Do we need a new No. 1 Keeper or a Backup?

I think we can see why Bayindir has not seen much match time. And we also have Onana who is prone to occasional acts of lunacy.

Should we be scouting for a top keeper?

Probably... but it's not priority.

Hopefully they snap up a decent back up in the summer, because we are truly screwed if Onana gets a bad injury

Backup. Keepers are always a bit mental and Onana is good enough for the time being. Bayindir is legit terrible.

Onana is fine for now. I think if we are going for a title we need to replace him based on the brain farts he produces. Bayindir is a problem only because Onana will be going to AFCON.

Bayindir had a mare last night. He caught goalkeeper heebie jeebies. It’s an actual thing; sloppiness can be weirdly contagious - I know this from experience. But I see the point of the OP. Onana needs to try and minimise the flaky element in his (otherwise decent) game.

Surely we have an academy lad who can fill in for Bayindir? Onana is fine for now.

Onana is fine, we do need a backup... if Onana got injured tomorrow for any significant amount of time I'd be bricking it.

In a perfect world both for me, but more pressing is backup.

In the short term, we need a van der Gouw type signing. Older, experienced and steady, whilst also happy to play a bit part.

Shame we couldnt hold on to Jack Butland but probably too good (and young) to be a back up keeper.

There really isnt anything wrong with Tom Heaton. I dont think we would have lost the game last night with him in goal.

Could we potentially buy a young challenger like Trafford or Restes? Makes sense if we aren’t convinced by Onana.

Both but it’s not like Onana gets injured so just play him every game until it becomes a priority. I’d look for a no.2 in the summer who has some no.1 qualities that way if Andre has more howlers we can bring him in and take the pressure off

I can't recall a two GK situation where they challenge each other ever really working out. You want a starting keeper, you buy a starting keeper.

Onana is a good goalkeeper. We need to sign a better back up goalkeeper before next season when AFCON kicks in. I wouldn't be trusting Bayindir with anything more than a dead rubber cup tie.

We need both if we want to be serious challengers, but such is the dire state of the squad this takes a backseat to the more pressing holes to fill in the tean. We'll probably stick with both until the summer when I'd expect Bayindir to be replaced. I'd expect Onana to be given one more season, after which I can see us seriously looking to replace him too if he remains inconsistent.

I'm sure there's a goalkeeper we can get on a free transfer at the end of the season. Yes, maybe not a priority but it's definitely something we need to fix.

Sign a back up and continue to assess Onana for the time being.

Onana was brilliant up until the Forest calamity and then followed it up with the mess in Europe.

Good enough for now.

GK is not a priority now but depending on the situation it wouldn't be bad to look for a new keeper in the near future.
Both of our GK's have serious issues.

Onana is incapable of coming out for a cross, nevermind punching or catching a football, which makes us an easy prey when defending corners, he occasionally misplaces passes or doesn't react well to long distance shots.
Bayandir just hasn't got the confidence, PL experience to be relied upon.

Bayindir made me uncomfortable more than De Gea's debut against City and after that Westbrom... it's that bad.

Onana is one of the best keepers in the league and we clearly currently have much bigger priorities. I would grab someone who is getting on from Seria A or the PL or wherever who was a starter and who can play with their feet and then I would give them a few games throughout the season to stay ready in case we ever really need them. Every keeper we’ve have since big Pete or VDS has either had a total nightmare starting out or at least a few major costly clangers in them, even the best ones. It’s not really fair to ask a fella who while probably not good enough for us but who also has barely played any football at all in two years to just step in and win us matches. We gambled, it didn’t work out, we learn and move on. I doubt we will see much more of this lad, he might even be gone in January. I think there were noises about him not being happy with the total lack of games which is fair enough. I don’t get why younger players take these gigs to be honest.

A lot of people used to want Bayindir to get a chance and wanted him to be played instead of Onana. Onana does have some pretty awful gaffs in him, but he's getting better and generally performs well.

The only times we've played Bayindir, he's been awful. Would rather play Tom Heaton.

So, yes, we do need a decent and reliable No. 2. No idea why we ever let Romero go, he was great.

If we ever have serious designs about being a title winning side then people need to realize that Onana is not good enough to be our number 1, ie; the amount of simple goals he's conceded since he signed is enough proof and the Turks performance last night would suggest that he's not a good enough back up so preferably both need to be upgraded.

Yes. As much as I despise the guy we should have gone for Emi Martinez a few years ago. We need an aggressive keeper. Ours are too passive.

Our goalkeeper options are absolute muck right now. No-one inspires much confidence.

Personally I would buy someone proven and experienced like Jan Oblak to be number one for a few seasons and take time identifying a replacement.

In terms of goalkeeping fundamentals like positioning and claiming crosses, Oblak is someone who would put confidence back in our defending.
