Donald Trump - GUILTY!

Yeah, I did that gig once. I presume you experienced the same existential dread around 3 awards in where you started to hate yourself and were wondering why you'd wasted your time on something so utterly pointless.
No, I was really drunk and I made decent effort so I actually enjoyed it a lot.

Contempt of Congress is a federal misdemeanour so surely if you are under oath and lying would be a federal crime then you would have the right to plead the fifth?

That could well be the case.

Is it not the case that you cannot pick and choose when you plead the fifth? If you choose to invoke your privilege to one question, then you have to plead the fifth for the entire line of questioning? A bit like Mark Fuhrman did / had to do in the OJ trial.

In any event it would guarantee conviction if an ex-President did so surely?

Vaguely remember reading a case on this point and I think the conclusion was that a Defendant can't pick and choose when they plead the fifth. Whereas witnesses and other notice parties, for example, can selectively plead. I think.....

Trump and Justice Dept. Lawyer Said to Have Plotted to Oust Acting Attorney General
Trying to find another avenue to push his baseless election claims, Donald Trump considered installing a loyalist, and had the men make their cases to him.

-- Their informal pact ultimately helped persuade Mr. Trump to keep Mr. Rosen in place, calculating that a furor over mass resignations at the top of the Justice Department would eclipse any attention on his baseless accusations of voter fraud. Mr. Trump’s decision came only after Mr. Rosen and Mr. Clark made their competing cases to him in a bizarre White House meeting that two officials compared with an episode of Mr. Trump’s reality show “The Apprentice,” albeit one that could prompt a constitutional crisis.--

It’s horseshit. The only reason McConnell will potentially back impeachment is if he thinks it will benefit himself and the Republicans. If he thinks that then he’ll do it regardless of anything the Dems might or might not do. It would be a mistake to believe he can be bargained with.

Fair. The Dems rarely play hardball anyway, so good to see. Just don't want them to feck this up.

Well, convicting Trump - followed by a vote to bar him from future federal office - definitely benefits the GOP, because it stops Trump from ever trying to run again for the Presidency ... and unless the GOP distances itself from Trumpism then Trumpism will surely destroy the GOP.

As for personal benefit to McConnell, I can't see any other than him making a mark as a key figure who, in the end, destroyed Trump.

I used to go to thedonald.win for some great comedy and delusion but even that has been taken down, need to know where the deplorables are gonna go next.

How old is McConnell now, 78? And he has just started another 6 year term. Surely this could be his last and in any event, he would walk re-election in Kentucky in 2026. I cannot see a drawback to a conviction vote.

Sure it has been renamed the Patriots or something

edit; Maybe that has been taken down too but it was there the other day

Exactly, Mitch is in a horrible bind because he needs Trump gone but also doesn’t want to totally ostracize the base who still love him. Giving him time to arrange his defense seems like a sop to the base to try and show them Trump is being treated ‘fairly’.

From the Democrats standpoint though helping Mitch comes with no benefits. If he doesn’t cooperate and Trump doesn’t get convicted, then the Republicans are fecked for 2024. If they help him then he’ll still just stab them in the back next time anyway. Personally I’d let him swing in the breeze and take his full measure of hate from his base for the conviction.

I think the reality of that would be closer to UKIP’s effect on the Tories. It wouldn’t split the vote, it would see Trump maintain an external grip on the party and GOP candidates would have to gain the blessing of MAGA or face a challenger who splits the vote and guarantees a Democrat victory - even in deep Red districts.

I don't think it would work that way here. If Trump formed an official Third party (think Green/Libertarian) then they would not be able to influence the GOP in the way I think you are describing. They would not run primary challengers against the GOP, they would have their own primary. In the US you can only vote in one primary, so the MAGA crowd would have to chose to vote in the MAGA primary, or the GOP. Some states even require you to register in a party and you can only vote in the primary of that party. The result would be a ballot with both MAGA and GOP candidates, which would quite likely split the votes in all but the most Trumpy districts (like MTG's in GA).

I think it could result in a decent number of Republican politicians going to Trump's party to kiss the ring and avoid getting primaried. That would of course create enough of a schism in the GOP to where they never win control of congress.

On the other hand it could also turn into a reform party like situation, where people temporarily flock to the new party because of its charismatic leader, only to feck off once the leader fades away.

Yet she said and did NOTHING!

This one doesn't deserve a pass. She saw how Fauci was treated and jumped straight in to replace him and never said a fecking word. feck her!

Edit! And feck her stupid scarf collection too.

She also saw how Fauci refused to be used, and then did the opposite. So yeah, I'm with you.

She deserves no passes. From her idiotic religious beliefs clouding her judgement to remaining virtually silent throughout the saga, she deserves no whitewashing (which appears to have already unfortunately started).

Please let it happen. The combination of a large-scale GOP implosion and Trump staying around to provide the comedy is mouthwatering.

Edit: Damn you @Mike Smalling

There's a timeline where you end up really regretting cheering on the organization of a violent far-right crypto-fascist party.

Normally I would agree, but the GOP IS that violent far-right crypto-fascist party right now, or at least on the verge of becoming one. Current party leadership has shown they have no interest in reclaiming the part and moving it to the middle. The only way it is stopped is by it's destruction and the institution of laws to prevent it from ever happening again. This only happens if the party is fractured.

Agreed.

I don't believe for a second that Trump has any interest in forming a political party and taking on the repubs. Unless he can figure out a major grift from it. I think he misses the rallies and selling merch but that's about it. He must really be struggling with the rapid drop into anonymity and irrelevance of the last week.

The GOP are obviously vile, but the party leadership has a vested interest in not actually inciting rebellion, terrorism or race wars. They want their votes. The GOP is far from as radical as it's possible to get. You might get a party which actively desires a violent overthrow of democracy, or violent suppression of the left, immigrants, Muslims, Jews, etc. Maybe not right away, but radicalization is one hell of a drug.

For gods sake, we had s literal insurrection 3 weeks ago.The party leadership thought they could lie their way to power, but they lost control. Two of the top contenders for 2024 were complicit in the build up to that and neither has or will back down. They can’t if they want the MAGAites to be theirs. Apparently dozens of house reps were so scared of their constituents that they voted to overthrow an elect. There are real problems in this country. Millions of our citizens are racist, bigoted feckers, and they will follow the party the let’s them revel in that hate. The only way this is “fixed” is by the systematic dismantling of a system that gives this minority outsized power. This means we need DC andPR statehood. We need the abolition of the electoral college. We need a voting amendment that guarantees the voting right of all people. We need an end to gerrymandering. Etc. none of this happens while the GOP has to appeal to its white supremacy base to win primaries. The GOP must be destroyed. The “moderates” have lost control of the party.
