Diogo Costa Porto keeper

Below is a good video of his all-round skillset as a GK, where he displays his ability to distribute both with his feet and with his long throws, as well as his ability to command his area and sweep up behind Porto's last line. He's about 6'3 or 6'4 tall from my personal observation and his next move will potentially cement his place among the very best keepers in the world imo. And the best keepers are those who have a all-round skillset imo.

Why consider replacing probably the best goalkeeper in the world? If you are a goalkeeper you job is to stop balls going into the net. Give Allison Emerson neuer oblak etc they same wouldn't do half the job de gea does.. if we won a little more under de gea he could easily go down as our greatest keeper ever
I presume this is a piss-take? If not, I'm guessing you've just woken up after being in a coma for four and a half years? He hasn't been even remotely near one of the best in the league (let alone the world) since 17/18.

Hell, even at De Gea's best he was comfortably behind Neuer.

1,86 m. Hm Is he any good dealing with crosses?
Only seen him in the CL games and he does look quite assured off his line. But not too many crosses in the games to arrive at a conclusion for me. What clearly stood out were his distribution and sweeping

No debate there, Neuer was and still is a absolutely phenomenal GK.

Edit: in addition to seeing him if anyone wants more of an analysis'

This idea of signing keepers first and foremost because of their first touch will never make sense to me. When people speak about keepers now it’s ‘get him, his passing is amazing’. Pretty sure keepers are meant to keep the ball out of the net even in the ‘modern game’. Many posters were clamouring for Henderson to be our first choice in the summer, despite him being rubbish, because he’s apparently more ‘modern’ than De Gea.

My biggest problem with that is probably that he is not more modern than de Gea. He is not better either.

But I would really love to have a more proactive goalkeeper again. During the Ferguson-era we played with quite aggressive proactive goalkeepers like Schmeichel, Barthez and van der Sar. I think the biggest exception to the rule was de Gea. And I also think that was the worst period of Fergusons era in terms of the football we played. Perhaps a bit concidental, but the style of the goalkeeper matter.

Of course, the quality of the goalkeeper is more important than anything. But I would be willing to sacrifice a few great saves for a goalkeeper more willing to step of the line. I think goalkeepers that do will prevent quite a few situations from arising. If that goalkeeper can pass the ball well to that would be a big bonus.

De Gea is finished.

Best of all time IMO. The closest thing to Schmeichel I've seen, with fantastic sweeping and distribution added in. He's not quite at that level anymore, but he's still bloody good.
Absolutely we missed a trick not getting him.

Some of his punching them videos was hair-raisingly bad. Other than that he looks calm and does the simple thing in possession. Aside from the penalty there weren’t any worldie saves, just good positioning and standing tall, which is what you want in a keeper.

Must have been somewhere else then. 1,92 is pretty good.

Edit: Was transfermarkt.at
Costa is pretty decent at dealing with crosses and commanding his area right now (also, he's quite brave and nothing seems to phase him). But there's definite room for improvement, and he can get better in that department, like most young goalkeepers. That will organically happen when he's more battle-tested, and has to make adjustments and fine-tune his anticipation (every goalkeeping import to the Premier League has to deal with this, and most managers in the league aren't particularly cross-obsessed these days anyway). As for his height, he's clearly no van der Sar or Courtois. Would say that it's neither a major asset nor an absolute liability — pretty middle-of-the-road at roughly 188cms (Wikipedia is a hit-and-miss source as Luke Shaw is wrongly listed at 185cms, Phil Jones is wrongly listed at 180cms and Michael Carrick was wrongly listed at 183cms for yeeeears), so shouldn't be an issue when you consider his explosiveness, positional sense and agility. Other contemporary goalkeepers in that range: Ederson, Ramsdale, Lloris, ter Stegen, Oblak, K. Schmeichel.

Ok so we have established that he’s good with his distribution and playing it out from the back, but how’s his command of the area? And how does he deal with set pieces?
Not afraid to come off his line and directs/controls his defence. Has a few flaws in his game as does any young keeper, could be better in some 1 on 1 situations and isn't prime Dave with regard to reflex saves. The pros outweigh the cons and he's more of a Ten Hag keeper than any of our current lot. His use of the ball is very very good and he'd certainly help the rest of the team.

Whose the top 3 GL that you rate that are available on your eyes adnan?
i'm a bit lost with the more experienced keepers and the good ones tend to be at the big clubs, so aren't available to us.

But for me the keepers I've been keeping a keen eye on for the last year or two are Diogo Costa, Maarten Vandervoordt and our very own Radek Vitek. And apart from Diogo Costa the other two keepers won't be available to us for several years due to their age and moving to RB Leipzig in Vandervoordt's case. But these keepers represent a potential profile where they're showing the ability to develop into well rounded keepers. I think it's extremely important to have a keeper that has the ability to impose himself in his area and also be capable of distributing the ball at a good level. If the aim is to implement a proactive way of playing the game then having a proactive keeper to improve the offence is very important imo.

Costa i'm hoping we sign, but the Belgian keeper Vandervoordt also looks a huge prospect at 20 years old, and is someone that looks to have a very high ceiling. Vitek is still several years behind the aforementioned two players but i'm hoping he'll be loaned out next year which will aid his development further.

There's also the young keeper at Southampton (Bazunu) who looks to be a very interesting prospect.

De Gea revisionism before his career is even finished? Impressive.

What do you think about Mike Maignan at Milan?

Your post seems like it's stuck in time.

What do you think about Mike Maignan at Milan?
I mentioned him on here when he was 22 years old and thought he was someone we should potentially buy due to his proactive nature and ball playing ability. He's turned out exactly as I thought he would and even-though he's very good and fits the bill, I'm not sure we'll be able to sign him due to the high price Milan would demand for him.

I agree about potential transfer price, sadly. And his deal runs until 2026 too.

Point well taken. Modern fans are obsessed with subsidiary attributes of modern keepers, whose primary responsibility is to ensure that balls do not cross their goal line.

I am in my 30s Schmeichel is one of my heroes. To me probably the greatest keeper of all time. I'm just saying if de gea had won more he would have a chance. He has 4 player of the year awards at us. No one else has. Yes his distribution isn't amazing but a goalkeepers first and main job is to stop the ball going into the net and he does it better than most. Had a bad patch a couple seasons ago but so does every player in every position. I remember Schmeichel even having a bad patch during treble season before fergie sent him on a holiday

Hopefully you remember that PS had so much more to his game. Box domination, intimidation of strikers, could pluck crosses out of the air all day long, could throw longer than most kick it, goal scoring threat, supreme courage AND shot stopping

Those long throws into the oppo half, to start counter attacks

He was a proactive and aggressive goalkeeper. Not as refined on the ball as van der Sar, but modern in the sense that he had balls. His approach prevented quite a few situation that we now face more regularly with de Gea. I really miss that.
