Do you like United as much as you used to?

In a way, there is a sense of loss after SAF leaving. The club we (for those of us between 0-30) knew is gone, and the most of the players we associated with him are also gone. Any person and fan with even the slightest bit of nostalgia and sentimentality will know this feeling, and at times I (and I expect many others) will inevitably feel as if the club we started out supporting no longer exists.

It is only temporary though. If I think rationally about it, I'm able to be excited about the rebuilding of the club. Without SAF we are heading into uncharted territory, and there is a certain joy and excitement in not knowing what lies ahead. I expect the next league title will taste sweeter than any before, because it is no longer a given that we win it.

What I've come to realize though, is that I don't blame people for supporting United less after SAF's departure. I won't call those people glory hunters who just like a club who wins (although some will always be), because for many it's not about winning, but about an emotional connection to the club which was broken when the man who embodied it all is gone. Some can deal with it and reconnect with the club, while some can't, and I can certainly understand both.

Yes. I might not be from Manchester but United were the team that made me love football in the first place. It doesn't matter if they're winning or losing because they're still my club.

Loyalty, son!

I find myself enjoying watching united more and more tbh, its more unpredictable and the lows are pretty bad but the highs will be great when we get back there.

Ok, this will be a personal post but hey...most of you don't know me so here it goes.

First, you need to know that i have MSc in psychology and huge part of interest is leadership, personality of leader. As I was educated in this particular way i look at the word with certain filter...thus i believe football teams represent manager's personalities to a certain extend.

So, massive part of my attraction to United was Sir Alex. I absolutely adore this man. When i read United-related stuff i see that he used to apply proper psychological science in his management. Was it done consciously or unconsciously -doesn't matter. The guy knew how to manage his people. To sum it up- Fergie has been a tantalizing and fascinating case study for me and I'd love to meet him to talk to him about both football and management.

I said before that team represent managers' personalities. Fergie's trait would be never die attitude, throwing a kitchen sink, fighting until the end.
Sometimes you get this question asked- what was the life-changing experience in your life. I always come with one answers - ".....and Solskjaer has won it" .
Honestly, I remember my thoughts before the goal, i remember how shocked i was when i score. I can honestly say this goal has changed my personality- from "this is enough" to "i want to win", " I want more".

The other thing is that we used have player whom i really admired. Keane has always been what i want to be. harder than nails, beating heart of any team.

I used to love United with Fergie and Keane. United were more than a football I followed. It was a sort of philosophy - for many reasons.

With Fergie gone i feel emotionally detached from United. Or to put it in a different way. I still feel loyal, i still watch games, I still consider United my team but definitively the passion is gone. It's not about performances as we had dire spells under Fergie too.

It's a hallow love now. It used to be passion.

100%, feel like this season especially some of the hatred towards other clubs is back, now potentially our players / squad is not better. Such as arguing with people around who has stronger squad us or Arsenal. Few years back it wasn't a contest.

Interesting to see the rebuild too. As a fan you cant just get less interested, for me that isnt possible.

One point potentially, I do have more questions that I used to, under Fergie even when we played badly or missed a key signing (Benzema for instance) it was bad but I still had faith. Under LVG with philosophies and as we've seen pretty boring matches it does lead to the question on are we as confident in the teams ability. BUT its interesting to watch and I have the most faith in the team currently than I've had since the Fergie era (potentially not than the last day of the window last yr, having secured Falcao and Di Maria - I did think these would both work).

They don't play the same though do they?
No they don't but there was a lot of average football in the Fergie years

Exactly it

i've never questioned my feelings for this club, seeing them at their best gives me as much pleasure as ever and seeing them at their worst brings just as much frustration - thats the life of a football fan.
i do feel somewhat disillusioned with the game overall at times (the accepted forms of cheating, widening divide between clubs/players and fans, obscene finances etc) but i could put that down to just getting older, everyone thinks it was better in 'their day' don't they

+ 1

Exactly how I feel as well.

In fact Erica. How old are you? How many matches? Manchester are Manchester whatever.

We're you from?
I'm from the North East and old enough to have seen Georgie Best play - in fact he was the reason I started supporting United. My dad ( a Newcastle fan ) took me to St James' Park in the 60s hoping I would start loving United the way he did . I did , but wrong United ☺

Yes, in fact I'm much more invested in the club now than in the 90s or early 2000s. The increased competition and the rebuilding that's required make it even more exciting. The only blip was Moyes's reign - I hated it then, even though I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

For me, United was a class apart from different clubs in the way we used to conduct ourselves off the field. Fergie would make sure that the club is well represented. Post Fergie, we are just one of the also rans. Just another big club trying to make a profit. I love supporting United, but it feels different now and not as fun as it used to be. Maybe due to the football United play now, not sure.

Plus after the Giggs crap that came out 4 years ago really ruined me. Giggs for me was just a step below Fergie and him behaving that way just broke my heart. My fault that i thought Giggs would never go that way and for thinking footballers are gods but that's how it is and i learnt my lesson.

i never used to move from the TV set when anything related to United was on. But now if my wife feels like going out for dinner, or friends call me out, i make sure i go and spend time with them even if that means missing the match because family & friends are above United for me.

Exactly it

Did I say I'm sporting

Tbf is have run off too.you're dad isn't one of those bare chested one's right?

What I loved about United when I was young was that there was the irish representation in the team. Irwin and Keane throughout the 90s and O'Shea in the 00s; it validated my reasons for supporting United from across the water.

I still love United the club but there is that one connection that has been severed.

Barcelona game always been the Spanish equivalent of Manchester United.
They won't put up with tumescent football.
They have also had some of the best players ever to have put I boots.
Oh I agree some legends of the game have played there, doesn't make tiki taka any less shit to watch as a neutral though. I will say this season has been a big improvement though.

I know it wasnt specifically the Denis Law back heel but going down that day was one of the worst I've had .

I think it's pretty amazing that some fans(like yourself) have witnessed the club get relegated and get to the top of the world in one lifetime.

Not to mention the times when the passion was unparalleled.

I understand that a lot of people had attachment to SAF, and now he's gone it's almost a mourning period.

But he's only one man. Your love for the club shouldn't depend on one person even if they are the greatest manager ever.

He was bound to retire at some point, now we move on. Fergie himself even said so in his speech at OT.

I will always love the club and watching games is still an addiction.

However the way the people who run it (not just the owners) treat the support has got me down enormously.

Especially;

- the relationship between the club and the local community. It's been poor for too long now and for me it makes us less special than other clubs unfortunately.

-The match going support is taken for granted.

How good you are at running a club should not be gauged by how much you are prepared to spend on wages/transfer fees.

With the money the club makes it should be doing so much more in other areas.

I think someone above said emotionally detached. That's the exact word i was looking for.

What big club actually ticks all those boxes? i think this is present in almost every large organisation where the local community is alienated amongst other things.

I'm losing intrest more and more because of the way we play football and also probably with age. I used to watch because we used to play exciting entertaining football. But from past few years watching United has become a chore.

Hopefully this changes, the game on Tuesday I found one of the most entertaining I have seen us in years

But that's the point of supporting a club, your feeling towards the club should never change.
