the last year or two and none prior to that and most of those are either too obscure to find out here or would have attracted the censors scissors so I'll download it and watch it, then if it's worth it pick up a copy back in the UK. It's still only a fraction of a percent of the DVDs/VCDs we've bought though.
DVD rentals, used to rent loads when we first moved to Hong Kong, maybe 200 to 300 rentals per year but that dropped as our collection grew and we haven't even bothered registering with a rental company here in Singapore. Why bother shelling out $5+ to rent something when you can pick it up in a bargain bin for little more within weeks.
Cinema visits, virtually never went 5+ years ago but have started going more regularly in the last 2 or 3 years for any decent releases. Probably go 10-15 times a year while my wife would probably double that with cinema trips with mates and our daughter.
Software, maybe 20% illegal downloads but that's mostly older games like Resident Evil or Max Payne for a quick lark on my laptop when I'm away on business. 99% of what's on the home PCs is legit and my Wii's unchipped and not homebrewed.
To be honest I'd say I mostly use illegal downloads as a try before I buy service or as a stop gap when I'm either too lazy to go out for it or it's not yet available here or out of production. The only industry I'd say it has harmed from my point of view is the rental sector but Blockbuster got enough of my money when stocking up our film collection and replacing our old videos in their many closing down sales
