Do we look stronger?

If Silverstre stays, I don't agree that we really need Escude -- we have a lot of other positions which have more urgent need to fill: RB and ST. Besides, I don't really think we should get a backup for Barthez. We should REPLACE him instead. That will benefit us much more in long term.

I am one of those who thinks Barthez is a liablilty overall. Yes he can be brilliant and on his day one of the best shot stoppers but you really don't know what's going to happen next. It's Carroll's big chance and franklly I hope he takes it. We do need back up though if he's injured or doesn't make the grade. The full back positions are Ok but if Brown is out for a while as well as Gary and we don't sign Escude we've got real problems there as well. I have great faith in Rio and O'Shea although I think Blanc is not the answer despite his record and experience. He's too much of a ditherer in certain situations and that it is not meant to be an indictment of what has been a tremendous player by the way. Another problem is upfront where we have only two strikers. Forget Forlan until he can improve his technique. Let him deputise for Beckham on the right where he can use his pace and trickery (hopefully!) without the pressure of having to score goals. Effectively Fergie needs two stikers to bring the tally up to four unless, as I have suggested previously, he uses Scholes, when fit, to play alongside and not behind,Ruud. We also need cover for Giggs. All in all three or four more. It isn't going to happen according to Kenyon so I'm sceptical about our chances of success this season.
