I think the team is doing very well, even though so many players are injured,so when the first team players come back, there will be a selection dilemma for SAF, so do we really need anyone.
I personally think we need a defender who can play in the centre and left someone like Escude.
And someone who can play up front and midfield, someone like Quaresmo.......so we can have some more competition and more depth in the squad....

Yes, 1 Striker, 1 Fullback.

We definately do not need another midfield player.

Just because we beat the dippers and Burnley doesn't suddenly mean we don't have to buy someone. We're very thin at striker, and LB. An injury to Ruud or Mickey and we're effectively fecked.

Looking at our squad i think were desperately short of wide players, genuine wingers.
Id like someone who could play out wide and up front, ie Duff

Not unless one moves on - then I'd be up for a winger.

The wings are a concern as Giggs hasn't been sufficiently challenged, and unless Richardson is allowed to play more and develops quickly, then a replacement for Blomqvist needs to be found - maybe Duff for example. If Chadwick is not seen as sufficient challenge for Beckham, then either we need to consider Ole as the backup (though we've also used Scholes and Veron there, rather ineffectively) or find someone else, maybe Davis from the reserves, or Quaresma, Joaquin etc.

We're almost certain to get a 4th striker sometime, though it may well be the in the summer. If we do get an injury to a striker or two, I'd like to see Nardiello and Webber given the chance - and both should get more sub and cup appearances to prepare them if they're needed later. Not much need to comment on who the new striker should be, we've already got a poll on that.

Alex has also said he'll still try to sign Escude - probably in the Summer.

I'd still sell Veron, and if that was the case then either someone from the youth needs promoting (and must do well when he does) or we need a replacement. Not sure who I'd pick, but many names have been suggested, like Van Der Vaart.

A striker. Ole is 30 in a couple of months. He seems to have a couple more years in him, but strikers normally leave United at around 30/31.

Midfield. Giggs is 30 soon as well. Keane is 32, and both players will be coming to the end of their careers a couple of years.

Defence. Either a RB or LB.

Should maybe go for Viduka then..... ;)

if we want an attacking player who can play midfield and striker i think its between ronaldinho and quaresema. if its only a striker i would of thought shev but it seems hes enjoying life at milan anyway so i dunno. cisse renewed his contract at auxerre so that one is doubtfull aswell

I still think we could get Matt Jansen's career up and going again.

i agree with the calls for a defender and striker, although i wouldn't be surprised if we don't get anyone.

Hey, leave the V-bomber alone. ;)

I don't think a fullback is as important now as it was just a few months ago. With O'Shea being able to play anywhere in the backline (not to mention as a defensive mid) that solves a lot of problems.

We need another striker, it's as simple as that. Preferably Ronaldinho.

We definitely need at least one more striker. See the team which is "doing very well" recently, you can find we have already used all three forwards we currently have. If we have one or two players injured in front line we will be in big trouble.

Sheva in for Seba. Sorted

I can't think of anything better.

In fact really I can't. I'd then ask Ole to play in the striker and right winger role, aternating with the others and bring Richardson into the first team to properly alternate with Giggs. A full back would be a good idea too.

I'm not one of the many Veron haters, I think he's a class act. I just dont think he fits in with our style of play. Our midfield success is built around a fast moving, quick interpassing, tracking back unit (which wud b hard to say pissed).

Sheva in, Seba out would solve a) striker problems, b) midfield issues, c) 4-5-1 and d) a lot of defensive problems, because we get more cover from anyone else, and d) cash issues

:D

I'm not a Seba hater, he's just way way overrated though and always has been. Expectation was too high, transfer fee was too high, idea to buy him was flawed. He's not a bad player, fairly average, could look good in another side, but still wouldn't perform any better than most top flight pro midfielders.

I'd agree with Dans, he's completely overrated and for the price we paid for him a lot more would have been expected. One good pass every now and again and a couple of goals against much lesser opposition does not justify all the hype IMO.

I think Seba's definitely a quality player, but I just don't think he suits the English game. And he definitely doesn't suit the way Man Utd plays. And that there is the problem, when he plays he doesn't try to fit into our style, instead the rest of the team tries to work around his style.

I'll correct myslef here actually - the idea to buy him wasn't flawed, being that it was Ferguson's idea to add the extra midfielder and sacrifice an attacker to succeed in Europe, although I think Veron wasn't the right player given the squad we already have.

Maddogg - I don't even think it's a question of the team working around and trying to adapt to Veron, I think it's just that he comes in and doesn't quite give us enough - like Scholes and Keane would for example. He is the wrong player for the 4-5-1 and he is also overrated in whatever system he plays.

Fourth striker required
Quality cover for Giggs
I doubt we can expect to buy any more than two players.
From how he has played the holding role I reckon Fortune could do a good job as cover for Silvestre not forgetting O'shea.
With Keane,Beckham and Butt to come back our midfield is strong.

As it stands at the minute then:

GK - Barthez; Carroll; Ricardo;

FB - O'Shea; Neville G; Neville P; Silvestre

CB - Rio; O'Shea; Neville G; Blanc; Brown; Silvestre; May

CM - Veron; Beckham; Butt; Keane; Neville P; O'Shea; Scholes; Stewart; Fortune

R/LM - Giggs; Beckham; Ole; Chadwick; Richardson;

CF - Ruud; Ole; Diego

Plus we could also use Keane in defence in any crisis (can't see that now tho), and Forlan on either of the wings.

I expct there are other permutations, especially as I haven't used most of the young players.

Not quite, I want a flexible fullback that can play on the right and the left. ;)

Just curious - why do people generally favour getting a left back over a right back ?

Obviously a Denis Irwin right / left reincarnation would be the dream ticket, but as I see it :

Currently

LB : Mickey, O'Shea, Phil

RB : Gary, Phil, O'Shea (Wes ?)

Gary I feel is a better central defender these days than full back, Phil as we know is our new midfield destroyer (and never looks comfortable going forward whatever position he plays in) and O'Shea is adept at either centre or left back, with right only in emergencies.

A strong attacking right back in the Mickey style would be ideal IMHO and bolster our wide options.

I think we need to keep Veron for europe, i have followed him closely since his playing days at Parma, and when he wants he can give us that extra dimension, something that no other midfielder at the club can, but i do admit he needs to buck his ideas up in the prem, not just europe. I think we need a few decent defenders, not superstars, players like escude. And we should go for Cisse.

If I'm quick, I migh get all four forums with my name on them! :D
