He was the one creating our attacking space in the first half by constantly doing the correct runs. His off the ball work in the first half was pretty fantastic.
Yeah, I don't think that's enough for a United player. Not anymore at least. Otherwise, Lingard would have been still here.

I don't think he is good enough to be a starter for us. But today he was vital for us in breaking up their defensive wall in the first half.

I get that, but walking them around and getting them to sit on the bench seems a bit....backwards and could cause more damage depending on what the injury is? I guess it can't otherwise they wouldn't do it - just always found it weird.

Maybe, but if the player can walk it's a good sign.

As for sitting on the bench, rest, ice, compression, elevation is a good first step and remaining with your team mates watching the match can also help with the mental aspect of injury.

Agreed
“His best work is off the ball” is not a very good selling point for an attacking/playmaking midfielder

Creating space and passing options is a core part of Ten Hags system.
I agree it's not enough but today he was vital for us. Our players where stagnant. Given our Centerback pairing we lacked so much of our usual movement and passing options .
Donnie was all over the pitch creating options and creating space for our other players to move in.
With our normal first 11 we have that all over the pitch and then he isn't useful because on the ball he is lacking.

I hope he recovers well. Such a nasty looking injury.

On his performance, he’s just not athletic enough or physical.

He's always thrived off of movement and connecting with players within close proximity. He just doesn't have the time nor acute space in the PL. Thought he was fine until the injury and United were more compact, even if they weren't as dynamic in the final third. Maybe it would have changed when the game was getting a bit more stretched.

Really sad that he got injured and it doesn't look good right now. United need as many players as possible to get through the condensed fixture list.

Also his defensive work, his pressing was very aggressive. Especially when he slide tackled two players to the ground.

You don't like to see players getting injured like that, but I just can't stand watching him play football. He was a bit quicker today, but he continually plays as if he's allergic to the ball, his only thought whenever he receives it is to immediately get rid of it - usually to the opponents. Even when tackling he mostly goes nowhere near the ball.

Utd should have been selling him in January, but with his injury it seems it'll likely have to wait until the summer.
It's such a weird tendency for a player to have when they've come through the Ajax academy as well. You would think he'd have it drilled into him from an early age how to use the ball when he receives it.

Anyway, hope the injury isn't a serious one. That still photo didn't look too great.

He wasn't invisible in the time he played, which is something to point out in case of DVB. Sad he's injured. Probably better to give some youngster a chance in his place going forward. He's not going to make it here. Universe is conspiring against him.

Has club said any word yet?
That could be an ACL from the look of it. Poor lad...

Don't think so. Latest is this:

"When asked by MUTV's Stewart Gardner about any news on Donny, he (Ten Hag) replied: "No, that is too quick. We have to wait and then you can make the right diagnosis, so the medical team have to do their work. But it doesn't look great.

"What has happened to Donny is bad, in the first place, for Donny but also bad news for Manchester United, if it is a bad injury.""

Gutted this happened to him in what was his first ever chance at the club.

His leg went the opposite direction. Hes out for about 3 months i'd say and I'd even go so far as to say we might not see him play again for United.

Wish him a speedy recovery but now means we need to get in another midfielder?
Donny getting injured has as much bearing on our goalkeeping situation as it does on our midfield. From his first 2 games onwards it has been obvious his only good quality is his off-the-ball movement into scoring opportunities. So he is a false nine or a number 10 (without any ability on the ball). Anyone still thinking he is a number 8 is simply wrong. Probably the most bizarre signing of all, which is quite something given all the mistakes we have made. Maybe it makes recalling Amad more likely, don't think it has any other relevance to our transfer dealings.

I thought he looked quite good yesterday, making good runs, getting stuck into the tackle, seemed like something had clicked in him, hope to see him back soon.

I wish him a speedy recovery, but he seems to have a lot of bad luck with United. It be like that sometimes. He's still young, was one of the top talents in the world, I hope he will find a good team that plays him every week. He deserves it. If after 3 managers, among other changes at the club he still can't find his form it's better to hope for a better fortune somewhere else.

Hope he's OK but it was yet another tidy but passive performance. He tried his best to get stuck in but still you could forget he was playing for minutes on end. You get the feeling it's just not meant to be at this club.

Mate we won 3-0 against Bournemouth at home
VDB was not vital in this win at all
yes they are key attributes but you also need to be good on the ball, he is not

When he has played he's stuck to the same style from previous seasons so it's clearly something Ten Hag wants from him.

Excellence on the ball has always been the core trait required at United, however you'd expect a growing focus on managing and creating space off the ball.

VdB has his uses but it would obviously be better to train off the ball movement into players who are also decent with the ball.

He was quite vital in us actually getting any chances in the first half.

Like I said he did well with his movement yesterday and thus was good for us, BUT his on the ball play is poor and he isnt good enough or needed when we have our best 11 ready.
If we get a central midfielder like De Jong and are able to use Eriksen as a sub for both him and Bruno, Donnie would be even further from playing time.

I've thought that about a few injuries. You've got an asset worth 10's of millions and you allow them to walk off hoping for the best. Then when they're off you give them a coat and an ice bag then move them to the bench. I would have thought getting the medical staff start work immediately on diagnosing would be a better option.
Not just the asset, but also the person, the guy was devastated and hurt. He should have been on a stretcher.

Was weird seeing one of the medical staff laughing while they are walking him off the pitch.
I saw that also, felt infuriating while Donny was in clear pain and in tears.

He’s the only true CAM we had as an understudy to Bruno. We can push Eriksen up there, or play Fred higher, but I think both options have their drawbacks. He obviously hadn’t played much at all, but this has resulted in Bruno being overplayed, and him discovering some form would’ve given us the ability to rotate more in that position. Which we needed.

I really, REALLY don’t want to disrupt what is proving to be one of the most productive loans we’ve had in a long time, but the argument for recalling Amad Diallo is becoming more compelling by the day.

Yeah we may have no choice if Donny is going to be out for a sustained period of time

Sheesh, I didn't see it at the time but that doesn't look good at all. I thought it was more of an impact injury as the idiot defender flew into him.

He really hasn't had any luck while being here at all. From scoring on his debut, it's all gone downhill. Feel so bad for the guy as he always tries his best when on the pitch, can't ever fault his effort.

Hope it's not as bad as feared.

I’d argue it’s more in favour for bringing back a central midfielder, Hannibal makes way more sense than Amad right now.

He completed 7 out of 14 passes last night(going by Whoscored). He was busier and made some decent runs but even more active than normal he was still at the periphery of the game, think only De Gea had completed fewer passes of Utd players by the point he was injured. There is just not enough quality there, even Lingard when he got a bit of space was capable of beating a man, hitting a shot from range. If Donny had a creative pass it might be a different story but he doesn't, it is very much continuity stuff back to the closest player.

DVB has been really average but he's still a versatile player who can offer something when the squad needs rotating.
With the cup and european games coming up, our squad is looking super thin
