dos Santos to Spurs - looks like it

For some games, yes. It depends on the nature of the opposition and the type of game best suited.

Effective DM, but dirty as hell - personally I wouldn't want that type of player at Spurs. I'd prefer a true footballing DM.

Fair enough, Darrent Bent up top on his own could be a revelation next season after being called a flop, next thing you know he's England's answer to Samuel Eto'o:rolleyes:

Any other dm's that you know of that Spurs have a chance of getting?

5 asterisks. The 5 - 1 thrashing perchance?

I don't blame you for keeping mum ... a dignified silence is the best policy ;)
I tend not to dwell on our reserve games for too long. And anyway it's not Sp**s I'm being quiet about on here but the overrated Argie gimp *****.

 You're pathetic Peter.

Fergie when asked who his player of the season was so far (4/1/2008):
“We’re delighted with Tevez, so I think I’d have to plump for him.

“He’s been excellent and he’s scored a lot of goals.
Rooney on Tevez:
"It is crucial to get him signed and I am sure that will happen," Rooney told the Manchester Evening News.

"Carlos loves playing football here, he's enjoying it, so I don't see why it will be a problem.

"I had no doubts that we could play together and from training with him when he first came you could immediately see the qualities he had. I couldn't wait to play with him.

"Towards the end of the season we didn't play together a lot, but when we did, we did really well.

"He's been brilliant. He's a battler, he works so hard and has scored 19 goals, which is brilliant."

Ronaldo on Tevez:

“He is fast, aggressive, passes the ball well, he makes things happen and scores goals.

“I call him a complete player. It’s incredible the speed with which he has adapted to our team and his progress on the field can be seen by everybody.

“He is a key player for this Manchester United team and we hope he carries on in the same way.”

Maradona on Tevez:
"(He is the) Argentine prophet for the 21st Century"

Your bias against United is really making you look foolish.

Peter Storey on *****

Ludicrously overhyped player, Robbie Keane would have done better for Man Utd last season (actually scored more goals for a midtable side). Touted as a world-class player he's actually painfully slow, lacks vision, is a piss-poor finisher and possibly worst of all forces Rooney to play out of position. The only thing he does do well is run around like Paul Dickov which has led to the rather odd claim that he'll "be much better next season when he's fit".

:lol::lol:

The more you talk, the bigger fool you look.

I take it Fergie, Rooney, Ronaldo, and Maradona are all lying then? Or do you just know better than all of them, as well as the coaches that have given Tevez 32 Argentinian caps, the managers of clubs such as Inter, Real, and Liverpool, who all wanted to sign Tevez, and your former favorite player, Thierry Henry, who has said he would have loved Tevez to have joined Arsenal?

PeterStory > Fergie, Rooney, Ronaldo, Maradona, Mancicni, Benitez, Schuster, Henry...

Your own manager wanted to sign him

I'm not sure Keane would do too well up front on his own, he did seem to suffer while playing there for Ireland. Other than that it looks like a great team.
That's true. But it depends IMO on the midfield. At Sevilla, for example, Saviola whilst on loan at times played on his own up top. Yet the midfield Ramos formed behind him was so creative and supportive, he was never ver really alone in his duties. So they made life easier for him. That's why I believe with Keane's movement and the support of people like Dos Santos, Modric and Lennon/Malbranque, Keane should be okay. If Ramos chose that way of play.

That's a good point, if Ramos decided they would play free flowing football along the deck most of the time then that team could work.

Who fecking cares if they can track back? Especially if If they can keep the opponents fully occupied in the opposite half? Seriously....

Did an in ability to track back make a Zidane, for example, any less of an excellent player?

Well a team like Spurs who leaks goal every minute will care if he tracks back, its not like his in a team who has an solid defensive unit that would not lose goal every second.

Zidane never did need to track back he always had an reliable player cleaning up his mess, I doubt Dos Santos will have someone as reliable as Makelele behind him.

It does enhances your ability as a player, take look at our Ronaldo his doing to shabby tracking back :)

... Any other dm's that you know of that Spurs have a chance of getting?
It's all been very quiet so far in terms of rumours, media stories and ITK stuff re. DMs - which is a bit worrying.

I don't know if it's just my imagination, but whilst there seem to be a fair few good attacking CMs in this world, quality DMs seem to be in much shorter supply.

Still, Modric was signed out of the blue, so maybe Ramos has another rabbit - a DM this time - ready to pull of the hat.

Velso would be ideal, tho' probably beyond our reach. Poulsen I don't want. Diarra would seem set to stay at Pompey following their FA Cup win. So who else is on is the list of quality DMs that might be gettable by Spurs?

Jean Makoun, Hamsik are all I can think of Glaston. If you had Carrick in that team, the football would be unbelievable. You are still a selling club though.

Modric would be the player Id be wanking myself over if I was you though, I have never seen someone with better technique/passing - bar Scholes.

Wouldnt get too excited over Geo Dos Santos, he isnt going to set the world alight imo, but what do I know.

Veloso could be a good shout. You really could have done with Diarra, especially with the amount Portsmouth only paid. Seems like a great player with a lot of potential.

My optimism level goes up another notch:

Giovani Dos Santos is on the verge of completing a move from Barcelona to Tottenham Hotspur after a basic agreement was reached between all three parties.

The 19-year-old Mexico international could join the Premier League side as early as Monday according to Sport after Barca accepted an 8million euros (£6.2million) bid.

That fee may rise to 11million euros (£8.6million) depending on both Dos Santos and Tottenham meeting specified targets during his four-year stay at White Hart Lane.

Dos Santos's father, Zizinho, admitted that his son is proud and excited by the thought of moving to such a prestigious club as he told Mexican daily paper, Record, that a deal was in the offing.

"Nothing has been finalised," he said. "But it is an honour that a club as important as Tottenham want to sign Giovani, but nothing can be said officially yet.

"The ambitious project that Tottenham have has excited Giovani and he just wants to go there and help the team in any way he can.

"It is obvious that leaving Barcelona is a risky decision, but with his qualities it appears that it could be the best option for him."

Spurs boss Juande Ramos was keen to land the starlet because he strongly believes that his pace, ability to break into the area and shooting ability make him perfect for the English game.

Although a deal has not been finalised, Dos Santos' agent, Pini Zahavi, and Barca's sporting vice-president, Marc Ingla, believe that there will be few problems in reaching an agreement.

Throughout the negotiations, Dos Santos - who is also wanted by Manchester City - has been undergoing treatment to recover from a an operation that he had on his ankle in the middle of May and is set to keep him out of action for another four weeks.

If that's true, it's a steal. £6.2M for someone with that kind of potential..

Indeed...we'd probably had forked double that if we went for him.

Ah well, he's talented but incredibly raw, not the best of up and coming youngsters around by all means.

All they need is some one decent. With the defence they will have next season it will hardly be a problem.

Looks like the fat lady has just cleared her throat! ;)

For a player with so much potential, why are Barca selling him so cheaply? Why are they selling him at all?

They're selling him because he wants regular first team action (which Barca can't promise him right now) and he's unwilling to go out on loan.

What the price will be is not clear at the moment - and I wouldn't exclude the possibility of a clause giving Barca first option to buy-back at a fixed price in the future, or something similar.

It's also possible (?) that the deal may involve other players besides dos Santos. I wouldn't exlude the possibility, for example, that Berbatov could go the other way (not as cashless straight swap obviously) or that another Barca player might also come to Spurs.

I'm wondering why no other (for want of a better word) 'bigger' clubs are in for him.

And I doubt Tottenham can offer him many first team opportunities. Probably see him feature in the Mickey Cup.

Glaston, what's this I heard/read about Taraabt being one of the several players on the outer - that Ramos wants to be rid of?

I doubt if the stories are true, but do think it's likely he'll go out on loan for a while - W.Brom is a definite runner - to build up his experience and increase his playing opportunities.

Glaston

I've been hearing Lennon is on is way out now aswell

You've offered him as a px for Bentley but also put him up for sale for just cash

Any truth in that

I'm thinking it's all unsubstantiated media bollox. They've got to write about something before the offseason really kicks off.

No real idea tbh - there's so much stuff swirling around at the moment that's it's hard to tell fact from fiction. A few weeks ago Ramos was praising Lennon, so on the surface of things it would seem unlikely he'd want to sell.

But if Spurs sign even half the players we're linked with then you'd have to think that one or two highly sellable assets besides Berbatov will have to go in order to pay for them and/or make way in the first XI.

So is it a done deal yet?

Selling Lennon would be a bad idea you need to keep your good players and if he isn't good he's certainly got the potential. Plus he runs kinda' funny, a bit like a Duck, even though ducks don't run but still.

You've been had if you're seriously paying 11 million for Dos Santos. He looked good a youth level but doesn't seem to have intelligence for the top level, he's also very arrogant and his agent is never far away. He's leaving Barcelona because he thinks he's too good to sit on bench there and spent the whole season coming out to the press about how he was too good to not be a regular starter despite putting in poor performances on pitch. He doesn't like playing winger either so unless you've got him starting every week at playmaker he won't be happy and you have to remember he's Mexican superstar Giovanni, he's bigger than Barcelona and therefore much bigger than Spurs.

If you've bought him and then let Barca buy Capel, you've probably got the worst of a deal since like forever.

It's all done. Google translation:

In an interview broadcast on Television Azteca rest of the match tonight in San Diego, between Mexico and Argentina, the Mexican striker Giovani dos Santos announced that it will play next season with Tottenham of the English league.

Although it had several offers, the team's English was attractive, plus who knows the technical eleven London Juande Ramos, according to the player said in an interview taped in advance.

I don't know how he will fair in the Premiership(particularly in his 1st season)..But Ramos seems like the ideal coach to get the best out of him.

I know we seem to say this every year now, but a few more decent signings, no injuries to key players, and Spurs will be pushing for top 4. Its unlikely, but ive been impressed by Ramos, and whatever, there is going to be some battle for 5th spot next year!

Wait 'til it's up on the tiny tots site first. According to obscure sites we signed Nasri weeks ago.

Would it be announced in as soon as it's done? OR would it be announced when the window opens?

The Spuds sure have an impressive unit, I quite like some of their players - much to my annoyance.

I'm extremely keen to follow the progress of Modric.

As for Dos Santos, well my initial thoughts are he's far far too small to really excel, for now at the least.

They would be announced when they are done
Yup. And today is my bet - conveniently before the 5pm deadline for season ticket renewals is passed.

It's just been announced on the Barca website:

Giovani Dos Santos is leaving FC Barcelona after six seasons in the club’s youth set-up and first team. The Mexican is set to try his luck in the English Premier League.

After just one season in Barça’s first team, Giovani is to join Premiership club Tottenham Hotspur and its Spanish manager Juande Ramos. The Mexican is determined to show that he can play in one of the world’s most competitive leagues

http://www.fcbarcelona.cat/web/english/noticies/futbol/temporada07-08/06/n080602104464.html

And:

FC Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur FC have come to an agreement for the transfer of Giovani Dos Santos to the English club.

The Mexican will sign for the club managed by Juande Ramos until June 30, 2013 for a fee 6 million euros plus another 5 million depending on the player’s appearances for the London club during his five year’s of contract.

FC Barcelona also maintain 20% of the financial rights to any possible transfer of the player during his first two years of contract and 10% on any transfer from his new club, Tottenham Hotspur FC.

So it's official then Glaston

I'm not sure of this one i've never seen him play so can't really comment on him.

I take it he has been bought to come on from the bench rather than being a regular starter? Of course that may change though if he does well.

Whats your opinion, will anyone be leaving to make room for him?

My bet is he'll become a regular starter fairly quickly - maybe even right from the off, but perhaps after being eased in more slowly.

It's difficult to predict where he'll be played, since he can play in RM, LM or as a 2nd striker. If I had to guess, and without knowing who else will be signed and who will be sold, then I'd say he'll eventually play in LM ahead of Malbranque - if only because dos Santos is left-footed and Malbranque isn't.

I don't know who, if anyone, will be sold to make way for him. Hopefully Ramos wants to maintain squad depth even if one or two players slip down the pecking order.
